His 2003 season might have been his most underrated one that he ever had in his career. Over 1600 rushing yards 100 catches for over 700 receiving yards and he put up those kinda numbers for a team that went 4-12 that year and ended up with the number 1 pick.
I posted a similar comment on how the chargers were trash in tomlinson's first couple of seasons and how they over used him. That 2003 season is a testament to what I was talking about. Those stats might be the single greatest performance for a running back as whole for a single season, and this was years before he broke the single season td record.

This video was also a sneaky highlight video for Lorenzo Neal (#47). Probably the last great full-time FB in the NFL. He was trucking people for LT, and kept right on moving. Teams just don't use a real FB very much anymore, and that's helped slowly kill the RB position. That big first hit is on the RB, not the FB leading the way. I got to watch most of LT's home games in college as well (TCU). He came in right after I graduated. No one could catch him if he got past the line. I saw his 400 yard/6TD game against UTEP. They had nothing to stop him. The crazy thing is, his Freshman season the team went 1-10, and they had him playing Fullback. Coach gets fired, new coach puts him at RB, and the rest is history.
You made a great point about the death of the FB position affecting RBS. It makes so much sense. I’ve been wondering for years why it felt like workhorse backs have even shorter shelf life than they used to. RBs used to pound the rock out of I with a FB paving the way. Now, they often run from spread and have to make a man miss or absorb a blow.
The culture stinks, i think it's why good players sign there then just fall off the map. I've been following them close since 03-04 and the last seasons that really felt like contention were 09-10 because a lot of those guys were on the team since 05-06. Since then, it's just cool for them to be in the league and live in Cali I guess
I saw Tomlinson play at TCU and I was a huge fan of him ever since. Even though I'm a die-hard Chiefs fan, he was always one of my favorite "non-Chiefs" Class act and one of the best, most complete running backs in history.
Dude was so amazing running, I just think most tacklers were like, "nah, stopping him would be destroying art." Truly a one of a kind athlete. Thanks for the rewind.

Can't believe he and Marshall Faulk didn't make the NFL's 100th Anniversary Team. Glaring omissions. These dudes were the best dual threat RBs in NFL history.
Faulk was great, but he only dominated with a loaded team. He barely averaged 4.0 yards a carry until 99 where he all of a sudden shot up to over 5.0 ypc due to the surrounding talent he had. LT dominated no matter who was around him.
Grew up a raiders fan and would jus watch lt run all over the place like a madman. His signature TD celebration till this day is my favorite celebration. I can say I was fan of him even tho chargers were and still are a rivalry. Really disappointing he never got a Lombardi.
The 2001 Chargers probably had the best back-to-back draft picks of all time. Ladanian Tomlinson, then Drew Brees. LT really provided some tremendous hype around the team, growing up in San Diego around this time, it was understood, he was THE man in this city. Safe to say his character matched up with his play as well. (Heck, he won Walter Payton Man of the Year the same year he broke all the touchdown records and led the Chargers to 14-2.) Of course, being a Charger, he has no Superbowls to show for it, but he really doesn't need it. He's just amazing.

He’s the reason why I’m a Chargers fan and not a Rams fan. Since LA had no team for a long time, I became a Chargers fan since they were the closest team to LA, and LT made the Chargers so fun to watch. And even when the Rams moved first, I chose to stay a Chargers fan.
Many times I’ve watched his highlights, I just knew from the start that LT was not only the future of what the Chargers was going to be in the backfield but he was the future of what the league was gonna be like for a RB. If it wasn’t for LaDainian Tomlinson’s versatility, RBs like Matt Forte, Christian McCaffery, Alvin Kamara, Austin Ekeler, Aaron Jones, and even Darren Sproles wouldn’t be here today. LT was that RB
Most of us were too young to watch and appreciate the great Barry Sanders but at least we got to see this man right here. He is the closest thing you’ll ever get to Barry and it’s not even close. Although I must say my personal favorite is Adrian Peterson

There was nothing about him that was more complete than Payton, Smith, or Faulk. Or even Marcus Allen. Allen had more total yards, more rec. yds.; plus, 6 passing TDs of his own. Payton was as complete as any back ever, and more complete than 90-some %; plus I think he had like 9 passing TDs.
