Wow! You can see the energy and joy of their young selves when Micky and Judy were together at the end.

Apart form the extraordinary talent, intelligence and quickness, what comes across is her professionalism: if something goes wrong, she immediately apologises. God only knows how she manages to keep so many elements afloat on this show.

Mickey Rooney REALLY loved Judy all his and her life. In a way he was devoted to her memory and it had to have hurt him so much when she died.

You know I always wondered why they never dated. I guess maybe they were too young when they met and became friends dunno. The only thing I ever saw him say about her is that she was that deep love you could only get from a sister, something that he always longed for being an only child. Never a mention of any other kind of feelings, but from what I gather he was a bit of a playboy when he was young, so he probably cherished her too much to risk hurting what he had with her as a friend maybe. I do know he treasured her and always spoke so highly of her with so much love in his heart, and im sure he was crushed indeed.

Poor Judy, what the hell were the Dillards doing on her show? There were several unsuitable guests on Judy's show, when you think who she could have had!

Judy Garland had a reputation for being hard to work with because of her MGM-induced drug problem. But, notice in these outakes from her show that the screw-ups are usually somebody else's fault.

I had a crush on Judy for years but she was so abused. My sister and I were shocked to see her stagger out drunk on one of her TV shows when we were kids.

    • @elspethcoogan1499

Which one of Judy’s shows where she “staggered out drunk” are you referring to? I don’t believe this happened, so I’m cynical about your comment.

@@elspethcoogan1499 We were kids. I couldn’t tell you what show it was but she was obviously inebriated. As kids do we giggled but were embarrassed for her. And yes, she was staggering out to the stage.

    • @elspethcoogan1499

@@kellycoleman715 Hmm..as Kids you might easily have misinterpreted what you saw. I don’t think any footage exists of Judy “staggering out to the stage”, so it most likely didn’t happen. Judy was too professional to allow herself to be inebriated before a performance; she wasn’t, despite her reputation, a great drinker. As I say, being a kid you evidently misinterpreted what you witnessed.

    • @kellycoleman715

@@elspethcoogan1499 No, we didn’t misinterpret what we saw. She was slurring her words as well as staggering. I used to be a heavy drinker. I quit 38 years ago. I know what drunk people look like.

Why does Carol Burnett say that executives told her a woman couldn't host a variety hour? Judy, Dinah? Maybe there are others.

@@robb7398 Martha Raye had already done it. Her sidekick was comic/former boxer Rocky Graziano. Much of Martha's show was comedy and a lot of Dinah's show was comedy, certainly not strictly music. Carol had a habit of exaggerating, as a lot of showbiz folks do.

Watching these shows, I notice Judy seems tentative, she looks down a lot and she talks down into her chest, she talks under her breath, mumbles and hesitates. It's her speaking style, it worked fine in concerts and when she was interviewed. But I don't think she was the ideal person to host her own TV variety show. It's a "talent" (or more likely, a skill, or a fluke of personality) she didn't seem to posess. She doesn't seem altogether comfortable with the TV camera peering at her. Dinah Shore was better. She couldn't sing or act one tenth as well as Judy, and she wasn't as funny. But she was outgoing and comfortable. She wasn't ambiguous and her humor didn't rely on asides and irony. These shows are great but I don't think they suited Judy 100%. The shows done as concerts suited her better. But even then it would have been better for the network just to give her specials like Fred Astaire had. She probably would have excelled at that.

robb The problem is C.B.S. Wouldn’t let Judy be Judy. They fought her about everything, including her tribute to President Kennedy. Mickey was supposed to be her first guest, which he was because they shot it first, but showed it 5 or 6th. And putting her up against Bonanza was absolutely stupid. Not because of the adults, but the kids. If they would have moved her time slot, she would have had a hit series. It’s like her A STAR IS BORN, if Warner Brothers hadn’t chopped it to death by cutting out about 35 minutes from the film, she probably would have had a gigantic hit and an Oscar that she deserved. As did James Mason, George Curkor, Harold Arlen, Ira Gershwin, and the movie it’s self. Grace Kelly, REALLY! She didn’t even deserve a nomination let alone a win. I think the Academy should Right the Wrong.

@@terrygrant2028 robb's point is well taken, and it has nothing to do with CBS. Judy was a magnificent talent, but she lacked the breezy style of a Dinah Shore or Andy Williams, who kept things moving along and blended well with their guests. Those of us who love Judy accept her quirky mannerisms and eccentricities, but they didn't sit well with many TV viewers.

It's to give her the starting pitch of her singing, that's why she was off key in the take, she didn't hear anything and guessed. Good for her for apologizing right away, very kind and professional to her musicians.

I think Judy and Lena were sticking it to C.B.S.. Judy, is a very touchy-feels person, and I’ll bet the farm that C.B.S. ASKED OR TOLD her to tame it down with Lena. And Judy and Lena poured it on, just to get the goat of the C.B.S. Executive. It just a theory, but I’d bet the farm I’m right.
