Elizabeth it's been so much fun watching you listen to more and more styles of metal music over these last few years. Watching your appreciation for metal grow, symphonic and operatic metal in particular, is almost like looking through a lens into my own exploration of metal as a teenager. I can see it in your body language and your facial expressions when the music starts to give you that power inside, that "YES 💪 *fistpump*" feeling. Makes it harder for you to sit still, your eyebrows raise and you get a huge grin on your face from the anticipation of whats coming up next in the song. And I really love it because that's exactly what it does to me and im sure its the same for many other metalheads. And with your vast knowledge of music, you show me so many other reasons to appreciate the music that I already love, making me love it even more. So thank you E, for all of your hard work, and for everything that you do 🤘❤️🎤
I gotta say too. Dianne Van Giersbergen, Laura Macri and Marcela Bovio has some of the best pure Opera techniques in symphonic metal. Marcela Bovio has a song called Stars which is all classical style
Have a look at Ex Libris' Motherland, the Raid and a Mother's Lament and Xandria's Call of Destiny, A Theatre of Dimensions and Nightfall live, she's insane 😃
This has become my favorite new song. Thank you Diane!!! I wish I had been there for the premiere. i love how the symphonic metal community is so intertwined. Arjen, Joost, Diane, Simone, Floor, Elize, Melissa, Charlotte, and on and on...And Elizabeth helping us all understand it. Oh and let's not forget Arjen adding Brittney to his mix!
Finally more Symphonic Metal analysis! ❤🎉🙌 I first heard Dianne when she was in Xandria. She made quite an impression with her beautiful voice. Too bad her stay there was short lived.
Full circle for me. I knew nothing of European metal and prog bands. A chance viewing of TCV changed my world with Nightwish and Floor. This led to another favourite, Aryeon, and watching the Electric Castle Live BluRay introduced me to Dianne who has become another of my faves.
I've been following Dianne for a couple years now and been a member of her Patreon community for about a yearand a half,, I cannot get enough. and I'm proud to call her a friend :) she has an exquisite voice and I am really curious as to what her 4th single is going to be like. it'll be perfection perfected

Thank you, Elizabeth, for introducing me to Dianne's stunningly beautiful vocals. I normally would never seek out an opera singer on my own. The closest I have in my music collection is Loreena Mckennitt.

I was wondering when Elizabeth was going to do an analysis of a Dianne Van Giersbergen's song, since I have seen Elizabeth give Dianne such praise in the comments section of Dianne's UA-cam performances.
I'm a old school metalhead. That being said, my first love was classical and opera. I love seeing the metal analysis but this just feeds my soul. Thank you.
I saw Dianne sing live with Xandria few years ago here in Buenos Aires, Argentina.... let me with my jaw dropped on the floor. So amazing singer... solid, great performer... love her so much... You must hear with Ex Libris too.
You've done a great job finding something that mixes the opera and the metal. Pretty good guitar riff at the end also, now im off to listen to a few more by this artist
I came across Dianne only months ago. I was absolutely blown away by her beautiful powerful voice. I believe she is underrated I've been a fan of metal since the 80's and have been a fan of symphony, opera and classical music for the same amount of time. In my opinion Dianne is a total package of everything I like about music as a whole plus she is absolutely stunning as well as talented. Ever since hearing her from the first time I have searched for everything Dianne has worked on and found a great video of her doing a song about Game Of Thrones which is amazing
Elizabeth! I've watched your channel for a couple of years now and absolutely adore your warmth, and endearing energy. Also having a huge passion for mental health, it's always lovely seeing you talk about that! However for whatever reason I'd never seen you actually perform before, until just now. And WHAT THE HELL, you're incredible! It was your Martern aller arten performance, which I'm sure you've garnered loads of praise from. My first thought was... I love her even more now!!
I would love for Elizabeth to deep dive the late 90's era gothic symphonic metal. I'm talking old school Tristania, Sirenia, Theater of Tragedy, Penumbra, etc. Many of those bands are still around but have a much different sound than they used to.
As much as we all enjoy presenting new stuffs to delight or assault Eli's ears, and despite being a metalhead and general music nerd for 40 years, ya just can't hear 'em all. I love that I get introducted to new cool talent and sounds on this channel by a team of people I like and admire. I haven't been around in discord much recently due to other concerns but this is still my youtube home :)
I loved this. I know people hear and interpret music differently. As I was listening to this, I was continuously drawn back to the feeling that I heard pieces of the music somewhere else. It took me about 20 minutes into your analysis before it finally hit me. I was making a mental connection with the Nightwish song Shoemaker. I don’t know if anybody else heard that too, but it had a residence with me and I loved it.
I fell in love with Dianne the day Xandria’s video for “Nightfall” came out. Her singing and charisma (with occasional.. reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne style expressions in her eyes) blew me away - and I got to enjoy her amazing singing live too on that tour It’s been a long journey but I feel like the songs she is putting out right now are really showing off her amazing symphonic metal singing and musicianship again - she is up there with Tarja for me in this genre as my fave operatic goddesses ❤
I love this, more like this please… also appreciate your enthusiasm and wonderful analysis! You have introduced so much great music and many wonderful voices
YES!!! Thank you Elizabeth! I've been waiting for a long time for Dianne Van Giersbergen to appear on your channel. I remember that the first song when I heard Dianne's voice was Xandria - Nightfall, it was love at first hearing. I love Metal, there are so many subgenres and bands to discover and Synphonic Metal is my favorite subgenre, there is something powerful and epic in it, yet delicate, beautiful and magical.
I can believe that my dream happened. I always wanted someone who understand opera to react to dianne's music. She deserves so much more recognition. You both are amazing ❤ please make a react to her album with ex libris ANN. IT'S simply a MASTERPIECE.
Thank you for the analysis of Dianne's voice. I am a huge fan of hers. I think that she is currently the only one who represents the Opera Metal genre in a worthy way. Her voice is simply wonderful. I was totally shocked when she left Xandria because for me it was the perfect combination. Now that I know the first songs of her solo project, I am happy about it.
Dianne is without a doubt one of the best symphonic metal singers. Xandria was on track to become as big as Epica or Nightwish, but they nearly ended after they messed things up with her, and every single aspect of her performances are next level incredible and proffesional both in her sound, stage prescence and facial expresions (best in the genre in my opinion) without ever overdoing things. I still hope she becomes as big as she should be, up there with the big names of the scene
Exactly my thougts! Have seen Xandria with Dianne as singer about 10 years back, and was blown away at this time. And today... even better, and receiving the accolade by Arjen Lucassen plus Elisabeth
I wonder if you realize that many people are musically ignorant, but instinctively enjoy music? The beauty of what you do ( here on-line ) is to educate the ignorant. This enriches their appreciation for music. Knowing the mechanics of music / singing etc.brings listening to a new higher level of enjoyment.
Speaking of Arjen, you HAVE to do a react to his recent Ayreon live performance of The Sixth Extinction. Singer heaven, with lots of fun appearances and surprises!
I always look forward to your reactions to symphonic metal; it's been my favorite genre since I discovered it a few years ago. I can't name another style that's so consistently moving.
Finally, you react to Dianne. My favourite singer in symphonic metal. I can't recommend her band Ex Libris with their Ann trilogy enough. Symphonic Prog metal with Dianne and her versatile sound. Looking for a video then go with "The Motherland". Big symphonic metal sound with a huge male choir.
I tend to be picky about this genre of music. I enjoyed this performance. Thanks to Dianne Van Giersbergen for being in the chat during the premiere. The smallest act of kindness can have a huge positive impact.
Dianne is such a great singer. She deserves much more recognition. Her contributions in Ex-Libris and Xandria are impressive. Fun fact: Floor Jansen was part of the jury in her master's dissertation.
Such an amazing song. The beauty of this song also reminds me of a EPICA song feat. APOCALYPTICA. They were on tour last year and had some great collabs.
So glad to see you doing a reaction to Dianne. She's probably one of my favorite vocalists and I saw her live with Xandria a time or two and she is just the best showman I think I've seen.
So good! Only thing missing was a big Floor-type note at the end. It felt like she had room to go just a little higher, and if she had, it would have brought home the glory. But, otherwise, it was spectacular. Loved seeing Elizabeth so happy, too. It was like when you bring an old friend to hang out with your new friends and you want everyone to love them as much as you do. Ha.
Arjen Lucassen is the Willy Wonka of Ear Candy. He continues to work with so many strong singers and Dianne is one of the best. I am looking forward to much more of her solo work. The Netherlands is truly a melting pot of wonderful musicians and composers right now.
Willy Wonka?? Hmm, i can relate to that. He is the mastermind , and he has no problems finding artists, every time he hints of something new,,the line up and wants to join. There's nobody saying no to him.
Dianne has been on my radar since I think 2011 when I heard the Medea demo by Ex Libris. Absolutely stellar! Was kind of disappointed when the CD dropped because all the life had been produced out of it. Then Dianne joined Xandria, pretty much blowing up Ex Libris. I got to listen to her live with Xandria in Tilburg. Most excellent! At the entrance there was a sign saying the show was being recorded for a live DVD. Guess what? That live DVD never happened. Then Xandria fired Dianne for the temerity of asking for more rest between concerts, repeating their pattern of abuse towards Lisa and Manuela. Manuela Kraller was one of the prettiest dramatic voices I have ever heard and I really miss her. Dianne has managed to restart her career, partially thanks to Arjen Lucassen who is the most excellent judge of talent. I have been subscribed since since your GLS reaction, but this might be my favourite reaction yet! My favourite opera singer of all time is Gwyneth Jones singing Brunnhilde.
Elizabeth! You really really need to give The Gathering (fronted by Anneke Van Giersbergen) a good listen: Travel, In Motion, On Most Surfaces, Leaves, The Earth is My Witness to name a few tracks. She inspired Floor Jensen to be a frontwoman in metal. She has one of the most amazing and unique voices in European metal. Cannot recommend enough. Her voice when she was younger was unmatched and she seems to only get better with age. She recently did a show with Marko Hietala!
I don't remember what other video I saw, but thanks to you Elizabeth, this is the second spring I go to a Carmina Burana concert. I highly recommend any symphonic metal fan to go see that piece live. And Dianne, she is just amazing, I have loved all three solo songs, and I highly encourage everyone to join her patreon.
I remember Dianna’s work with Xandria, and was shocked when she quit them. I will say that the new Xandria with Ambre Vourvahis is excellent, and hopefully has learned from their past mistakes in how they treat their front women.
Seriously, when i first heard i was like: "no thanks..." but now this gives me a whole new look at the song. The guitarsolo yeah... thats 100% Arjen, such an own style of playing and note choice.
I’ve been following TCV for some years now, as I have been a huge symphonic metal fan for almost 20 years. But this is the first time I’m commenting and that’s because DIANNE is a majestic artist, her voice is just in perfect balance and her music and singing style is so beautifully done. Her work in Ex Libris is simple awesome and deep and her solo music she’s been releasing feels like true symphonic metal (in a world where it could feel this genre is dying) she’s giving us a great music quality and deserves a LOT of more recognition! I get the chance to see her live with Xandria back in 2017 and let me breathless.
Yes! Thats two singers on my 'list' of rock/metal singers Elizabeth needs to hear that she has reacted to recently...Miljenko Matijevic, and now Dianne van Giersbergen 🙂 Now still waiting on reactions to Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation), Jorn Lande, Matt Smith (Theocracy), Daniel Heiman (Lost Horizon, Sacred Outcry)
Well well well, I am so glad that Liz bumped up an Arjen review with a special #reaction today. I discovered Ayreon through "The Theory of Everything", and think I suggested here. Dianne v.G. is new to me, enjoy how she can bridge from "full symphony" productions to contemporary, electronic instruments - I'll definitely look out for more of hers.
I came back to listen again. I love that Elizabeth was so excited that she almost started to sing along. :) And that she slipped with a certain word. hehehe
If I hear a song/artist for the first time I want to enjoy the music as well, get the feeling of a song. Your enthousiastic and I get that, especially with a voice like this. But apart from your analysis, let me enjoy and get acquiainted with new music.
just googling Dianne made me realise that Floor, Anneke and Dianne all come from within like 20km from where I live.. I guess I missed their vocal boat
For some reason, this reminded me of A Gentle Storm w/ Anneke Van Giersbergen. A one-off project band put together by Arjen Lucassen like 9 years ago or something. The album The Diary is one of my all-time faves, just great compositions. The Heart of Amsterdam is a great song and lead single off of the album and just a lot of fun to listen to. I humbly suggest if you can to at least give it a listen to on your own time. Something tells me you won't be disappointed.🙂🤘
Funny you mentioned a gentle storm, about half an hour ago I just watched a live performance of the song, with both Anneke and Dianne, and now i'm watching Ellisabets reaçtion to Anneke. Since i don't believe in coincidence, it must be something else, what, i don't know, but keep it coming 😂
Thank you for doing this one, Elizabeth. I love watching you nerd out on things operatic. I think Blackbriar also filmed her previous music video. Speaking of Blackbriar, I'd love to see you react to their latest single, "Moonflower" with Marjana Semkina.
I've n never been a fan of opera or symphony orchestra music but Elizabeth and Dianne have given me a new appreciation and enjoyment of it in small doses.. as for symphonies, groups like Manheim steamroller and trans Siberian orchestra and yngwie malmsteen playing with Japanese philharmonic orchestra have given me new enjoyment of that.
Wow... what an introduction to an entire genre of music! Just what I needed, and (shameless plug coming) being a Spotify client... a few clicks and a whole new musical world has opened!
My first reply seems to be missing, maybe because I put a shop link on it. So I will try again. Digital only no physical release of Dianne until the album is finished. At a song every few months (this is song 3) this might take a while. But cd/vinyl is available for her band Ex Libris.
A gift to hear Dianne Van Giersbergen, a wonderful Spinto Soprano; gorgeous dark timbre, sublime vibrato! A Spinto is rare. The Netherlands has many great classically trained vocalists in symphonic metal. Dianne Van Giersbergen; Spinto Soprano- high notes of a Lyric, dramatic climaxes, darker tone. Floor Jansen; Dramatic Soprano- powerful, rich, emotive voice that can sing over, or cut through, a full orchestra (or Heavy Metal Band). Simone Simons; Coloratura Soprano - lighter, bright, agile, ornamentation in upper extension. Thanks! More symphonic metal (and opera) Elizabeth; pretty please.
@@cwm8565Simone repeatedly said she's a Soprano, not a Mezzo. Rangeplanet classified Simone's range: Soprano- strong highs not lows. When Floor and Simone sang Stabat Mater (Pergolesi) it was rearranged because Floor, despite also being a Soprano, had to sing the Mezzo/ Countertenor part (Simone couldn't). Floor, Dramatic Soprano, has strength in the lowest portions of the Soprano range. Watch Floor and see how carefully she controls her mouth and body; you need a ton of breath, not power, to sustain notes in the lowest portions of your range.
The part that you Elizabeth likes most, where Dianne sings the words symphonic tragedy with layered tracks, the chord progression there, I believe, is exactly the same as in “for the love of the princess” (Braveheart) by James Horner in the build up to the crescendo

It was like when you bring an old friend to hang out with your new friends and you want everyone to love them as much as you do. Ha.
Wonderful. Glad to add this to my music collection.
Holy moly! Dianne Van Giersbergen plus extra Elizabeth? What did I do to deserve this? I'll do it again.
Yep ❤️
Valley Of The Queen - Marcela Bovio, Floor and Anneke
Thanks!
Can’t believe I am late to this!!
Typing this before I even see it because I know it’s going to be superb!
Seriously, when i first heard i was like: "no thanks..." but now this gives me a whole new look at the song. The guitarsolo yeah... thats 100% Arjen, such an own style of playing and note choice.
I must admit i have never heard of Dianne i absolutely loved this.
I love the color of her voice andalways thought that the music of Xandria somehow isn't doing her voice justice. This song does, love it!
Yes! Thats two singers on my 'list' of rock/metal singers Elizabeth needs to hear that she has reacted to recently...Miljenko Matijevic, and now Dianne van Giersbergen 🙂
Now still waiting on reactions to Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation), Jorn Lande, Matt Smith (Theocracy), Daniel Heiman (Lost Horizon, Sacred Outcry)
Loved your analysis of the song Elizabeth.
Hands down, Dianne is one of if not my favorite vocalist. Please take a dive into one of her pieces from her time with Xandria.
for more Ayreon I'd love to hear your take on "And the Druids Turn to Stone" sung by Damian Wilson. His voice is incredible.
another great, hard hitting song. Im glad i tuned in.
i hasor a sujestion
the fall of eve - my heart holds the light
is also, operatic.
just googling Dianne made me realise that Floor, Anneke and Dianne all come from within like 20km from where I live.. I guess I missed their vocal boat
that blue dress, omg sublime 🥳
MY QUEEEEEN DIANNE
Get her on for a teatime chat. That would be fascinating. And I'm sure very educational for a lot of us.
I love the trans Siberian orchestra, id love to see there Christmas show
Scott, check out Manheim steamroller, if you like tso, you'll like them as well I think.
@mikedicarlo9304 thanks for the suggestion
Wow... what an introduction to an entire genre of music! Just what I needed, and (shameless plug coming) being a Spotify client... a few clicks and a whole new musical world has opened!
yeah same with me, not sure if I heard this type of music before and it has already lead me to a few other songs by the artist
She is a beautiful singer.
This is the future of opera. If you want to attract the younger generations.
Had the fortune to see Dianne with Xandria back in the day here in Vegas in a small club with about 50 of us
I remember that! Def a good night!
we Need Tea Time With Dianne Van Giersbergen! That would be Awesome!
Dianne is incredible
I have loved Dianne since she was introduced as Xandria's singer. I have posted my admiration of her on her FB page. She is so damn talented
Where on earth can I get Dianne on Vinyl or CD, bloody amazing
My first reply seems to be missing, maybe because I put a shop link on it. So I will try again.
Digital only no physical release of Dianne until the album is finished. At a song every few months (this is song 3) this might take a while. But cd/vinyl is available for her band Ex Libris.
She has a prog metal band ExLibris and they have 3 albums out. And also the 2 Xandria albums she was on: Sacrificium and A Theatre of Dimensions.
Simone is more of a mezzo tbh
