Of course ditch the filter pad and use a sponge with medium-coarse porosity.

How often do the cartridges need replacing, and by replacing them, does that not remove a great deal of beneficial bacteria? This is always my concern with these types of cartridge filters.

Don’t use cartridges. Just put your own combination of sponges, bio media etc. then you just pull out the sponge here and there and rinse it out

@@caseymoore4759 that is what I do with any cartridge filters I have bought (specifically Top Fin's which come with their all-inclusive 5 g), but I was curious as to why Buce Plant would recommend this type of filter...hence my original question. Thanks for your response, though.

@@beaka63 Maybe they include them because it's good to use a regular cartridge when beginning a new tank? After time, you switch it over as you said. On my HOBs I stop using activated charcoal after a month or two, but they're good to have for various reasons I think.

Don't need cartridges. Use your own materials. Piece of narrow cut sponge to slide in, and a little mesh bag of a small amt of whatev your filter media is like Buce plant's Neo Media which I love (3 versions, 1 lowers pH, 1 raises, and 1 should bring to neutral.)

@@carlapappalardo1901 yes, that's what I have done, and would do, but as I clearly stated above, I was wondering why Buce would recommend this type of filter/media, if there was something special that I was unaware of.

I have 3 of what must be the overseas/original version before anyone over here in the US ever sold any aout 5 yrs ago. They are great little filters. Perfect for nano tanks. I've used on the standard 2.5 gallon and a 5.5 gallon. I think I may have even used it for a short time on the 10 gal that was lightly stocked. If I need more they will certainly be bought from Buce. It's narrow so doesn't take much room front to back. And it's also perfect for a low shelf tank since it has the extension tube that you don't have to use, so it's low clearance.
