I have a big tank (45 gal) that is heavily stocked, and I have gone through a bunch of hang on the back filters that I have eventually ended up discarding for a variety of reasons. I was ready to try something different, and was looking at canisters when I came across the Tidal hang on the back filters. I like SeaChem products in general, so I decided to give the Tidal filter a try. It was literally the last hang on the back that I had not tried. I ended buying the Tidal 75 because I couldn’t find the 55 at the time. And it had the two flow controls. I put the filter on and just used the media that came with it. It worked like a charm. My tanks parameters are fantastic. I did add a de-Nitrate bag from SeaChem because my tank is heavily populated and my nitrates were on the high side of normal, but I kept the sponge and bio-balls and now my tank’s numbers are golden, all the fish are active and my plants are gorgeous. Love this filter.

I've been running the Tidal 55 on my 29g tank for about 4 years now. It's so quiet. That was important for us as the tank is in the living room. I love it. Keeps my tank crystal clear. I love that it restarts on its own. A big deal for us as we live in a building that gets random power outages. The flow adjustment works very well. Two minor complaints....that blue dial!!! why did they do that lol. The other is when the water level dips too low....down about 3" or so, the skimmer will get crazy noisy. Doesn't happen often. I norm keep the tank topped up, but there have been times when I've been sick, and my water change gets extended into a few weeks where it will happen.

I appreciate your reviews so much... I had convinced myself that an AquaClear was the right way to go for my tank upgrade, but you mentioning the pump placement/power outage issue is what ultimately sold me on a Tidal. It's not unusual for my apartment to lose power a couple times per week at any hour of the day (or night) and I'm afraid the AquaClear would have ended in disaster (or at least a lot of frustration). I wasn't even aware the Tidal had so many thoughtful features when I ordered it, but I'm excited about them! Thanks for the honesty :)

I've always been an aquaclear fan but i bought a tidal 75 due to your review and gave it a try. So I replaced the aquaclear 70 with the tidal. I was so excited because of the features. However it's not for me. I started to notice gunk and debris gathering on the bottom of the tank and when I cleaned the filter the media was always clean. I was used to seeing the sponge filthy like the aquaclear. It is quiet until the water level falls below the skimmer then its noisy even though it's still above the water max line. Well anyways one day I noticed the water flow wasn't flowing Ike it usually does. So I checked the media and everything was clean. So I took out the filter and all the debris had built up on the motor and not on the filter. So I had to take it apart and cleaned it. So the filter wasn't filtering the water it was just all getting clogged on the motor. So I switched back to the aquaclear. I really had high hopes but it does have its flaws. Also the "heater holder" is small. I don't know what kind of heater it can hold because the heater doesnt fit. So I still have to stick the heater on the side of the tank.

I used the Seachem Tidal 110 to replace a Fluval Aquaclear for my 90 gallon and I can not believe that I ever lived without this. The filter is self priming...that speaks for itself! Power went off on Fluval Aquaclear while I was not at home and it ran dry, which ruined the motor. Biomedia is minimal and I used already acclimated ceramic rings to beef up the bag, really not a problem just might want to order a little extra if you don't already have enough.
Flash forward 6 months and the Seachem Tidal saved my living room carpet! After getting the AQ110 (mentioned above) warranted, I put it on my 90 with the Tidal 110. It was a bit of an overkill but didn't want the AQ110 just sitting around. Around 2 am one night, the Tidal skimmer started sucking air so I knew it was a little low, I turned the skimmer down and went back to bed. Around 4 am, the Tidal skimmer was making the same noise so I knew it was lower than the second intake slots and I jumped out of bed. The AQ110 had sprung a leak around the motor and had soaked my curtains, and carpet in that area but was still pumping water out. If it had pumped all night before getting to a lower level where the intake tube ended, I would have had about +/-70 gallons of water in my living room. Thanks to Seachem Tidal and the noises it makes due to low water, I only had about 10-15 gallons in a one foot area around my tank. AQ110 never came back into my house and I bought another Seachem Tidal 110 to take it's spot! I also have a 55 Tidal on my 50 gallon. Seachem is an amazing company!

I have the Aqua Clear 110 and had recently bought a new one. Wish I had known about these. Was always having a problem with noise, replaced the impeller a couple of times, the motor burned out twice and the basket was always floating up and knocking the lid off and then it would vibrate which would drive me insane. It never restarts well either after water changes and I have to pour water into the filter to get it pumping. The new one is doing much better but I still have the issue of priming it when restarting. Thankfully this filter is much quieter than the old one but if I ever replace it again I will get a Tidal. Definitely going to get one for my turtle tank when I upgrade him to a bigger tank. Would definitely love the fact the lid becomes a tray so I don't have to worry about dripping water as I walk to the sink or carry extra buckets around.

Sorry to disagree with some of these comments. I did my own UA-cam review on these Tidals and was all excited at the beginning. Did some mods too. I had two Tidal 55 running on a single 55 gal tank with 5 big goldfish and 2 bristlenose plecos. Otherwise bare bottom tank. Ten months later, I removed both of them and here's why: 1/ the volume filtration capacity of the box itself is small as compared to other filters 2/ the underwater motor and impeller is under the water level. Yes, this will make it self-priming, but all the uneaten food and detritus accumulates quickly and sometimes the motor won't re-start unless you take the whole motor enclosure apart and clean the impeller, which is a real pain. If you have fishes with high bio-load, you are better off looking elsewhere. This is my honest opinion, not trying to put anybody down.

It's a nice set up but I also hate when it runs low on water because it tends to start gurgling faster than your basic hangovers plus you are right if you want the flow consistence you must take out the motor and clean it especially if you have a heavy stock or planted planted tank BUT you gotta do the same on most filters, in all its a pretty good filter, I give it 8/10 😉

I've done fresh and marine tanks for years. Been out of the hobby for a while due to extensive travel. Jumping back into a small 40 breeder based reef tank. Always liked HOB filter but the issue of surface skimming is tough with a HOB filter on a salt tank. This looks like it solves two common issues, the surface skimming and the priming. Ordered one of the 75s from your site based on this video and a few others but your video was the most informative and your prices are good.

I cannot rave enough about this filter. (Sorry - long post!) Your previous HOB review series convinced me to choose the Tidal 110 for my dream 5ft 100 gallon that I set up during initial COVID quarantine back in March, and I can't thank you enough. Every little fine detail of this filter that you mention in this video isn't just hype - This filter is a workhorse! My favorite part by FAR is the removable media basket - a total game-changer. Makes me a better fish keeper who doesn't dread doing my media maintenance, which makes me actually clean it as often as I should. I added a polishing pad over the original sponge (cut a reusable template from the sponge shape), biorings to replace the media that came with (reused their bag) and tons of crushed coral. Plenty of room! Internal motor is a must in my book, and the adjustable feature helps when needed to hear my TV (although usually it's quiet enough not to matter). I'm supersensitive to sound, and after my initial filter came it had just a little extra hum to it (my family didn't even notice, but drove me crazy). Seachem's awesome customer service worked with me for a month troubleshooting, even sending me a replacement motor to try, then eventually sending me an entirely new filter that is AWESOME (and super quiet!). Great filter - best tip ever! And your website price is very competitive. Thanks KG! (BTW not sponsored by KG - ha ha).

I'm cycling a standard size 55g tank right now. I'm using the topfin silent stream 75 it came with, and I've added a seachem tidal 110. I've modded yhe topfin to block the water from coming out of the right chamber and stuffed that chamber with sponge/filter floss and the left side I've put cycled media from another tank. The seachem there's no mods needed. I do wish the extender tube on the intake was longer because fully extended it only goes down about halfway to the bottom. But in every other possible way this seachem tidal is amazing. I'm not even planning on over stocking. Just some tetras and 1 angelfish. However...my lights tend to go out a lot during summer storms here in FL, so I love the self priming feature. I really like the seachem matrix as well. I think it's better than the cycled ceramic rings I have in the topfin. I'll probably end up moving 1 bad of that cycled media over to the seachem...but yeah it's a fantastic filter

I have the tidal 75 on my African cichlid tank. I like all the features it has to offer, especially not having to buy a replacement filter every few months. It also has some features a lot of companies have overlooked over the years, only thing I did was add another finer layer of filtration media for the smaller particles that got by the larger one. I have to say that it works great and have no complaints.I did add an expert matic internal filter for a water polisher to get that crystal clear water that I have to have in my tanks 🤙🏽

    Hi John,
I've enjoyed watching your videos over the last couple of years; very informational and helpful.
Just stumbled onto your Tidal HOB review and have an observation and a question for you.
I have been in the hobby for almost 60 years and have seen a lot of filtration systems come and go. When I started back in the 1960s, undergravel filters were the standard. Eventually, those fell out of favor and HOBs started their dominance. In the Mid 1970s, I purchased my first of many HOBs that worked differently than any currently on the market.
This somewhat surprises me as these old Fluvals, if I remember correctly, were much easier to keep clean. These were top to bottom filters. The filter box was feed by 2 or 3 siphoning lift tubes which flowed onto filter floss then thru media and sponge, which rested on a dividing plate, separating the now filtered water from the pump. The pump impeller was in the very bottom at one side of the box with a long shaft connecting to the above out-of-water motor. The pump directed the water up and out back into the tank via a connected plastic directional tube.
I will admit that this style of pump was a little more difficult to maintain because the long shaft was prone to rust, making impeller replacement difficult. But, I rarely had to pull the sponge or media, because the water's first contact was with the floss, which caught all the debris and it was easily discarded and replaced. At present, all the better HOBs seem to be bottom to top flowing, requiring the removal of some kind of basket assembly to clean the sponge and media. My last old filter was still operational when about 10 years ago, a LFS offered a free trade of and old filter for new Fluval HOB, which I jumped on. The Aquaclear Company rep was amazed to see such an old still working filter.
All my HOBs are now AquaClears of various sizes and for the most part, they work well. I just miss the ease of pulling off the floss, and dropping a new chunk of it in when needed, only taking mere seconds to accomplish. Having to get my arms wet removing/cleaning/replacing sponges is something I do to particularly relish and did not need with the old style.
The only filters, that I have seen, to offer that type of ease are the over-flow drip towers with sumps, which I find too risky to operate in my carpeted family room, and frankly too complex for my aging brain.
So my question... Why do you suppose they stopped making them and... are you aware of any top to bottom flow HOBs out there? I have considered fabricating one but, would rather not have to.
Again, thanks to both you and Lisa for all the work you put into the hobby for the benefit of us all... Much Appreciated.

Just getting back into aquariums but this time with the combined knowledge of UA-cam and all my mistakes in past lol. Just a small tank but moving up from a 10gal we got for betta and a few small fish. PetSmart didn’t carry the Tidal series & I hadn’t watched this video yet. One thing I’d highly recommend after learning the hard way on Aquaclear (or every other HOB filter brand) - Tidal filters have HIGH back & sides! You need this extra height to have more media & so water doesn’t overflow out sides of filter! Seachem thought of everything!! Thank you KG for the review and I’d add that last point, if I explained it right. Best wishes & keep up the great videos!

I own a 2nd hand Tidal 75 version, the bottom inlet pipes have very little suction so the flow controller for that is pretty insignificant. The main suction of water is thru the skimmer part which the flow controller on top really controls. I hope seachem sells parts like the heater holder & back adjuster due to the first owner lost it already when he sold me this filter. Also my advice to whoever buys this is to not ignore the blue thing that rises that calls for cleaning the filter. Water will overflow from the back slots of the cover when the sponge at the bottom of filter is clogged-up. Also don't allow water level to be below the min water line indicated as I have said above, the bottom suction is really insignificant and wont pull water from bottom if your water level evaporated below the min water line requirement for the skimmer.

Poly-Fil, Purigen, Chemi-Pure Blue, and Marine Pure don’t remove green water algae or brown tannins long term. The only all-in-one filter media which does that, plus polishes the water, cleans out detritus, neutralizes odors, lowers ammonia, phosphates, chlorine, nitrites, nitrates, etc. - is Marineland’s Zeolite Blend. Too many good points to list as far as its capabilities, and it’s amazingly cheap.

OMG John, I have watched this video 2x. I am in the market for a 65 gallon Aquarium and I will be purchasing one of these filters. Can you recommend an aquarium company with nice clear aquariums. Do you prefer glass or acrylic? I really value your opinion. I love this filter, I will get it from your website. But can you do a video about the aquariums and stands what to look for. I am putting this aquarium in my living room and I am so excited to finally give my 2 girls (angel fish) a new home they will be so happy. I have been a big fan of hang-on filters for small tanks since 1977 when I put a large Dynaflow one on my 120litre tank (that's 30 gallons for those of you in Liberia, Myanmar, and U.S.). I use sump filters for the best filtration. There have been improvements ever since such as what you have highlighted and this brand looks to be quite good. I found that the biggest weakness have been the pumps which don't always start after a power-on due to build up of surface growth on the pump internals. I pull the impellers apart and clean that area every three months and replace any worn rubbers and replace the impellers when the magnetism becomes weak.

I've used Tidals for almost 3 years and I love them for all of John's reasons. It's quality, reliable, easy to maintain, and quiet. The only tank I think it would not be a good solution on is for breeding anything with very small fry. Although you can put a prefilter on the lower intake, you can't on the skimmer and it also intakes water from the middle just below the motor housing and that can't be covered easily either. But for all others its awesome.

I’m an Aquaclear faithful when it comes to HOB, love my Fluvals for Canisters, but one thing I don’t like about Aquaclears is the rattling top, have mine off on both, these look like it’ll give Aquaclear a run for their money, especially with that surface skimmer, but wonder how that will work if your water level is high 🧐 the compartment on these looks a bit small too, but if these are built more solid, may give one a try..., any chance of these giving off stray voltage since the pump is inside the aquarium and the plug is not grounded? any input is much appreciated 🤙🏽

I have a 20 gallon tank that I'm about to breed shrimp in it. And then I have a 37 gallon that already has fish and shrimp. So I'm guessing I'd like to get two of the 55's but I'm curious about what kinds of media you might recommend and how best to determine the flow for each tank. I currently have a Marineland Penguin Biowheel 350 on my big tank and the 200 on my small one. But I haven't been happy with not being able to control the flows on these. However I do like that you can make it a four-stage by using the included charcoal/mesh filter along with ceramic beads and then the Biowheel. So I hope this isn't too long, but I'd really like to know your thoughts on this. Thanks a million for the video. I really appreciate you putting it out. Forrest Smith

Just for clarity guys, the bottom flow control isnt a flow control as such, its to control the bias between the skimmer and the bottom input, open = more bottom flow, less skim, closing = less bottom flow more skim. I believe this is correct, maybe someone else can confirm, never seen this filter before. Top dial total flow control.

These filters work well and provide good surface agitation, but they are loud really loud for a HOB filter with motor in the tank. I do not know why no one mentions how loud these filters are. I have the 110 and I have changed the motor once in a year and half, but still just as loud.
This is the main filter I hear all night in my living room down the hallway into my back bedroom.
I have 3 tanks in my living room: a 20 gal with an Aquaclear 70 and bubbler, a 90 gal with FX-6 with a modified media arrangement Cascade 100 filter that is 2 1/2 yrs old original motor with motor and my 3rd tank is a 50 gal with an Eheim G90 canister( the most quiet filter I own) and a Tidal 110 that was supposed to replace another Aquaclear 70 HOB that I was getting sick of changing out the cheap propellers.
The Tidal 110 also has a skimmer that gets plugged up with floating food and is designed in a manner that disrupts flow from bottom strainer, most of suction is around the motor and strainer. The basket and enclosure could of been designed in more rectangle shape to provide more media storage. And lastly there needs to be more drainage holes installed at bottom and low sides of media basket to prevent it from plugging up so easily. When all the flaws have been eliminated it will be a better filter.

I just bought the new version of the Tetra 30-60 a month ago for a 40 gallon tank. I really like it so far. It has flow control also. The pump is in the back but doesn't have issues pulling in water when dry. It doesn't have the skimmer though. Does the skimmer make enough difference in water quality for me to trade the Tetra 30-60 for the Tidal55? Would I be able to get rid of the annoyingly loud powerhead on the other side of the tank? The water doesn't ever really get that dirty with the fish I have. I just get paranoid about oxygen levels. All I have is 3 black fin tetras, 2 white fin, 2 red eye tetras, 1 ember tetra, 1 rasbora, a young pleco, 2 blind cavefish, 1 amano, and like 8 ghost shrimp. And of course a couple live plants. I've had the majority of these fish for 2 years and the water never seems to be that dirty at all with regular maintenance. I just absolutely hate how loud the powerhead is. I have a regular air pump going to Mrs Puff and it's not even half as loud but it's not shooting near as many bubbles either.

🤔 love the video, great feedback I’m gonna have to try it out. However I think you’re making the wrong assumption about the pump being in or out. I have had several filters with the pump outside of the aquarium and even when the power goes out it has no problem starting back up because it’s still filled up with water. It’s essentially the same as if you just unplug it. The only time it becomes an issue is when the water level drops (like during a water change), at that point it’ll drain and will struggle starting back up unless you add water.

I know this post was a long time ago, but I think it really depends on the filter. I've had filters that haven't restarted due to the water being pumped out as the power shut down and not having enough to reprime the pump. Everyone has had different experiences, so he's not making the 'wrong assumption' he's just making an observation based on his own (and others, just not yours) experiences.

It's kind of funny you made this video today because I was looking for new hang on the back filter I'm trying to decide if I want to do a hang on the back filter for if I want to upgrade and go to canisters here's my question I usually don't use activated carbon but I do notice that it does greatly improve the water conditions of the tank so I'm going to come right out and say that I raise goldfish all stigma aside I like goldfish. But now you'll understand the reason for my next question goldfish create a huge waste load I'm currently using probably 6 hang on the back filters just to maintain my tank I don't mind I like the waterfall sound. But I have the ones that you can basically get at Meijer which are fine I love my Cascades but they just don't seem to have a longevity to them and now even after maintenance just say I completely scrubbed it out which is which I don't like to do my water flow is still could considerably decreased and I want to add the activated carbon because I do have tannins in my water from different fish and decorations so the way that this particular filter is set up it does look like something I would want but my question is is the filter going to be pretty strong next year as it is this year cuz I'm probably going to get to 110 $74 on a filter that is going to bail on me on it and a year or just not be as efficient doesn't seem like a good use of my money so here's the question there is those bio balls a looks like a scrubbing or a media filter and a huge gap which is great going to a drone stock but how much damage am I going to do to my bio balls if I throw activated carbon on top or can I not do that like I said I don't usually use activated carbon but I would like a little bit more of a clear I mean it's not like they're dirty it's just they're a little off color and I know activated carbon will help polish that up or do you feel I would be better off with just getting a decent size canister. now I understand you have hundreds if not thousands of commas to come in every day but I would appreciate any guidance if you wouldn't mind giving I've been doing fishkeeping now for about 6 years so I'm not exactly a complete novice but I haven't used canisters before I will most likely be building my own and it'll be a combination between a canister and a waterfall that's something I had an idea for but I would like your suggestion on what would be best again I raise goldfish lots of waste I probably do two water changes a week just because I want to take care of my fish.

My only comment is that you didn't mention the #1 feature of the filter that sold me on this filter that I haven't seen on any other HOB filter. That being that the water is pumped in to the bottom of the filter, and up through the media, not dumped onto the top of the media so that most of the water just goes back into the tank and escapes going through the media on its way back to the tank.

I run the intake and outflow wide open. I found the leveling knob was hard to use in my acrylic tank and put a filter pad outside the tank to level the bowl. I love that this filter skims the surface and how quiet it runs. Really good design. Thanks for the video and recommendation.

So running 2 75 filters works? Was wondering since mine is 125 gallon.

the thing I like about the aqua clears is that if you have extentions on the intake tube you can do water changes without unplugging the filters, with the skimmer part on the tidal I'm assuming you would not be able to do that? (break the suction) I would be sold on a tidal if you could turn off the skimmer, also someone else mentioned that the skimmer really decreases the suction of the bottom intake.

I have the tidal 75 on my 55g and I love it, super easy to maintain and what I really love about it is I haven’t spent any money on it since I bought it about a year ago, I did buy a big charcoal pad, some extra media, and a big bag of polyfil at the same time, but that’s all. Absolutely love it

Mine cavitated a lot but it finally stopped when i jiggled the fan a bit. Really hard to take the casing off to get inside. I took the white insert out and just filled the whole back. Having the bottom up flow is the best aspect along with the strong flow when it is clean. If you dont service it or have too much sponge it will overflow out of the dial on the left. If you care for it often though, it is really effective. I also put a screen over the surface skimmer for shrimp. Not very shrimp safe lol.

Thanks for the video! Just bought the 110. Using internal filters now. They work great, but take up too much space in the aquarium. I used to have canisters, but they are too much manual labor. This seems to be the perfect one for my 100 gallon. Only time will tell..

After your first comments on the Tidal-35 I decided to get a replacement on my 29 gal tank. We have lose of power several times already this year so I off to the store. Thinking about the 55 now so the part of turning the flow down gives me the opportunity to have the lower inflow as well. Thank you. MarineRaider Frank

In the United Kingdom, everyone is mainly about external canister filters or sumps, but in the States, we hear so much about hang-on-the-backs, like most things in life there is good quality and not so good but I am rather impressed by your review of the Seachem range as they do exactly what they are supposed to do, there is room for different media in the basket plus so very easy to maintain and extremely quiet. So John thank you for this honest video as im now converted to the Seachem hang on backs and will be purchasing the 75s as i return to the hobby Paul from the UK

I love mine i got a tidal 55. By the way it has 3 intakes. You have the skimmer there's Inlet on the pump housing and then you have for the bottom so you're pulling from top middle and bottom. I consider it a hang in the back canister filter because of its modularity because what media you can run you're not stuck with running a cartridge

I now have the tidal 55 to replace my aquaclear 50 and boy is this an improvement but I still use the aquaclear in the same tank with just polyfill and crushed coral to polish and raise the ph in my aquarium and only run it when the water is getting fogged up a bit because I still have coral as substarte and filter media in the tidal and wow this is an amazing setup! My water is CRYSTAL clear!

I use 2 x Seachem Tidal 110 HOB's for my 400 litre Discus tank. They are brilliant! My only wish is for an even deeper chamber. I run a longer intake on one to clean up the muck at the bottom of the tank (2ft tall glass)
