- Highway 89a from Prescott to Jerome, Arizona is one of the best drives in the state. Making your way from Prescott Valley through the winding mountain roads, sharp turns and switchbacks all the way down to Americas Largest Ghost Town of Jerome.
Jerome is a copper mining town that dates back to 1876, and while its had many ups and downs since its first mining claims, you can still visit this historic ghost town and check out one of the many shops, saloons, restaurants, or stay at a HAUNTED HOTEL if you dare!
Once we finish making our drive through the Mingus Mountains we'll be walking around Jerome and getting a first hand look at this ghost town.

The mining area you are looking at is the remnants of the old Verde Central Mine. The property is now owned by Freeport-McMoran. I've been with the Clarkdale Historical Society for 17 years and have done research on this as well as the UVX and UVCC Copper companies

I am not sure if my son and I took this road on our trip last year, but we did drive through Jerome, from Phoenix after changing our route. He was driving and making the decisions, but..... we both were surprised by the forests, the views, and then Jerome is cool. Whatever road we took, on our way to Sedona, we did a lot of screaming! We were too afraid to pull over for a lot of those stops because it looked like a person could just slide on the gravel right over! Thanks for sharing, the drone makes your videos so much more than just driving! I appreciate it. It was exactly 1 year ago when him and I took that fabulous trip, and I was feeling a little sad, wishing we were still there.... so this helped a lot! Keep making videos and having fun!

We were not expecting any of it, but even though it was scary, it was beautiful. I would not recommend driving it at night or in bad weather. Thank you again. I 100% agree. I know quite a few people back home that drive truck and do a lof RV vacations...they are always looking ahead on Google maps and Google earth to see if they are worth doing ,how steep they are and if they have the stomach for them. It's kind of like a detailed guide through the canyon! Thanks again! Currently working on Sundays video!

Very pretty! The rule of the road is to pull over if you have a line of cars behind you, let them pass. No one drives the speed limit, I've tried!

That road is a blast on a motorcycle.
I lived in Prescott for about a year in 2019-2020. Often would take that route for it's scenic views and experienced the same type of agressive drivers you did but they were not just in lifted trucks but cars too. After visiting Jerome I often would continue on to Sedona for a real eye full!

Okay,, yes I did pull a small travel trailer with wife, dog and mother in law in tow. We drove into and out of Jerome on 89A. I was a lot younger than and it was a good trip. Especially after pulling through town, I unhitched the trailer and drove back up to Jerome to see a friend who lived there until her death. Thanks for these videos,,,,,

My Brother graduated in Jerome in 1970 at MHS, I Graduated in Cottonwood 10 Years later when the HS was moved there. Love the Verde Valley

Beautiful! Missing home! I did one with my phone on the dash and drove up the mountain from Cottonwood to PV. Love this drive. In 2015, traveling from Louisiana back home to Arizona, I drove 9 hours without stopping for anything but gas and ended up overheating, blowing the radiator right up there on that mountain at dusk, right on that curve at 15 seconds.
I had to get people to literally go to either end of the road where it straightens out enough to stop traffic and tell them I was stranded in the middle of the road waiting on a tow truck (3hrs wait there......)...so they didn't come around that curve and plow into me, and one or all of us go careening over the side of the embankment. I have never been more scared of being stranded in my life. Got towed safely to Prescott though, but it was a $300 tow.
Also, it's pronounced Preskit, or Prescut by the townies. Not Prescott like it's spelled lol.

First time I made that drive I was a student at U of A. We were coming east into Jerome and made that last turn where the view opens up on the entire valley. There was a thunderstorm to the east over the redrock cliffs. The cliffs were bright red and gold in the late day sunlight. And the clouds were black and gray, with edges tinged in gold from the sunlight. The trees were bright green in the late sun. Rain was falling in a curtain on the Redrock, and there was a brilliant double rainbow. All this lit by occasional lightning. It was literally the most spectacular and beautiful sight I have ever seen.

Just an FYI regarding the remark about Kyles in trucks at 1:37 into the video. Take in account a vehicles mass being anywhere from 500plus lbs and the larger heavy tires, and someone like myself might be a late breaker. Trucks headed down mountains having more mass and stability over lightweight aero vehicles/cars.
Where i live is truck country, and everyone and anyone is traveling about as quickly as they can

Ive driven Jerome to Prescott. Its much less exciting.
Remember it's pronounce "Preskitt"...I was scolded by some old timer when I was in college up there at Embry-Riddle University. Lol. Jerome is a cool place to visit. Lots of history. Avoid the weekends as the place gets packed, especially holiday weekends. Holy shit! The wife and i wanted to spend more time there but it was so busy with tourists the day we went...couldn't really take the whole town in.
yes! I hear this place can get extremely busy...thats part of why i like visiting places like this in the off season....Preskitt! I will remember that lol, I still goof it up
I always respond with. ." how comes it's not Skittsdale?" 😂. Best time to visit is January/ February

Where was the sketchy part of the drive? I have driven it more times than I can remember, even in the snow. Great video and yes please do one for the grand hotel.
Since I live in the Verde valley, I've driven the road hundreds of times, and visited Jerome even more often. I've never experienced it from the perspective of a drone, and Wow! Always wondered what that abandoned mining operation site looked like, and now I know. The flyover of Jerome was also very enlightening. I've watched several videos of Jerome, but none of them offered the visual and historical references that you did. Excellent research! So yes, the video of Oak Creek Canyon from Sedona to Flagstaff would be a plus!

The way you mispronounce PresCOTT grates the ears. You claim to be a Zonie, pronounce it right! The family pronounced it PresKITT to differentiate themselves from the British loyalists in the family during the revolution.

Your videos are awesome, except the largest standing ghost town in America is Bodi (Bodi, California) and when you see it in the middle of NOWHERE at 8,500 feet it will give you goosebumps!!!

Creepy Jerome story. Went up once with some friends, on the highway leaving town going to Mingus Mountain, we stopped at one of the first big U bends in the road. My friend noticed the geology there looked good for geodes so we got out to look around. We stumbled on a pair of bloody children’s underwear and a noose tied out of an extension cord not far off the road. It was extremely creepy and to this day I feel creeped out driving through there. We did not find anything else around, like a body or anything (thank God) but it was highly suspect …
that alone would be enough for me to say , "alright, its time to get back in the car" I've seen enough horror movies to know when its time to go, and that would most certainly make my skin crawl!
I made this drive in 2021 in my 25' class C motorhome. It's not bad, but I've driven many roads like this before. Watching your video, I realized I drove from Jerome to Prescott so I was mostly on the inside lane and not on the guard rail side. You are are a little more guarded (no pun intended) when you are on the guard rail side. It is a beautiful drive! Note: I used to drive a Honda Accord and thought I don't want anything bigger. Then I drove a double cab pick-up truck and said I didn't want anything bigger. I am sometimes more limited with the motorhome, but you get use to the size you are driving.

We were there and stayed in that corner room of the Connor Hotel. We never slept. It was so loud from the salon below. I hope you took the time to go to that huge museum. We went back to visit again this spring just to visit the museum and its well worth your time if you like history and want to learn about the area.

Do you calibrate the drone every time before flying it?
I haven’t seen anyone calibrate a drone like that before..
The majority of the time I do. I was always told when you move from one location to the next, you should always recalibrate. Now if I'm flying in my yard and I decide to walk one block down the street and fly there, I probably wouldn't recalibrate, just because it's so close, however if I'm flying in one area and I drive a couple miles down the road, then I would absolutely recalibrate
Passed through there yesterday. Youngest and I stayed a night at Potato Patch Campground, right across the street from the Mingus turn-off.

I've lived in Prescott for about 20 years. And that drive up the mountain on 89A is beautiful. But not fun in a car full of people. It's a recipe for car-sickness. We've done it a few times - to show visitors. We always take the less scenic way back through Clarkdale and Cottonwood on flatter and straighter roads. Excellent video and commentary. Definitely worth my time to watch. Thanks.

It sure does! Very easy to use. I've used the "follow mode" for my car, when I'm mountain biking, or just going for walks

How is Jerome a ghost town. Its crawling with people and has never not been occupied. I lived in Cottonwood right next door for many years. Jerome has so many tourists there you can't find parking! This is not the definition of a ghost town. Ive driven this road quite a few times and its not scary in the least.
Nice history on it and there is a great little museum in Jerome that had an old Chinese laundry machine in it.

My late husband George was born in the Jerome hospital in 1943 while his father worked in the mines 3 miles underground.
He returned there many times throughout his life, one time while he was in college in Flagstaff and he told me he broke into the old hospital while it was closed down before becoming the hotel. VERY spooky he said. Many years later when I met him, he was with a group of motorcyclist and we all rode from Prescott to Jerome on our bikes. The scenery is breathtaking on a motorcycle.

We did the drive from I-17 all the way to Sedona, stopping briefly in Jerome. It was in early March, so there were parts that had snow and ice, which added to the anxiety of driving on the hairpin turns 5000 ft high. My right foot starting cramping up, and that added to the anxiety, but when we made it to Jerome, I breathed a sigh of relief. The next leg to Sedona was not as hair raising, but you still had to focus completely on the road. We are from the East Coast, and absolutely love Arizona, with all of the diverse geography, we come out once or twice a year, and looking forward to our next trip in early November. I enjoy watching the videos very much.

Jerome is pretty neat. Reminds me of a one sided Bisbee. Haunted Burger is a good place for lunch and has a great patio. And the singer from Tool has a winery/tasting room there.
Most of the copper smelting was done down in the Valley at Clarksdale.
One thing I miss about living in Arizona is being able to go on drives live this. I live in SC now and it's just not the same. I'd get bored when I first moved to Prescott and would just drive.
I ate at the haunted hamburger!! had a burger "as one could guess" and beer....great view of verde valley!
Did this drive in the middle of the night the very first time I drove it lol talk about white knuckling it. So beautiful all year but especially during fall and spring. I have no idea when I'll be back up there with family no longer in the area, but I do plan on coming back. Stayed a night at the Grand Hotel there. Cool building with a self operated elevator. Not haunted, just a big old building. I love the Haunted Hamburger. Great view from their balcony. The Douglas Mansion is also really cool at the state park. I also recommend stopping into the Spirit Room for an adult beverage if that's your thing

Beautiful scenery but the drive would be a little scary for me so I'll just enjoy the drive through your videos. The drone footage is awesome. Hopefully you will do a video on the Jerome Hotel soon. That will be very interesting.

ITHINK THE BATTERY AND OVERHEATING WAS YOU HAD THE A/C ON THE WHOLE TIME , YOUR CLIMBING UP THE ROAD , THATS THE PROBLEM SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO OPEN THE WINDOWS FOR THE 88 DEGS FRESH HEAT? THE BUILDING ON THE TOP OF THE HILL IN JEROME IS NOW A HOTEL WHICH IS HAUNTED, IT USE TO BE A MENTAL BUILDING. ON THE DOOR FACING THE NORTH SIDE OF THE BUILDING WHEN MY WIFE AND I WERE THERE LEAVING THE HOTAL THERE IN THE PICTURE WAS A GHOSTSTANDING ON THE STEPS WAVING GOOD BYE TO US , ! I STILL HAVE THE PICTURE OF THE GHOST AND IT WAS TAKIEN AT 11;00AM

Went to Jerome in 2020 when covid was rampant and I had just got a liver transplant a year before so I was avoiding humans..on a building there was a plaque stating history of the owners..the original owner died in 1919 from the flu that killed many!😮😬..does history repeat itself?🤔

I have traveled that road many times in the last 70 odd years both on 2 and 4 wheels. First time in 1952 when Jerome was still a active mining town when I was 8 years old. I 17 /Black Canyon Hiway Phoenix to Flagstaff was several years into the furture. My Parents and I went to the Grand Canyon that year by way of Prescott and Wiliams Az. ,and returned by way of Flagstaff and Oak Creek canyon. From Sedona to Clarkdale thru Jerome to Prescott. From Prescott south down Yarnel hill to Wickenburg then back to Phoenix. At that time the only paved road from Phoenix north to Prescott-Flagstaff etc. was thru Wickenburg up Yarnel hill to Prescott. Black Canyon hiway was dirt from 15 mles or so from Phoenix . The road went thru Bumble Bee,Cleator,Mayer etc. to Prescott. As I recall from Mayer on to Prescott the road was paved.
