I just want to fill in a couple of details for those who are interested in building this lure: You can make the smaller model by reducing all the dimensions by 10% so just take the dimensions I give and multiply by 0.9 For the larger lure I used 1.25g of weight and #4, 3X strong treble hooks. If you use standard treble hooks use 1.75 to 2.0 grams for your ballast weight. For the smaller lure I used #6, 2X strong trebles and 1.2 grams of weight. Let me know if you have questions...
hello again E.A. can I ask where you came up with these exact calculations? I definitely going to try your formula. I've made many of these Flatfish but I never get the rapid action on them that I do with my factory models. thanks again.
The heck of it is, P rad co, the company that purchased the rights to A LOT of the classic, high-performing lures, started manufacturing Lazy Ike's again in the late nineties or early 2000's, but quickly discontinued them. [ditto for a few others; including the 'Hocus Locust'] And, the quality of their thinking SEEMS less-than-magnificent: I'd had some VERY interesting luck with some cheap, Chinese-designed lures that were made to look VERY much like a cicada ("locust"); so, I e-mailed P-co, and told them about it, told them that I had no doubt that they could make a BETTER locust-looking lure, and, reminded them that they already had a line of hard lures under the 'Rebel' name that were made to look like grasshoppers and bees [so, why not add a 'locust' to it?], and, told them that if they started making the 'H. Locust' again, I'd certainly buy it. To all of that, they responded with a SINGLE sentence: 'We discontinued the 'H. Locust' due to low sales.' I was very tempted to reply, "Ever heard-of 'ADVERTISING'? You should look-into it. It might make all the difference in the world to your company. 🙄"
My dad caught his very first large-mouth bass with a Lazy Ike, back in the early fifties. And, what little experience I have with them indicates that they're VERY effective. 👍
Just a little confused on adding 1 gram of weight. The lure I made weighs 14 grams. My calculations say that I need 32 grams total for the lure to be neutral. Am I missing something in the build because it has a diving lip. Thanks Tim
Man, what a beauty take on a classic lure. I just love old style lures, and your rendition puts a spectacular new aspect to this dependable all-star lure. Thanks Franco.
i liked your idea of putting the stickers on top of your bottles of paint- with the color of the paint on them, that way you have a quick reference to the color - so you arent always looking at the labels to determine which color it is. I think I am gonna do that to my paints tomorrow. Great Idea, its the little things that i pick up in your videos that make me appreciate them.
I used Lazy Ikes for years. These DIY lures look fantastic with their air brush paint jobs, but I always had the best results with a chrome/silver Lazy Ike, which must have looked the most like a minnow to a bass.
I'm really new but cutting the slot in the top and forming the harness for this is at some combination of the small scale and the wire I had is the most frustrating thing I've tried in this hobby so far. Took me two attempts (butchered the cut on the first one so badly that I had to restart) but I learned a lot. Great video.
Yep, definitely an inspiration. I build for fly fishing and am getting tons of ideas to incorporate your work and that of @marlingbaits into my fly tying. Many people envision these tiny little flies use to chase trout; but I chase primarily smallmouth bass, along with hybrid bass and huge bluegil. I'm not an engineer, but I am an engineering technician (or was, retired now) and that's what makes your channel so attractive to me. Thank you for the great work.
Charlie Helin spent 10 years perfecting his Flatfish - I'm sure he would argue there is little "simple" about his design. Your version has turned out beautifully, though. Great finish work.
Nice one Franco! I still fish with the Lazy Ikes and their wider wobbling, slower moving cousins the Flatfish. People don't use these lures much anymore - don't know why because the fish are still enthusiastic about them. Had to smile when I saw you cutting your wood from a piece of log - talk about raw material eh? I can relate, I have a (home made) chainsaw mill and a 1 1/2 hp re-sawing bandsaw that I convert basswood, cedar, maple and pine logs into lumber for my projects. Cheers!
Hi there, it is so nice to start my Sunday morning with your videos. I just loved this tutorial one and I will make one for me using my 3D printer. The best part is that you provide for us all the details which are important for a perfect lure build. Once again thanks for sharing.
I love the shape. I was at Hobby Lobby today and saw several chameleon paints! Can't wait to try on some of the flatbsided baits. Great instructions 👍.
Franco, Thanks for putting out such informative and entertaining videos. Could you draw out the lure design as you have it and then use a photocopier/printer to increase or decrease the size of the lure? Would this keep the angles and relative dimensions correct?
I love that lure, I’ve used this style off and on for many years with very good luck. I have only one left in my box and I’m afraid of loosing it. I’m going to try to build a few of these using cedar and this will be my 1st build. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to your next video. Great job.
great action! I think I will be attempting to build one of these! - always liked this style of lure (we referred to it as a "flat fish" (way back when :) Great content as always - thanks!
@@EngineeredAngler I have one on the printer now, there is a lot of potential with 3d printing. For good or ill, I went totally round just using the base drawing to determine the various diameters, I kept the lip the same diameter as the last round cross-section. it took a bit to figure out how to get the loft to work in fusion (since I am a beginner). What I will end up with is a printed equivalent of your carved blank.
I have just done one in 3D print using your exact measurements. I cannot for the life of me get it to swim properly. It just porpoises. Any idea what's wrong?
I printed one with ten tow points along the bib. Turns out the optimal tow point for one printed at 30%, 1mm shell, 3 perimeters with the top third of the body an air cavity is right on 22mm. Double the distance down the bib for the wooden (11mm) one EA made.
Can you please explain why & how you came up with all those measurements to make this lure? I am fascinated by this and would so enjoy knowing the secrets. I understand you are an engineer, and it probably is too in-depth to explain, however I would really appreciate the effort. I’m certain a lot of guys would. Warm regards Franco! …Cam of Ontario.
Just came across your channel , some great content there , thanks for posting . Many years ago I've got to experiment with these "banana lures" as well and I did not find them that easy to get them to work well , took me some trial and error , before I got behind their physical essentials . The biggest drawback to me is , that it is rather impossible to tinker on the diving vane , should the lure not perform well . But nevertheless these bananas are great lures , once you would have gotten behind the secrets of their construction.
I love your videos..and thank you for them.I have a question about your Lazy Ike. I noticed your line tie is higher on yours compared to the original..Why?…Thanks again ..Nate
Well, my design for this lure doesn't have the same geometry as the original. This lure has a slightly greater arc. So the line tie location was placed where the action was good but not unstable. If you move a the tie on eye down towards the nose it becomes a little more unstable. If you move it back towards the tail it becomes more stable but the action is a little tighter. Hope this helps you. Thanks for watching and thank you for the question.
Came out looking real good buddy, have you tried out the gold ink over foil yet? 👍 can you please do a video on making a 6" flat sided glide bait for muskie/pike, so we can see your process for getting the best glide action possible?
The original vintage Kautzky Lazy Ike was not weighted, (nor was the similar Helin Flatfish).., at least mine are not, so why does this one have to be? Or does it? Super cool video/tutorial though, but curious about the need for weight.
outstanding job, first flatfish type crank bait i've seen online I've been trying to get a good calculation on this type of lure. Thanks so much. Is there any way I could get a copy of your diagram so I could size it down for my use on trout? Thanks again E.A. your amazing.
Glad you enjoyed it. You can size the lure down by using a reduction factor on the dimensions. I would recommend multiplying the given dimensions by 0.9 but you can go as small as 0.75. Good luck.
So happy I found this channel. Started this build dug out the compass printed off a bunch of patterns ready to glue it to a blank then thought hmm what width blank did you use and end up with?
Great Video, will definitely make scaled up version for friend to use for Lake Trout on Lake Athabasca. Watched video 2x must have missed the width of the bait ?
That sounds good, it really lends itself to scaling up and down. I must have edited out the width dimension...I started with a wood blank that was 5/8 inch, about 1.6cm. thick. I made mine very light but as you scale up you can't scale the weight directly. I recommend you err on the side of a bit heavier...just as long as it floats. Good luck.

Great video and great simple lure. Thanks and greetings from Germany
Thank you. Cheers.
Great lure, dad always called it a FLAT FISH.. We used them for catching small mouth in the Maumee River in Ohio back in the 70s.
There was a "Flat Fish" brand lure that was a replica of a Lazy Ike.
That's funny I got one of these but never used it much. I could tell its older glad to see they work well. Might need to catch a trout on it.

The original lure seems to have the tie on eye further ahead significantly, I would say.

Thanks for putting out such informative and entertaining videos. Could you draw out the lure design as you have it and then use a photocopier/printer to increase or decrease the size of the lure? Would this keep the angles and relative dimensions correct?
Yes...the copier technique works just fine.
Really good lure. Love the paint job👍
Love your channel. Beautiful lure.
Thank you very much!
This channel is soooo underrated!! Amazing work!!
Thank you...and I humbly agree😁
Lazy Ike. Very under rated lure!

About 3 to feet on an average cast

Sure..the action will change a bit but if make it slightly head heavy it will work.

Surprisingly the two sizes seem to dive to about 4 feet on a good long cast. Thanks you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

There was also the 'Brook's Reefer'.
