This is a game changer. It's so much faster and more intuitive to make seamless patterns now, and to change elements without messing up the repeat. Thank you!
I tried it and it worked great! I designed wrapping paper and sent the order in today. This is the first of your videos I watched but you earned my subscription. Super simple and well explained.
I was hooked within the first 2 minutes of this video, thinking, 'Wow, I need to follow this guy!' By the 5-minute mark, I had already hit the subscribe button. Excellent content!
Thank you!!!! This was so easy to do. I just make a totally seemless pattern while watching your video and following along with my own graphic, and it worked flawlessly. This is fantastic and I appreciate your video. I would have never thought to do it this way, but it's just like the easiest thing ever. :-)
Colleague, thank you very much for your assistance. I had been searching for this type of information for a long time, and you resolved it in a moment. A warm greeting from the Kala Design team in Spain.
Love your tutorials, bought the full suite a week ago and with your help I am powering ahead. Just want to give a heads up - bitmap fill is now part of the vector flood fill tool in version 2.4.2
Brilliant! So easy to understand with your instructions. You should have many, many more subscribers! I'm mentioning you to a design board I'm on; they'll appreciate this too. Thanks so much!
Hi @SewGnar, thanks for the comment! I'm not sure what you mean by check the scale. Can you let me know which timestamp in the video you are referring to? Thanks!
Great Video! I'm starting to make patterns for blankets and this helped a lot. I was wondering if you might have a video on how to make a picture for a blanket. Example....a forest scene with animals, trees....Nothing repeating like a pattern. Every element is stand alone. Ive been guessing at it and using the size requirements for blankets in Printify, but the final design won't load to Printify because it's so large. They want something like 9300x12300. I size down and by time it will load the recommended DPI is below 150. Hope that made sense. If you have a video explaining this I'd love to see or maybe you could make one? :)
Hi LynnDietrich, thanks for the suggestion! I am definitely planning to do more videos about POD and designing for specific products. I'll be sure to add blankets to the list! I'm wrapping up some final videos for Affinity Designer that will probably take me a few more weeks. Then I hope to re-focus on POD designs...stay tuned!
I'm excited about this tutorial. However, I can't get my two objects to connect so I can move them together after they have been vertically aligned. Is there a tutorial I need to watch that may explain something I am missing?
Shift to select both objects to connect them. Was that an assumption that I was supposed to know or did you say it and I missed it? Again, where do I need to go to learn those assumptions as they come about in other tutorials?
Color me hardheaded, I can't follow. You're jumping all over without more information. What is bitmap, how did you get to it? Everyone is excited that you have simplified it and it does look simple, till I try to apply it as I watch.
Hi @photography8868, sorry some parts of the video were not clear. Yes, you hold SHIFT and click on multiple objects to select them at the same time. A bitmap is a graphic you can place in your document. They can be PNGs, JPGs, or even some other formats. Typically it is something you could have downloaded form the internet, bought, or created yourself. You can add them to your document by selecting File -> Place. If you'd like an overview of how Affinity Designer works, you can check out my free 2-hour beginner video here on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/8y5CDmJSt8g/v-deo.html Hope this helps! Trent
Hi @greenbeetle1, for seamless patterns, the technique is the same. Vectors can be aligned just like bitmaps. Just be sure to verify your patterns with the test process described in the video!
When I place my test into my bitmap rectangle, how am I supposed to drag within the image? No matter how much I drag, I am unable to see a seamless design. It gets bigger and smaller but rotates when I drag. Should I be holding command? Refer to around the 2:30+ mark.
Hi @PAndrew002, When using the Gradient Tool with the bitmap, on the top menu bar, is the "Extend" option set to "Wrap"? That is the only thing that I can think of without seeing what is happening. Let me know how it goes.
@@TechnicallyTrent Yes, it is set to Wrap. I have a recording if you have time to watch. I completely understand if you do not. I am sure you get requests like this all the time.
HI Trent! Thank you for this. I am wondering why my objects are cut off when I move them outside the artboard? Is that a setting issue? I only see the outline of my objects. Thanks!
Hi @IndexCard-ed7ij, the option to toggle that is called "Clip to Canvas". You can toggle it with the \ key or go to the menu View : View Mode : Clip to Canvas. I have a video on the View Modes that you may find useful: ua-cam.com/video/zK1O-I7DtqM/v-deo.html
This is really helpful but both on this one and canva one I am having issues lining up the copied image on the other side. Clicking alt will copy the image but then they move out of alignment. I must be missing a step. Is there an additional key or command you are using to both copy the image and align them?
Hi DianaDonnelly! In Affinity Designer, there are controls to align the objects in a variety of ways (Horizontally, Vertically). These controls are accessed via the icon with the 2 horizontal blue bars on the top menu bar. Also, when you select 2 or more objects, you'll see the gray bar controls on the top menu bar, too. In this video, I use these controls around 1:43. For Canva, the objects will typically snap to alignment if I remember correctly. If you hold Control, it won't snap. Are you sure you're not holding Control? I also did my video on a PC, so if you're on mobile or a tablet I'm not sure if the controls work a little differently. Hope this helps! - Trent
Super helpful, Easy to follow tutorial clearly explained, and the part where you show common problems AND how to fix them is really helpful (A lot of other tutorials omit this, so thanks) Sub Gained :)
Thank you. I like your approach and that you speak "normal" I have a hard time when the speech sounds unnatural or is slowed down sooooo it sooooounds weeeeeird. 🙂
Hi ChildOfTheKing107, I haven't tried it in AD1. It's been about a year since I've used AD1, but if I remember correctly this technique *should* work. AD1 supports magnetics and alignment. If you try it, let us know what you find out :)
Question (I think I know the answer, but just checking). To rotate objects, should we rotate them with respect to their own centre as well? I'm assuming so.
Hi @wreford07, yes, rotating both images around their center-point in the same exact way should maintain the seamless pattern. But as always, make sure to test it :)
Thanks PinkTreePortfolio, glad it helped! The elements I used in the video were PNGs. However, the technique should work with vectors, too. Just be sure to test it!
@@pinktreeportfolio1450 Yes, PNGs won't scale as well as vectors. However, usually if you download assets from a good site they will be pretty high resolution and it won't be a problem.
Finally I found this useful and easy understanding illustration of yours. If you could please provide PS for IPad for the newbie like me. Really appreciate and thank you .
For the example @1:43 your green bush can be seen off the white square in the black part. Mine just become an outline and not the actual image if I move thongs of the main white square workspace. I'm new to working with affinity and not sure why. I don't see an image but if I click on the layer it shows the outline as if it's not visible.
Hi @@Agentscrange I see what you mean now. This is the feature called "Clip To Canvas". If you hit the \ key, you will be able to toggle whether objects off of the canvas are shown. You can also enable it via the menu View -> View Mode -> Clip to Canvas. Note that if you have an artboard defined, it works a little bit differently. But by default with just 1 canvas, this is how it will work. Hope this helps! Trent
Why not just set the cursor movement to your canvas size once and just duplicate the objects on the edge, press the cursor key, and it's in the right spot? No alignment, no math, just a push of a key.
Hi @2dgameartguru, that is a cool approach! By cursor size, do you mean the setting in Settings : Tools : Nudge Distance? Would that work with a non-square canvas where you have a different width and height?
