    I work in the heating and air conditioning industry. I've literally shed tears as I pulled out a 70 year old furnace that still worked, to install a furnace that's been designed to fail in 15 years. It's evil.

      Or how about replacing 150 year old windows for vinyl windows that will only last 15 years before wearing out. The window industry was told by the government years ago that their higher efficiency claims were grossly exaggerated and yet people just believe it now without them advertising it that way.

      Two years ago, I replaced a 1978 water heater that had zero rust and worked just fine. You can't get homeowner insurance with a unit more than 7-10 years old, depending on carrier. The soul crushing and singular drive for profit has made almost every industry completely predatory at this point. Everything is designed to extract as much money from you as possible. You see it absolutely everywhere and it is driving me crazy. Great list!

    • @RM-jb2bv
      @RM-jb2bv Місяць тому

      It’s not the drive for profit. Do YOU work for free? Companies provide value in the form of goods and services. The problem is the public. We’ve become so dumbed down and conditioned that we accept shittier and shittier deals. The public sucks.

    • @dwittlief
      @dwittlief Місяць тому

      @@RM-jb2bv Yes the public is far less educated than they used to be but this tells me you don't know how things work. Corporations are sharks and know exactly how to extract every dollar possible out of us. They study us and know you better than you know yourself. They hire data scientists to study you, not themselves and they know with better accuracy if you're going out this Saturday than you do. For instance, Allstate studied their customers and other companies customers so well, that they knew which group was not likely to shop around for other car insurance so they charged that group of customers $1500/yr more. They all use algorithms to take advantage of us in a predatory way as a normal course of operation and it's become normalized when it should be criminal.

    Freezers: I used to deliver appliances for Sears. When we delivered them we had to remove the old ones. It was part of the deal. I removed 50 year old freezers, International Harvester comes to mind, that still worked but people wanted new ones. I laughed when you said, "old appliances, from the 80's...." LOL. I delivered those. They weren't the good ones. The ones from the 50's and 60's were. Remember "The Maytag Repairman"? There used to be commercials about an old guy that never worked because Maytag appliances were too good. It was true. Many of the oldest washers I replaced were Maytags and they still worked and were sold after they were replaced with a new matching set. That new matching set needed to be repaired while the old Maytag was still working in someone else's basement.
    The answer? I don't know, but the planet is becoming a garbage dump. That is a problem we are all going to have to face, but the super rich, the ones making all this happen, will be the last to be effected.

    • @JamieM470
      @JamieM470 8 місяців тому

      And the great irony is that the super rich are the ones lecturing us & manipulating politicians in to voting for the Sustainability Agenda.
      If they want smaller carbon footprints, then the things we buy should last a very long time. And these individuals own, or at least own major stock in, the corporations that are manufacturing garbage products.
      The largest carbon footprint of a product is manufacturing. The manufacturing process itself & the transportation (huge!). The super rich are insuring that the manufacturing of garbage products is excessive & constant. They are the very ones who are creating unsustainability through planned obsolescence.

      My mother had an upright freezer that was kept in the barn when we lived on the acreage. Worked great. It was bought in the early 50s.
      City expanded, and we were then living in the city. My mother moved the freezer into the basement, and after some time, she was having trouble with it. The repair guy came out, cleaned the mouse poop out of the innards, and it was back up and running. The freezer was left in that house. For all I know, it's still running.

      What I find bizarre is the disconnect of some of my friends who are reciting the _"global warming"_ news that they hear, and yet they are willing to rip out their completely functional kitchens to be replaced by *new and shiny* particle board cabinets... Their old cabinets will likely end up in a landfill along with their appliances, and they do not consider that, or the waste that is involved by he factories and suppliers who make, finish and ship their *new and shiny* particle board cabinets and silver appliances. Cognitive dissonance. 🙄

      Interestingly..I attended a legal conference several years back and one of the topics was about setting up a charity. By law (and it could vary by state, but I doubt it), when you set it up you can have employees and you can be an employee. Salaries are allowed to employees. As long as a certain percent of all collected goes to the actual cause. That percent is really low. As I recall, it was like 5 or 7%. Crazy. All those big charities like ASPCA, Humane society of America, etc. you can find their annual tax returns online and see how much they spent on everything from those cushy 6 figure salaries, to printing, advertising, whatever. And they show what % was left for the cause.

Community, friendship and mental & spiritual stimulation are priceless and pay rich dividends in continued health and vitality and this is proven by statics! So, whether you can prove God or not, the money people give or donate to a religious institution is well spent. Unfortunately, some are money hungry and do not see beyond the $ signs.

    I never understood how people pay so much for food (restaurant) delivery apps. If you need your food delivered why not just have groceries delivered from the grocery store? As someone who has a disability that causes severe pain, weakness and fatigue I understand it can be difficult to cook but there are simple meals such as tv dinners that just need to be microwaved, pot pies that you just stick in the oven, crock pot meals where you just dump in a few ingredients, etc. If you have groceries delivered you pay one delivery fee/tip for meals that last a week or so rather than a delivery fee and tip per meal. But it's not just the delivery fees, I feel that going out to eat these days in general is a scam. Quality has gone down immensely. The food is never worth the cost and I always regret it wishing I had just made something at home.

      I am of the faith too. Religion has twisted what tithing really means. It doesn't have anything to do with giving money to a church. And these wealthy celebrity pulpit pimps? They're the ones Jesus warned us about. False teachers.
      Tithing is part of Old Testament laws to support the temple system; the priesthood...because they were not given any land, so they had no means to support themselves. We are not required to tithe under the New Testament. Giving is up to the individual. A lot of people cannot afford to give--they are struggling & should probably be the beneficiaries of giving, and guilting them in to giving money they cannot afford to give is just so wrong.

    • @limewater
      @limewater 8 місяців тому +8

      @@aaronwaddington1208 If you are specifically speaking about the Bible, then the tithe was explicitly established similar to a tax specifically to support the priests of the tribe of Levi, who were set aside to serve the L^rd and did not get share of the land like the other tribes. See Leviticus 27 and Numbers 18.
      I don't see scriptural mention of mowing grass, apart from, perhaps, a harvest where a tenth of the clipping are set aside. Nor do I see any mention of slinging cans at people. There is some stoning, though.
      In reality it does take money to maintain a staff and building and serve G^d and the community, assuming the church in question is doing those things.

It is a life long journey/struggle that helps you to evolve as a person, not to get into the good graces of the established authority in hopes of a reward. Also, at its core, spirituality teaches that we are all one; separateness is just an illusion. So no, I do not use it to indicate that I am different, only that I do not wish to participate in something that I do not feel moves me along my path. I normally never even mention it, but it seemed germane to the topic as background information for the rest of my comment. Have a wonderful day.

      @homeschoolwithjackandmama But the way you explain it, to me, it's just you living your life just like everyone else. You treating everyone equally doesn't equate you to being spiritual. It just means you are a decent person. There is nothing spiritual to me it's just basic common sense. That's why I said when someone says, " ooh I do not believe in any religion, but I am spiritual," they are actually trying to say they are better or special than other people. And to me, it's just silly and doesn't make sense at all. It's just some word salad people have mastered to sound intelligent , unique, and "not like other people"

    Tithing is not something I've EVER understood. Does no one even ask the question as to what they are using the money for? Why is it okay for the money to be automatically direct debited from each person's paycheques? How many people are being forced by their spouses or family or friends to tithe? Absolute insanity.

Same w women's if possible you can find Goodyear welted leather soled cowboy boots. For women in the more feminine shoe buy only 100% leather uppers and leather soles. You will pay considerably more for them but they will last you decades. If they go out of fashion don't throw them away they will come back in style and you will find that you will enjoy wearing top quality shoes and boots. This is how you eliminate planed obsolescence w shoes. It's how our ancestors did it and it still works today because you can have them resoled and wear them time and again and enjoy ultimate comfort at the same time.

    Love your work Nicole! I agree with everything you said in this video. It is important that these scams are brought out into the light. Change starts with awareness, although I suspect things have gone too far and there is too much money and power involved for that to happen now. I follow another frugal minimalist who has said that we are at a crossroads where we have to make a choice between outsourcing everything and becoming slaves at the mercy of those with money and power, or to learn to do things for ourselves to maintain our independence and options. These days people outsource everything: buying groceries, cooking meals, minding children and pets, servicing cars, renovating homes, cleaning, making clothes, and maintaining gardens etc. This ties us into a vicious cycle of needing to work more and to take on larger debt to be able to afford it all which makes us feel we need to outsource more just to cope with it all.

    As an electrical engineer I can attest that the obsolescence problem does exist in consumer electronics, but possibly in not as "planned" a way as you might suppose. For example, several years ago a large electronics vendor set up a competition with a number of design houses for the same audio product, from which the winner was the one with the lowest cost to manufacture but met their specifications. One of these design houses was my client, and we had a problem that was easily solved with a 50 cent component but could also be solved with lower reliability with a 5 cent part. When I pointed out that the cheaper part would probably only last a year or two with heavy usage, my client pointed out that they likely wouldn't win the competition with the better part, and to my dismay he said that the failure doesn't matter in the sense that the specification only applies when the device is purchased. But I'd also think the free market would correct this to some degree since once a vendor is tagged as having poor quality it gives a competitor leverage to take away their market, albeit with a higher cost product. So a part of the problem is with us seeking out the cheapest item.
    Also, I'd just chime in that I became a Christian at about your age partly because of both science and history. But sadly yes, Christ made a big deal about "wolves dressed in sheep's clothing" so one has to be very careful. I generally tell people to first read the Bible and not listen to those who might have some ulterior motive, the logic being that without having that reference they have no means of judging the validity of the information they're getting. I see it much like any other area of study.

Uber Eats and Doordash was my saving grace, and I tipped well because I've also done delivery back when it paid better.
    That said, most drivers don't see the true cost per mile for their vehicle or do the math before taking small orders at large distances, so the delivery company wins through exploitation.

    Years ago in Seattle I got frustrated with the price of ink. I noticed that they were selling a Lexmark (Office Depot, I think) printer for less than the cost of the cartridges, and the printer came with cartridges. So I bought it, thinking that it couldn't be as stupid as I thought, but no - I literally got two cartridges and a printer for less than the cost of just two cartridges. I only did it once, since I'm aware of how toxic electronics are in landfills. But that, and the fact that cartridges will go dry so you have to use them up, and the whole scam that you can't print in black and white if the color cartridge goes dry, have prompted my to say fuck it. If I've got stuff to print I'll put it on a thumb drive and take it to the print shop. WAY cheaper and way less hassles. Printers are a scam I'm done with.
    And oh yeah...you need to find Jesus. Which should be easy, because from what I've heard he's literally everywhere. Like the world's most accomplished stalker.

    Hey Nicole, long time subscriber here, and this is another great list, well done.
    Here's an idea for your next normalized scams video: I am surprised TIPPING CULTURE in the food & service industry hasn't yet made your list, as it seems like one of the biggest scams we all accept as normal.
    I mean specifically the whole forcing, shaming, pressuring system.
    How it started in the great depression in the US because patrons felt pity for business owners who couldn't afford to pay their employees, to the frenzy it's devolved into these days - card machines showing minimum 18%, 20%, or 22% tip options, and the sneaky tactic that those percentages are actually tacked onto the total of your bill PLUS tax. So essentially we are tipping on the tax the restaurants pay to the government ON TOP of the amount for the meal/service. I don't think most people are aware of this.
    And before I hear some commenters' favourite counter-argument "WeLl If YoU cAn'T aFfOrD tO tIp, DoN't EaT oUt ThEn" - my answer would be "if you can't afford to pay your employees, don't hire them". Let's not distract from the fact that this whole system is a SCAM that is dependending on us feeling guilty and pressured and forced to fork out around 30% ON TOP of the price of the meal/service itself in order to pay people fair wages. It's a fucking S-C-A-M.
    Another related scam is how here in North America, taxes are largely not included in the ticket price. Just how insidious and impactful this is, I think is underrated. As someone who has lived in countries where taxes are usually included in the price.
    But that's enough ranting for one day. :)
    Thanks for reading this far, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.
