- Here in this video you would learn how to test and repair a bike or motorcycle cdi unit using a multi meter. You can repair a cdi unit very easily if you know the basic electronics component testing and analysis. CDI unists are very common now a days on motorcyle. If a cdi goes bad on a motorcycle or any small gas engine, the engine refuse to start or run. CDI stands for capacitor discharge ignition system. CDI boxes have different shapes and different number and color coding of wires. But the basic principle for a cdi to work is the same. They all have a capacitor inside which is charged and then discharged in the ignition coil to produce spark for the engine to start and run. It is very important to know and properly test the cdi box before replacing it in case if the bike is not starting.

Best that you understood it well and realized the truth. Such voltage you can measure usig a multimet at some 750v or 1000v ac range preferably an analogue multimeter for the subject job. 1N4007 are the best diodes you can use everywhere.
Really wish you could have shown the diode removal and replace!!! Just to see and learn how and what you do.

sir, informative vid ... one question, i connected battery with reverse polarity . Thereafter, no ignition, everything dead when i connected battery the correct way. Normally, the battery has a main fuse located near battery but previous owner was using roadside mechanic who bypassed fuse. So, what component would be affected by the reverse polarity connection? its a 2018, suzuki gixxer, carb model. Many thanks.

Hello i have a source coil and it is potted together with the cdi box, i am in the process of stripping everything down and will need to repair the cdi box and rewind the source coil then rewire everything the problem is i dont know how it was wired as i had to disassemble it, it is for an echo twin cylinder chainsaw, have you ever repaired a unit like this
No, I never get a chance. You can do it by diassembing carefully the older and do new the same way.

This is single phase, I believe about all of them test the same, if yours is single phase this applies.
If it's 3 phase however, the testing is different.
how does the CDI circuit board advance the timing with increasing rpm?
by using a throttle position sensor, which is just a magnet attached to the throttle and it activates a reed switch when you open the throttle completely

Hello, nice video. I opened a cdi unit just like this. I see a 14pin chip inside. Sx195 190141. Maybe an IC. I searceh the internet and i is nowhere to be found. Do you have any idea what this is or an name of code of the same alternative ? Thanx
Such are special code number chips. Sometimes they could be programmable microcontrollers with specially written firmware and uncommon number code on them. Unfortunately they aren't easily available.

Thanks. Ac units are small in size and DC cdi units are usually big 8n size. The wiring configuration tells you whether the system uses AC or DC cdi. In AC system the armature coil directly feeds the cdi. In DC cdi system, the battery feeds 12v DC to CDi unit through ignition switch.

No. It's just a power flow circuit. If it has a built in speed limiter, the wire can be disconnected or cut.

They are very commonly available and low cost diodes 1N4007. I had taken them from an old board. These diodes are there in almost all 230v operated boards.

CDI is not controlling motor speed. Instead CDI is following speed and providing spark on all speed to the engine. Engine speed is controlled through quantity of air fuel.

There is no rpm limiter circuit on these cdis. Limit comes due to the whole design of the system. Next in some video I will provide details about DC CDI. DC CDI have no such limits. But it needs a battery on the vehicle to make it working.
LearningZone i have a Hyosung sf50 Scooter with an AC cdi That is Limited to 7000 rpm. It has the same shape and connectors as the cdi shown in your video. Best regards
You replaced two surface mount diodes with lead type for thru hole circuit board design. In your repair the diodes are offset from conductive pads on circuit board. This is not a reliable fix as the diodes have 3x mass and are not properly supported by thru holes from vibration on vertical plane axis. They are also susceptible to thermal expansion stresses from the leads. Even with potting reapplied this is temporary fix at best. CDIs are relatively inexpensive and there are no guarantees the other diode that was not replaced may fail shortly afterward.

Hello, it's really interesting video, thank you. I have question. can i used cdi from different motorcycles or they have some differences? For example cdi on Honda transalp and Honda dio look at same, can i swap it?
If they are same in shape and design, you can simply swap them as they are pin to pin compatible.
If they have little change in shape and model number, you can replace the CDI with minor wiring changes.
Which bike cdi is this?
This for for very common Honda CD70 and CG125 and it's varients and copies.

I already replied you from my other channel. You can check it. Anyhow you can put any mosfet like 13N60, 9N60 or 7N60. These are very common mosfets and you can buy any one of the very cheap. But if mosfet went bad sure you would replace smps ic uc3842 also and check for other bad burned components like resistors, capacitors and diodes.

I have another video on my channel where I explained it's circuit diagram and connections but better to purchase a cdi unit than make one. They are cheap and works well.
I have a bad CDI that started and idles but when you gave it gas to move forward it would cut out like a reverse override switch, is how it acted, just like atvs that have the override buttons for reverse, so hen you put it in drive and give it gas to move it sounded the same as if you was in reverse with override, so CDI can start and idle but give it gas to go it cut out and that was the CDI as well, thanks for the videos, I wish I was a smart as you are, but hey according to the leftist, we can make everybody the same through socialism and communism, so I guess there's hope that some how magically the Dems can legislate me being as smart as you lol, how smart humans can be to be so dumb at the same time, ever learning but never coming to the knowledge of the truth
