There is not one single bar of music ever composed by Beethoven that could even remotely be described as "trivial". And this performance by Rudolf Serkin is a testament to that fact.
One of the greatest pianists and one terrific human being, too. What a legacy he left all of us. Thank you for posting this remarkable video, a real gift to ones like myself who needed a refresher on Maestro Serkin's supreme artistry and presence.
When I was a child, Serkin was the touring pianist I heard more than any other. I am so thankful for being able to hear him and the lofty standard he always played on. Playing like this at age 84 is a great blessing.
Mr Serkin in great form, and thoroughly engrossed in his work, Wonderful how we can see and hear such a performance in such detail. I have watched this over and over.
Schubert also wrote a genius triptych of last Sonatas. But the master is the master… thank you Ludwig, and thank you Mr. Serkin. It’s worth to be alive only for this
For the general public, perhaps, but not among real musicians. He wasn’t flamboyant like Rubenstein or a spectacular virtuoso like Horowitz, and didn’t play much Chopin or Liszt, but when it came to the classical Viennese music, he was tops.
I'm so grateful the whole concert has been uploaded uninterrupted...my favourite late Beethoven pianist...he doesn't bother with all the formalities but instead faces each sonata head on.
I've seen "the best recording of XX ever" a lot on other occasions, feeling it cliche until now I've never written one, but on this live performance of Beethoven's 3 last sonatas by Serkin, to me, I've at last found my chance to declare it the best, and confident that a lot of others will agree with me.
strong rh at the end of each, ringing out the melody to take it home, esp rh 5 (pinky) --- not always the case, oddly could be even more of that, though, esp 111
Without question, the most beautiful performance of these 3 sonatas. Serkin understood Beethoven’s language and intentions. They both left this world and now we are left alone.
Genuinely food for the soul ! It was the merit of Serkin for sure, I dare say so because you simply couldn't get the same beauty and insight from other pianists, old or young. I think only the Arietta of op.111 by Arrau in the 50's is comparable or on the same par.
I love how Serkin removes any hint of sentimentality from his playing and removes all the ogling and rubatos that seem to be in fashion. This is playing on another level.
14:54 I do not really share his tempo or his intonations, but the man is in love with this music. He adores it, this is really pure love, and it saves everything.
He is one of my favorite pianists in the Austro/German repertoire. I am very fortunate to have heard him perform Beethoven's E-flat Piano Concerto in Chicago in the mid-1980s.
You all prolly dont give a damn but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost my login password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me
Thank you, Vladivostok 1969, for the upload. Wonderful. Mr Serkin was a mentor to András Schiff, and I hear Serkin often in the musicianship and pianism of Sir András. I don’t think it is my imagination!
Matthew Steele : Thank you for replying. I feel the same! Have just bought his two recently released DVDs of Well-Tempered Clavier, so I can listen and watch to my heart’s content.
Oudtshoornify I just received those last week also. Schiff is just phenomenal. His playing also is centered towards the composer and not the pianist’s ego. When people listen to Gould they sometimes focus on Gould and not Bach, the composer.
@@Steele8771 : I agree. Gould was a magnet for personal attention - young, attractive and definitely a showman, with that rickety chair and all the singing. And of course his recordings were edited so much by him that they eventually became bits and pieces spliced together. The results were phenomenal, but not quite honest.
Intimate and revelatory; dare I say precursor Romantic in its searchingness. It shows us: “all art aspires to the constant condition of music.” Directly imbibbed: “I ask only that you listen!”
Brilliant, a steadier tempo than most in the opening Movt of opus 111 but just as dramatic and Beethoven’s music isn’t all about speed, the music comes first and foremost
🤣 Saludos.

haha I knew I had owned this recording before on DG - it has some spectacular mistakes in the Arietta of Op 111 which i recognise here - Igor Levit is the man to hear in that sonata, it's as good as the old Pollini recording from the 70s

The 30th is such a beautiful piece that even the pianist is reduced to tears by the end.

Mr Serkin in great form, and thoroughly engrossed in his work, Wonderful how we can see and hear such a performance in such detail. I have watched this over and over.
I am watching for a second time. Will continue watching again and again, probably for a couple of years
Unbelievable master of Beethoven and incredible that at 83 years of age the sound of the master is still wunderlich.
84, I think
My God. The fidelity of this recording is superb. How do we thank Serkin?
Extraordinary performances of the late Beethoven sonatas by this great pianist Rudolf Serkin!!
I love this generation of pianists no silly distracting movements.

Indeed, to be alive for this is a privilege
I love his tempos! It's not rushed and you can actually listen to the music. The fugue of No. 31 is wonderful.
I heard him play the same program in Boston that year. One of the best concerts I've attended.
Great upload. Serkin is possibly the least known/most underrated of the great classical pianists. This live performance is sublime.
For the general public, perhaps, but not among real musicians. He wasn’t flamboyant like Rubenstein or a spectacular virtuoso like Horowitz, and didn’t play much Chopin or Liszt, but when it came to the classical Viennese music, he was tops.

too bad they decided to interrupt after you had the pleasure of seeing it pristine.
Beethoven seems to be putting his hands on Serkin's shoulders! Impressed itself!
Has always been my favorite interpretation. Serkin is sublime.

Yep, love that finale of Op. 109 and the first mvt of Op. 111
absolutely!! the same for me
You might v much enjoy the Kovacevich (then Bishop) first round, from the 1960s

@@wolfgangklofat594 no big deal, it’s only my subjective feeling on a particular performance :-)
When I heard that, I thought of a blizzard.
Standing in the middle of a never-ending blizzard
scrub
No coat or umbrella
neither light nor darkness
once started
I have work to do until I die
Tell me
When I read the old diary, I think of everything
didn't like to read
because it is heavy
'cause I can't start
I don't want to stop going deep
never seen eternity
forever beautiful and forever believing
to love forever
It's scary
All diaries become old diaries
told the little man
A person who grew up without guidance
You have to be your own guide.
I've never done it
after saying
I'll try
nobody
saw little people
The only thing to write and the only thing to write
all remain
then like that
I am your eternal guide

Considering there are 7 billion here, that's a bit dramatic, to say the least.
@@needtoknowbasis3499not another Beethoven. Not another Serkin.
La sua 110 è stata ed è ancora il mio faro. Inarrivabile. Grazie, Maestro Serkin! 🌹
Some 25 years ago, I stumbled across a double CD of Rudolf Serkin's 3 last Beethoven sonatas. To this day, I regard them as unsurpassed
I saw him in 1987 in Munich playing these 3 Sonatas and it was so touching ❤️ thanks for posting this, so inspiring & uplifting 🙏
And I attended his Miami concert around that time, again the same program. Fantastic.
Just looking ti heaven and saying ❤

If Beethoven said Innigsten, then why play it in such a declamatory way?
Whether you like his style or not, that's Serkin style.
I can always teach you how to speak to men.
It's obvious that it's very hard for him to overcome the technical difficulties of these sonatas at that age
