The sound design in Star Citizen is some of the absolute best in the industry with the best examples of it's sound design coming from the unique sounds ship's play as they fly past the player. In the industry we call these sounds 'one-shots' as they play a single sound file after a certain condition is met to trigger the sound.
This video contains all current flyable ships in 3.17 with a surprise thrown in. Please note that the sounds are not 100% reproducible because the trigger conditions for each individual sound changes depending on the situation. For example, different sounds play when the ship is flying slower, faster, in space, in formation etc.
A few more caveats, I know some people will ask about the 350r. In our testing it sounded identical to the base 300i despite having a different engine. Also, no Idris or Bengal. The Bengal had zero sounds this Invictus and the Idris flew too slow by the AI to properly trigger any flyby one shots. Also no F7A since it is very tricky to snag those.
Special thanks to the crew of the Forgotten Heralds for helping me put this one together, RV2 boys o7

This took some time to put together, but it was well worth the effort. What was your favorite sound out of all of them? What do you think was the worst? My favorite is the 400i and my least favorite was probably the Hercules.
Also, I realize the size categorization is not exactly accurate for example the Valkyrie being classified as small and Eclipse being classified as medium. I was going off a list category online and after I rendered I realize that said list seems to be way off. I think the list is out of date after the recent updates to the ship metric CIG post. Just enjoy the sounds alright? XD
See you all in the next one o7
Normally, I think my favorite is the Banu Defender‘s afterburner sound but that wasn‘t really audible in here for some reason. Within the video, my favorite sound was that of the MOLE with the 400i being a close second. I was disappointed by the Reclaimer :)
Thanks for putting this together, it‘s mind boggling that you can almost determine manufacturer and hull by the sound alone!
Slight correction in timetable:
21:18 Caterpillar
21:51 Constellation
Carrack Section includes the Drake Caterpillar. Thought you'd like to edit the time stamps and such.
@@lystic9392 Corrected, thanks for the heads up!
Khartu-al and Talon are my favourites. The buccaneer was surprisingly bland considering how good it sounded in older versions.
The amount of work, and im sure the countless bugs and crashes it took to do this. Thank you!
Khartu Al, Herald, Mantis QED snare, Talon, 400i, 600i, Caterpillar, Constellation all sound awesome.
Least favorites are large ships with tiny to nothing sound signatures. Honestly, big ships need more noise.
Hammerhead? Reclaimer? C2?
GREAT VIDEO FELLAS!!!
(what did I hit? Uhh... ground)
I loved the hammerhead! If you go back and listen to it and the 890J, you'll notice they have a sound element in common at the tail end which makes it sound like it's wading through water!
@@BornAgainstAll Big ships fly much slower so less sound.
@@stephenwillis744 but big ships have much much bigger engines to drive them! To hold the mass in the air you need way more thrust!
Just love how the ship actually pull up dust and disturb the "fog" in some places...the details
This is that one thing we didn't know we wanted. Thank you!
thank you for making this, was literally searching for one of these last week xoxo
Herald sounds like it is breaking the sound barrier when passing
i wish they would make it like 10-20% faster ingame. it would fit the design at type of ship
That Anvil sound design! Love their sound design along with the Khartu-Al, Blade/Glaive, and Vanguard!
Pretty amusing bloopers too, hahaha.
Really appreciate the amount of work you had to put in! Thanks for the vid
God thx u, 15 minutes on UA-cam for find once video like THIS
Thanks you so much
I was JUST thinking to myself "I wonder if there's a video showcasing all of the ship fly-by sounds" AND HERE IT IS. Thanks!
Cool video ~ enjoyed the outtakes. I want to hear sonic booms in atmosphere! That'd be so cool.
Guys this was stupendous. Thanks for putting this together!
The ships in space are beautiful but sometimes it's better to admire them from the ground, great sounds.
Awesome
Conny you go my boy so proud of you baby!
Thanks for the hard work ^^
Though I was disappointed by the Buccaneer, it used to have a high pitched shriek as it passed in earlier patches, like a Velociraptor, now its a deep grumble. Oh well ^^
Thank you for making this!
omg its perfet done ! thanks for your awesome work ! only disturbing thing is a lot of small ships sounds relatively too much identical...hope CIG change something on that in the future !
but your video is really well done ! congrats for that and i subscribed to your channel for that because i discover your channel just today !
Really well done. Great watch - have to mirror other comments, I do think the larger ships need substantially more oomph tbh...
They should let loud ship sounds do tier three or tier two hearing damage if unprotected.
wuuuuuf defender killin it :D nice vid!
I love this high pitched sounding like a turbo at the 300i. It's the only one with this.
As much as I love some of these sounds, a lot of them don't have the PUNCH that they should have
Excellent video!
This is really underwhelming. I don't mean the video itself, the video is made beautifully and I respect you for taking the time. But the sounds are really underwhelming- I'd love for CIG to just make them super loud, almost to the point my ears start to bleed, I wanna feel the power of each engine!!!c Anyway, great work :)
now THIS is top tier sound design.
Realy Good Video! I know, how much Time you invested in this Video!
I love how the sand particles part when the craft flys low enough. Hopefully this is also seen when oceans are implemented. I wish the local fauna would be swayed by the craft parting wind.
great job! love it :)
when you want to volume boost on the 600i but you're already at max volume
Cool compilation, though would like to see improvements to the sound and have them be further spatially accurate and impactful-sounding. (applies to much of the audio in the game however)
They're not gonna emulate speed of sound. There are some audio fixes coming in though. They had a panel on their new audio tool at CitizenCon last year.
Freaking love the sound design of the ships in this game.
It's strange though. I was on a stream just a few days ago doing flyby on my Andromeda and it sounded slightly different. The flutter of the turbo was more pronounced on approach and the boom as deeper along with the warble was also more pronounced. Still, I'm really happy with how the constellation series sounds.
Great content, thank you.
the blade literally rawrs at you
This would be a good way for ground troops to learn to identify what ships are flying overhead. There are some similarities among ships in each manufacturer. If(When?) you redo it I suggest you group the ships by manufacturer instead of by size. Also, to my first point it would be good if the fly-bys are done at different altitudes. For example, danger close, down in the valley below, 100m, 500m, 1000m, 5000m, 10000m (or whatever the max height is you can hear it from). Also, take off and landing for dropships or other medium large ships that might land for combat purposes, such as a M2 dropping off tanks or a Constellation dropping off a rover.
dang it your my hero man.
Finally. Thanns
You are fkng kidding me this is amazin
Cool Vid!!
If I wasn’t already decided on my first few ships
I would use this video to decided my ships lol
You know it's funny. The only reason I haven't CCU'd my Mustang Beta is because it's so damn fun to fly in atmo at low altitudes. With Tobii Eye/Head tracker the views out the cockpit are amazing down that low.
Edit: Also meant to mention the MSR sounds different in Crusader atmo. Have someone go vertical above you in one at Orison and go full Speed control and throttle. Nearly sounds like a Falcon 9 lifting off with that cracking noise. It's very subtle but its there.
Curious why u recorded on a windy noisy planet like Hurston, it messes up the flyby of some ships
The loud sounds are the sound of the ship's thrusters not the dust storms. Atmospheric weather sounds get their volume ducked down when a ship gets close to the listener in order to draw the listener's focus toward the flyby sounds.
Also, we did this on Hurston because every one my videos always gets hit with the "lmao sounds in space" comments so we did it this way instead.
Yes. I too think CIG needs to tune down the air noise. It muffles the uniqueness of each ship. It seems to me the have the same jet sound over all the vehicles. And it needs turned down or turned off. I want more Sci fi in this aspect and less reality.
@@sajkachris I disagree. wind noise and atmosphere is perfect as it is. You're on a different planet/moon this is not Earth so it's acceptable to be completely different/uncomfortable compared to what we as a humans have evolved to be comfortable with.
R.I.P for all the Heros that dying to make this Video, we will never forget you
zoom zoom zoom
While still cool, they sounds way more "conservative" than old style of flyby sounds.
Buccaneer for example, the flyby video from 3 ~ 4 years ago are super memorable till this day.
Those sounds still play on some ships. Currently, the speed of the ship dictates the types of sounds the game picks so sometimes it just picks samey sounds, other times it picks some cool ones that really pop.
Amazing amount of effort here, nice work.
Are these at cruise or full acceleration with burners on?
Nice work
This really is the new way to develop games… sadly we are a bunch of dopamine junkies that want a new title release instead of quality. But then dread the fact we got an unfinished game. Good on you star citizen and much respec ✊🏼
Ugh it's so infuriating with how well they do visuals comparatively to the audio, the games sound has gone down hill drastically over the past 2-3 years, I'm hoping it's just all placeholder temp audio to get star citizen in a functional state but man ships have no life to them, sure certain ships have sprinkles of spice here and there but it's outright boring.
Part of the problem is that this was filmed on a stormy planet which I think adds alot of white noise.
@@bsquaredbundles Nope, that loud noise is not dust storms, that is how ships sound like in atmosphere they have that loud white noise like sound which supposed to be the thrusters at a distance. imo the mix balance has the thruster sounds way too loud which brings down the experience a bit.
@@bsquaredbundles Like what whiskey said, that is the baseline ship engine sound, it's awful, so many in the comments here are also misinterpreting what is going on with the sound, the ambient is negligible in the video, it's just how dull and boring the games audio is at the moment.
I think the audio distance is set so it's just enough for the 3rd person camera of the player to hear it. And that the "something something" effect is also lacking in loudness, depth, and richness.
they've gotta steal some of the sound designers from Elite Dangerous
Great effort man. Must've required alotta work.
But honestly the ships used to sound better now they all sound kinda similar and very underwhelming sadly. Ever had a low fly by from a jet in real life? That feeling you get? Even with headphones i barely felt it. They all sounded really similar, that whomp at the end that's all.
So close too getting one of the Hercules variants, the M2, once I get that not flying anything else lol
The Aurora sounds like a starwars Snowspeeder!
I was low key hoping a stolen Idris NPC as the last fly over. Especially since they stole a npc F8.
Not bad, but SC need to work more on engine sounds, explosions. Needs to feel more powerful I think.
If I may, check out the sound of the I350R...It is different form the standard 300..
But this was AWESOME...
We tried it with the 350r but it sounded identical to the base 300 in our testing. We chocked it up to a bug at the time and moved on.
Am i the only one that feels like the flyover sounds are delayed by 0.5 to 1 sec?
The immediate crossover seems to happen AFTER it's already behind you, not when its directly above as irl.
Was your camera zoomed in so it wasnt actually directly above when it went out of frame, or is this an ingame issue too?
Might also be part of the speed the ship are tareling at as well. I know some ships can travel faster than 300m/s a second and a lot of them looked like they where doing above 600. Just sucks that we don't have sonic booms in game yet. but do have sound travel delay.
Doppler effect
My favorites would be Aurora, Mustang, Mantis QED, Lightning, Hornet, Buccaneer, Freelancer(Yes, I do like the flyby of Freelancer) and Hull A. I don't hate any of them
Niceeee
If I can recommend without seeming rude, maybe if you make another flyby video do it on a moon that doesn't have really loud wind and sorms
this is awesome! and just gotta ask, where abouts on hurston are the green bits? I dont remember hurston being so nice.
Around the Ocean and the poles are green as well. Hurston Dynamics hasn't trashed the whole planet... yet.
@@SternLX yeah lol, thanks
did they put the old sound back? i heard terada complaining that cig changed engine sound effet and that flyby where less good than before some patch ago
Some of these sounds are a bit 'samey' and a lot of them are rather weak imo - i've been inside craters on moons that have stronger sounding winds that have always made me look up in the sky wondering if theres a ship inbound.
While i personally probably wouldnt be able to tell you what ship was flying overhead from these sounds, there are a few like the Vanduul Scythe or Nomad that i'd be able to say 'yep, that was a ship and not a stiff breeze' lol
Maybe if they lowered the White Noise sound and raise the sound effects of the engine it would sound a lot better
todas se escuchan casi igual y seguramente es porque hicieron el flyby con afterburner, creo que si solo grabas cuando las naves van en su velocidad normal se escuchan mejor la diferencia en sus motores
Now from the cockpit and 3rd person view.
Wait how on Hurston did you get an F8 Lightning? What am I missing here?
you can steal them from NPCs
@@gereon2508 crazy, i had no idea
@@gereon2508 how?
Great video, i guess the sound change when you do some maneuvers i don't remember ship sounds to be that much not different.
What is the music name at the end ?
Yeah, ship sounds changed depending on speed distance etc. Ending music is my own. It's an unreleased track that I've been teasing for an upcoming EP release.
@@HybridVAudio woaw, this music is amazing, i'll wait until you release it then , great job !
600i sounds like my stomach growling
Imo they should add more power to the thrusters visually and also make the audio a bit more…powerful I guess
I would love to know how you guys got the flyable lightning in 3.17
how tha F did u get to fly a lightning? O_o did u steal it at invictus week?
One more reason why the M50 is the best ship
The audio in Star Citizen needs work from proven sound design engineers who have worked on projects with great sound like Elite Dangerous! The contrast between the games visual graphics and audio is frustrating. Everything looks great visually but its not supported by the audio department and continues to flop.
Engines start up and shut down sounds play on short clips while accelerating and terminate instantly at speed restrictions. Retro thrusters start up and shut down rather than having layered sounds to gradually increase rpm from idle to high output then back down to idle while maintaining constant engine noise and balancing at idle. Nearly every flyby has the same sound. They go overboard using organic sounds for mechanical systems like landing gear, hydraulics, and quantum drives as well. One of the most annoying sounds to date has got to be driving the Drake Mule with its engine constantly starting and stopping.
The flight experience could be 100% better if sound effects and ranges matched the speed and senerios you were experiencing. Layered sounds and mechanical humming gives alot of feedback when you're actually flying an airplane. I think poor sound design is why the ships feel so slow even though they are actualy moving fast. The sounds quality does not matching the experience at all.
There is massive potential to make ships systems sound and feel alive with longer start up sequences, mechanical feed back, radio traffic, ATC transmissions, and complex layering but they aren't utilizing any of that potential at all.
27:30 How did you change the marker colours like this?
Depends on the helmet you are wearing
Damn this would have been absolutely GOLDEN had you picked a silent moon. Still good stuff. Next time let's skip Hurston because it interferes with the engines.
I know, but it gets tedious when people constantly post the "lmao sounds in space" comment over and over in my videos.
The lightning?
no eclipse?
I've done a few of these years ago (See my channel) but it's hard to get hold of ships and the time
Nice!
can anyone tell me what ship is in the thumbnail
Anvil F8 lightning
Sounds were way better when they were this sonic bang. They deleted it, I don't know why
at the risk of sounding like an ungrateful jerk... what's with all the wind noise? wasnt there a quieter place to do this?
avenger isnt my favorite, but it is my baby. blade sounds pretty hot. buccaneer sounds surprisingly smooth. defender is nice. khartu-al is sexy.
all souns are the same, something its wrong when recorded, i saw another videos aboout fly by sounds and every ship sounds different, but here sounds almost similar
im so disasapointed that theres no realistic sound speed
Too much backrond/planet storm sounds. You couldn't have done it on a moon that had no storm?
They all sound the same.... I wanna hear the sounds of rocket boosters crackling like when a Spaceship takes off !!!!
Should be called ocean wave sounds.
I've seen Carrack flybys and yours don't sound like them and they all sound the same next time do afterburner flybys they sound WAAAYYYY better some even have sonic booms.
There are different conditions that trigger different sounds. The speed of the ship is one of the main factors as to which sound the game picks to play in any given moment.
This video highlights just how over used the generic jet sound is. Here's hoping the sound designers from Frontier Developments find a new home at CIG.
I'm a bit disappointed with the Sound/FX Devteam...
Almost all ships sound boring!
where are the sounds we know (and like) from the real world
examples?! F-104 , SU-57, A-10, F-18, C2 Globemaster(not that ship ingame) ,B2, Avro VULCAN.... and so on!!!
All have their own characteristic sound!
CIG makes such a big effort with the graphics but then they are "stingy" with the sound
need to be more distinct sounds.... its to similar now.
i think there were better some patch ago, they all sound the same
Can you do a custom version of ship flybys with your special audio talents you have cuz the Star Citizen version is just boring and repetitive they don't sound like anything but white noise flying by even the alien ships should sound a whole lot different but it is just boring they really need to work the sound effect for what people are hearing compared to what you hear in the game it's totally different and really boring sounding and you should be able to see the ship before you hear it not the other way around most of the time when it's coming straight at you
You should come and check out how I bought the Merchantman
i would love to have a supersonic boom in SC
Too true
This is what annoys me about cigs armature to out right lazy development of many of the features. Especially explosions they look cheap and tacky
Also why I need to buy a pair of DT990s
3:14 that was close
You did this on windy ass daymar...also they really fucking nerfed the ship sounds..the arrow was legit once weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeooooooommmm
