I’m 53 years old... & I remember watching this dude when I was 17 years old... he was a local neighborhood phenomenon, this was before all the Albums, before him & will, before all the fame. In philly in 83, all you heard was “yo DJ Jazzy Jeff is having a party at (fill in the blank for the location)& crowds would flock.. none of us realized we were watching a legend at the time.
I'd posite Total Eclipse and Roc Raida have the best routine's of all time (especially Eclipse's who shot ya and Roc Raida's Chief Rocka), but that takes nothing away from this routine. also, just about any dj you meet who has any interest in turntablism knows this routine by heart.
Melvin Bridgewater Jazzy Jeff has been doing some form of this routine for over 20 years. He could do this on turntables and a mixer with no computer. His Rock the bells routine is legendary.
@ste shaw yeah Qbert hasnt followed Jazzy at all, hes about 30 years younger. Dear yuff see live at union square, back in 1986 before your cells had been put together. Jazzy developed the transformer scratch.
Jeff is and will always remain my favorite DJ of all time. I grew up listening to his cuts with the Fresh Prince, but let's be honest we got hooked back then because of Jeff not to take anything away from Will's lyricism.
Haze Morris: Please remember if you've heard a song, (let alone own it on wax), over & over for years and you constantly play with that song in your Hip Hop Set while DJing...,then the very essence of everything you play will become second nature to you. Meaning you won't need any headphones. Point #2: there using SERATO & he has placed a HOT CUE on certain parts of "that" song. (or any song you want to manipulate). If you watch Jeff, you'll see him "keep" pressing on the computer to get to that specific spot versus like back in the day...where you had to "actually-go-to-that-particular-spot" on the record to do the TRICK or SCRATCH whatever you wanted too. Hopefully this info, has helped you see why so many DJ's (especially Hip Hop DJ's), don't "usually" use headphones unless there MIXING or BLENDING something like HOUSE MUSIC or etc..
I’m from New York City and I although it’s the birthplace and the Mecca of hip hop culture, there was never any doubt that the greatest deejay of all time hailed 2 hours south in the city of Philadelphia! Jeff is the undisputed king of the turntables! 💯
This song came out during the 80s and Jazzy's been djing for how long now? He knows that song like the back of his hand lol. Decades worth of craft right there, amazing.
He up there putting on a clinic! The first time I ever saw Jazz was at one of his concerts and he came out to no intro, but cut Rock thr Bells in pieces! I never forgot it! Peace!
D.J. Jazzy Jeff didn't even break a sweat, even the late D.J. AM had to bow down. Anyone & Everyone in the music industry knows who's "THE GOAT" on the turntables.....D.J. JAZZY JEFF, ...NUFF SAID!!!!.
Even within my limited knowledge of Hip-Hop, I'm confident in saying DJ Jazzy Jeff is the CLEANEST, and I mean THE cleanest cutting DJ of them all. No trace of hesitation or misstep or near misses or nothing. Just clear perfection.
I"ve been a DJ mixmasters back in the 80s KDAY days...some dj thinks that a fast scratch sound todays is sick, this scratch session from dj jazzy jeff ....maaann that is by far the Sickest!! i mean it had theme, echo, cleanness sound, back & fourth clear vipe..and then he broke it down at the end....damm best scratch sound ever!!!!
so... djing, generally, is pretty easy. what he just did in this video is next to impossible. i have no words for how impressed with him every time i watch him
Only other DJ who could match jazzy jeff scratch 4 scratch is DJ cash money outta Philly in my opinion but makes the conclusion that the city of Philadelphia has the greatest djs ever in hip hop history...facts.
We had him on at a club in Newcastle with Kenny Dope to go B2B along with Skaters, BMX champions and Breakers...KD broke his leg so didn't fly over..What a night Jazzy made of it..Just WOW Total LEGEND...
As I add this comment I’m filled with emotion for DJ AM, but I am an school Bboy to the Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff (Big respect). DJ AM brought rock and Hip Hop together like DJ Ztrip back in the days. RIP my brother. May you find peace where you didn’t find it here. We don’t know each other but would love to meet you someday. I’m sure I will and we discuss various dope mixes.
on some real shit, I use to watch this dude at the block parties in Philly, before he partnered up with Will Smith, and at that time he had 2 other MCs (Moe Rock & Rockwell), but when you compare Jeff back then to the Jeff of today, he only got better. Frfr, this brutha never lost a step. This nigga is like a DJ God!
@@merckcory65 Thats crazy! I wish I could of see him at a block party back in the day!!! Consider yourself very fortunate to have seen him live like that. I imagine there are very few who can say the same. I just turned 12 when the "He's the DJ, I'm the rapper" album came out. I wore that tape out!
Jazzy is such a DJ. Saw him in a small club in Montreal years ago, a small place. Bought tikets unexpectedly on the street from a guy who wanted to get rid of it. Awesome night. Really that DJ made everything awesome that night.

Me toooo ☺️
Widely regarded as one of the greatest technical DJs ever! This is a tutorial and working thesis on why true heads say this.
I totally agree! I dig the technical skills more so than the tricks and the instant cued up button/quick scratch style that's popular now
I think he's the best Dj of all time.
