    The spring traps I used to use had the metal bait triggers, and I learned that using compressed oat bread packed tightly on those clips was a big draw for the smart packrats. In a dry climate the bread dough dries out quickly and becomes incrusted on the trigger and hard to remove; used to kill 3 to 6 rats on the same bait.

  • @baitcage6987
    @baitcage6987 9 годин тому

    We agree!! That’s why the Bait Cage Kit bait spread is made with high grade meat fats to lure the rats to the traps, keep them feeding, and get them caught!

  • @TheCaphits
    @TheCaphits 2 місяці тому +14

    Remember to set your snap traps with a very easy to set off trigger for more catches and less taken bait.
    Thanks for another great video!

      @@scottcates The release mechanism for the spring should be set such that it has little resistance so the trap is more sensitive to being triggered.

    I’ve always hot glued Hershey kisses to the trap but I also hot glue a piece of cardboard under the trap to keep splatter from getting on anything like tools etc in my garage. I have never had a rat trap, I do this for mice. Sometimes they actually get the candy out without setting it off - my fault in placement.

    • @andrewallason4530
      @andrewallason4530 2 місяці тому +1

      I wonder if you could use the Hershey (or any other brand) chocolate sauce. Just get a little squeeze bottle to keep it in, so as not to contaminate your whole bottle. Couple of good dollops on the trap. Yummo.

    • @Suehuskins
      @Suehuskins 2 місяці тому +2

      @@andrewallason4530 idk they were good at licking peanut butter off the trap without sitting it off. The whole reason I went with hot glue and chocolate is they stole my chocolate out of a ziplock baggie once so I knew they liked that.

    Tying the food to the trigger with some thread helps
    burying the body of the trap helps to make it less obvious. Very light materials work best for this like very dry potting soil.
    Placing a trap near a wall seems to help.

      I learned that the hard way when I was a kid and had both pet mice and rats at the same time. I saved a pet mouse just in time from my pet rat. The mouse had escaped and got too near the rat's cage. I was on the other side of the room reading a comic book and heard the screaming from the mouse. I made a loud noise and spooked the rat right before it gave the death bite. The mouse was pretty scratched up and shaken, but survived. Mice and rats do not mix.
