A good start. My 1st VHS tape was Blade Runner. My mother likely bought it on discount thinking I'd like it without knowing what it was. Changed my view of cinema for life. While my friends could only talk about Star Wars (obviously I was into that as well), I watched Blade Runner and it was like a child becoming a man and realising he has only been playing with toys. Conan was right up there with that too.
That is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. This movie is epic. Conan the Destroyer was a campy cartoon by comparison. More or less a caricature of this movie.
I also grew up watching the Destroyer as a kid & I saw the 1st one years later when I was around 10 years old because it was rated R. I agree the Destroyer is better from a nostalgic standpoint which everyone disagrees with, but not way better. The Destroyer is a better film for kids & the Barbarian is better for adults IMO. I saw The adventures of Conan: Sword & sorcery at Universal studios in 1989 having already seen the Destroyer & it blew my mind. The Destroyer also has more of a magical comic book feel to it as well.

In the director commentary, the director speaks about having the violence like the Roman theatre. Quite violent and savage, but at a distance the way it would have been in the Roman Theatre.
the most amazing shot? and you have to see it in the theatre by the way.this is a must see!!!!!!! in my 56 years of living. i seen it in the theatre and it brought me to tears because of the scene and soundtrack being amazing. 1917 the flare scene. have never seen anything like it.
This is absolutely goat Of the fantasy films. The way its shot etc , all others just seemed fake compared to Conan the barbarian. So glad i got to see it on the big screen when it came out.
Try Conan the Destroyer next. But be warned: it raised the humor level--some say too much--and that could try your patience. But there is a lot of action; it plays out like a role-playing game, and, though some say the climactic fight is hokey, I thought it was okay. Then again, I got into the Conan series when I was hitting puberty (*just* the right time!) and I've read all the Conan books I could find. Also the remake of Conan the Barbarian with Jason Momoa is pretty damned good, too, with a bigger plot and better dialogue. Don't let young fans who know only the Conan comics dissuade you from it.
I keep getting told to check out The Destroyer. I will try to get around to it soon. I did watch the Jason Momoa one, I thought I wouldn't like it, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Best swords/sorcery movie of the 80s. Really in its own league. The lack of stupid dialogue, the music, and the scenery really elevate it.

Best scene in this movie is the orgy fight, when the theme music starts. I get goosebumps every time.
I was in a tiny village in Nova Scotia when that movie came out. I drive about 50 miles, one way, to see it. Twice. Good times.
I grew up watching the destroyer! Love it! They are both awesome but Conan the destroyer is just way better.
After how much I enjoyed this, I'm definitely going to check it out soon.

Red Sonja is also good, even though Arnie plays a supporting role.
The only plus that Destroyer has over Barbarian is Grace Jones. Everything else is inferior in every way.

John Milius's masterpiece only rivaled by the original Red Dawn.
The Lord of the Rings used to be my favorite fantasy movie. The older I get I prefer Conan The Barbadian more.

My wife and I tackled the Predator movies when Prey was coming out! Predator is great, and Predators with Adrian Brody is super underrated.
