I really appreciate you highlighting how helpful and friendly Ultra Magnus is to Rodimus Prime in the cartoon. It really points out how out of character he was in that what if comic from IDW, Transformers: Deviations. Magnus was just constantly hard on Hot Rod for no reason, treating him as a major screw up, even when he didn't do anything wrong. He definitely felt more like a voice for the author's dislike of Hot Rod, and part of the reason why this story reads like fan fiction.
That was a great part of the show, watching Rodimus being helped along and grow into the role of leader thanks to Magnus.
I agree. It was such a hate fest for the Season 3 cast and Perceptor too just killing them all off except Kup only because he was with Optimus.

It's also possible that Ultra Magnus was an upgraded Smokescreen.
Same color scheme, both have shoulder missiles, same voice actor, and when UM appears, like Superman with Clark Kent, Smokescreen is no longer around.

Ultra Magnus deserved better....he was the stoic commander that did what needed to be done....never worried about whether he would be in command he was a soldier's soldier.....deserved way better....I liked him being the wise veteran offering advice to the young leader...

I do love Magnus. Him and Rodimus make a great duo and I like the early 2000s idea in R.I.D. and Dreamwave to make him Optimus' brother it added a little something to both their characters. My favorite version of him is defiantly the Animated version because that whole show was an amazing reimagining of everything that is Transformers instead of just rehashing G1 like most modern stuff does and it's a awesome toy compatible with Bulkhead's Headmaster helmet and had that fun Roadbuster recolor which may have been made only to keep a trademark, but I love off color figures so I'll always take a new one.
I became a fan of Magnus from the moment I first saw him in Transformers: The Movie. For all the reasons you've laid out here. He had his flaws. But he was strong, courageous, and fought to the end. Thank you! Beautiful work!

You're the only UA-camr I know of who talks about and understands the essences of what true, old school (i.e. eternal) heroism, courage, selflessness and valour really are, and isn't afraid to say it out loud. I would have said 'toy UA-camr' but, heck, I can't think of anyone else I've heard talking from a position of the same wisdom either.

PS: Of the Ultra Magnuses (or is that Magni...?) you couldn't fit in here, I can especially highly recommend checking out the one from IDW Comics' 'More Than Meets the Eye'/'Lost Light' series - for me, it takes many of the iconic character traits you mentioned and extrapolates their implications into some very interesting stories indeed, yes...?

Great Video about Ultra Magnus. I love the way you edit your videos. I have the Ultra Magus from the Kingdom release in 2021 and the one from the 80's but that one is incomplete. Maybe one day I'll get it complete. Transformers is one of my favorite cartoons and toy lines growing up in the 80's.

It has been great to learn more about Transformers lore and media from many parts of the world. Those Japanese toy/candy figures had to be quite sweet and fun at the same time. Ultra Magnus was definitely a class act.
Yeah, wish we had Kabaya toys over here. The closest we had in my area was Kinder Egg toys, but Kabaya Transformers blow those away.

Something I always thought was funny he's even though Magnus was billed as City Commander we always sell blaster in charge of Metroplex in the 86 season 3 of Transformers

The Kingdom version of Ultra Magnus was no doubt the best design. ( Although I could imagine if they do a reboot of the Transformers G1 to find out who Ultra Magnus was ).

In the Transformers Legends manga Ultra Magnus is revived to help fight the time travelling future Galvatron that first appeared in issue #78 of the US Marvel comic, officially named 'Galvatron II' to tell him apart from the other time traveling Galvatron from the UK comic; Galvatron II is a favorite of Japanese writers for filling plot holes from before the movie made it over there. Legends being a comedy, the first thing he does after being revived is criticize the Headmasters for his method of burial.
To add, RID Magnus isn't even Magnus in name only, he's Magnus is translation only, all the characters who use older characters' names in the US version are entirely different characters in the original Japanese version
Ultra Magnus never really resonated with me. I never hade the toy as a kid and I didn’t read the comics. But I’m a fan now. That was a joy to watch/listen. Thanks.

Bay supposedly wanted Magnus to play the role Sentinel had in dark of the moon, however hasbro intervened to avoid a situation where the characters established integrity came into question!

Great Video! Ultra Magnus has always been my favorite. Passed up by the Matrix and fans mocked him for not being worthy of the Matrix, yet he moves forward and fights for what is right. He doesn’t care for accolades he just fights for what is right and will give his life so others can live.

- Orion Pax was rebuilt into Optimus Prime
- Ariel was rebuilt into into Elita-1
- Magnum was rebuilt into Ultra Magnus
- Dion was never rebuilt into anyone
Alpha Trion himself tells us that he only has enough parts to rebuild Magnum OR Dion, but then never tells us which one he rebuilds.
Hasbro eventually outright directly confirmed that Dion was never rebuilt into any other robot, which is then the last piece of information we need to know that Magnum was the robot who became Ultra Magnus (and...I mean...duh, that's obviously the reason Magnum was designed.)
If Dion was rebuilt into anyone, it would be Huffer - a robot that:
- shares Dion's colors
- essentially looks like Optimus Prime/Ultra Magnus
- except about half the size of Optimus/Magnus (almost as if Alpha Trion didn't have enough parts to rebuild him as a full-size Optimus/Magnus-style robot)
- has a seemingly innate role as a helper/sidekick minion for Optimus, almost as if he was built for that purpose at the same time....
This then streamlines the logic, where Orion and Ariel were rebuilt into super versions of their original designs using the same colors, and so was Magnum, .....rather than Dion inexplicably gaining a radically different design and color scheme that matched Magnum for some reason.
Related, but technically a separate matter, Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus SHOULD be acknowledged as brothers ins EVERY continuity. ESPECIALLY all the ones where Magnus is a white Optimus with armor.
They both have the same "father" who rebuilt them, and they're twins.
It's ludicrous and outright BIZARRE that the only continuity that recognizes them as brothers is RID Ultra Magnus - the only continuity where they're WILDLY different designs. 🤦♂
Even Animated Magnus looks like he's essentially just Animated Optimus wearing armor.
Plus, it makes sense that their father built two ultimate champion super robots, but he only had ONE Matrix Of Leadership, so he gave the other one the Magnus Armor instead, so they each gained a unique super upgrade.
But I guess MAYBE that then makes it slightly awkward that Elita-1 is technically then Optimus' sister....?
But who cares?
She's not REALLY.
It's not like she's even a pink Opimus Prime robot.
Meanwhile.....Dion/Huffer is just lucky Alpha Trion scrounged together enough spare parts to rebuild him at all.
Watching the Hasbro cartoons, to me it felt like Rodimus Prime was the young and dumb "2nd lieutenant" bumbling his way through leadership simply because of the rank he held while Ultra Magnus was the "sergeant major" who was the real leader behind the operation that everybody respected. If I was part of the "think tank" at Hasbro, with the character design it would have made more sense to make Ultra Magnus into "Optimus Prime version 2" with an in-story explanation that his car carrier assembly was a "life support" system after Optimus' death at the hands of Megatron. It would have saved a lot of kids from crying or moms writing in angry letters.

Ultra Magnus has always been my favorite. I still have my G1, which has the missing paint, windshield and plastic tires (18:08). Up until now, I always thought that version was the first release of the toy, not the second.
Got the original for Christmas in 1986 when I was 7,after seeing the movie months before I always figured the white Optimus Prime was just his dead body integrated into Ultra Magnus to fill out his body and form his truck.

The rubber tires were only available for the first issue of the toy in early 1986. By the end of the year plastic wheels were the norm. I've seen a sealed example with the mail in poster offer which would have been a late summer/fall 1986 premium. Magnus had some very interesting variations. You had:
1. rubber tires/painted heads
2. plastic wheels/painted heads
3. unpainted head but painted mask/plastic wheels
4. plastic wheels, both heads unpainted and lack of chrome and loss of windshield.
Its not known if the first 3 were available solely in 1987 or as running changes throughout 1986 but the final variation would have been the 1987 release. It was said that Kaybee toys carried Ultra Magnus without the windshield as an exclusive as a way to sell the toy at a much lower retail price, but I've never seen documentation to prove this. You still see the windshield/lack of chrome and paint magnus toys listed from time to time as Kaybee exclusive.

Another Brit here who loved Marvel UK Ultra Magnus. It's not often our versions of the US stuff is superior, but it's basically Soundwave compared to the Constructicons ;)
Speaking of Magnus, I legit hope we can get a transformers prime figure of him for the wreckers line. I really think Hasbro could retool the laser prime figure into him
i was in like 2nd grade when this was made. i kinda stopped with toys when i was around 11. . but i had alot of the first gen tranformers . i had a sleeping bag i got for christmas with transformers . my friend had the constructacons and voltron . i remember it was a big deal to him his mom had them on lay away for months at gemco. lol. he had so many toys it was hilarious.

I got ultra Magnus as 1986 xmas present ❤ along with Voltron and Venom Jackhammmer.
It's kinda interesting Optimus prime was the ultimate leader. But it took both Rodimus , Magnus and at times Kup it takes all of them supporting each other to keep going forward. But they did their best. But it was great to bring Prime back.
A really special new commander class ultra magnus was announced for SS86, and if it's anything like the rodimus, it'll be the best representation of the character.

I never had the original 1986 transformers. If I get rich I would buy few if them just to remind me that I wait 35 years to get these memories that I can't afford as a kid.
The RID Ultra Magnus is my Ultra Magnus cause RID and the Unicron Trilogy was the transformers I grew up with nothing gen 1 related so it's interesting to see how others view him
Ultra Magnus was going to originally be in Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of The Moon. But was replaced by Sentinal Prime.

My Ultra Magnus had plastic wheels, no "glass", Magnus was all white no chrome accents or paint, Ultra Magnus head was all blue, and no metal.
I might be the minority here, but I prefer a slimmer looking Magnus....like Optimus Prime. Then I can pose him in great actions!

This is an amazing video but I will answer a question that you had the reason that he's not in the live-action movies cuz Michael Bay actually cared about the audience he didn't want it because then the phantom would have started crying at him and would have burned down his house
How many version of RID cartoon series are there? The one Netflix has seems to be more modern version of the one you talk about in this video with Ultra Magnus as a douchebag. Wonder where i can find this version of the series and watch it?

So just curious, did the Diaclone line have any supporting fiction to go along with it? It’s interesting that the name Convoy was carried over from Diaclone to Transformers but not Powered Convoy in the Japanese series

Like I mentioned on your UA-cam community page, my favourite version of Magnus is definitely the one in the Marvel UK comics, so thank you for giving both him and the comics themselves so much well-deserved praise here - as you can see in the following extract from the classic 'Target 2006', his rivalry with Galvatron was truly the stuff of legends, yes...?
Galvatron: '...How many times must I beat you before you realise the futility of further struggle? Does your pathetic Autobot Code demand sacrifices? Must I destroy you to stop you...?!'
Ultra Magnus: 'Yes...'

I always wondered why and how they were able to put him back together in the movie and he never lost his spark like Optimus. It made no sense back then to me as a 8 year old kid.
I get it now that it was done for the new toy line and money but back then it never made any sense.
