Every time I hear Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus, I can't help thinking about him hosting Unsolved Mysteries. "If you have any information about the disappearance of Optimus Prime, or any of the other G1 Autobots..." 😀
Every time I hear him, I keep expecting him to order the Autobots to grab a Decepticon and give him a body cavity search. "And don't stop until you feel his teeth!"
I hope they find Red Alert. They dismissed his ramblings as a product of his chronic paranoia but it looks like he may have been right about some of them.
Having just watched your video today, I just read that Jack Angel has passed away. The voice of Ultra Magnus, Omega Supreme, Astrotrain and others. RIP good sir. You brought a lot of joy to children with your work.
Ultra Magnus served double duty as his white Prime form was used as the dead Optimus Prime (and then later as the return of Optimus Prime saw him utilising a white protective shield against the infected Transformers) which I'm sure many, many 80s kids did.
Admit it, we all would have been fine if Ultra Magnus had become the next prime. Also the fact that he didn’t accept it at first speaks a lot about his character and makes him one of my favorite autobots.
The mystery of Silverbolt's ramp was that it was part of his base mode. Silverbolt could then attach to Metroplex in his base mode, which ended with the ramp. Hot Spot had a repair bay mode that would also attach, making Metroplex into Scramble City. (The aerialbots or any combiner could also attach to Metroplex's arms and legs if you remove his kneecaps in robot mode to make Super Metroplex.) Thanks for making these videos! Always a treat to watch!
Onslaught and Motormaster did the same for Trypticon, and Silverbolt and Hotshot could link up to Metroplex as you mention. A friend of mine owned Meetroplex, and I had Silverbolt and Hotshot, we played the hell out of those toys, but we never did figure out that they could be linked together. Looking back, It kind of irks me as a kid I could never figure that one out. Oh well.
I've always loved when Robert Stack did an "Unsolved Mysteries" parody for the movie "BASEket Ball" when there's a nation wide man hunt for Joe Cooper (Trey Parker) after abandoning his team the Milwaukee Beers. It's hilarious. 😅
My Aunt came to our grandmother’s house with a brand new Ultra Magnus one day. 6 year old me didn’t realize it was for my cousin, not myself. No problem. An hour of uncontrollable sobbing later, and I had a Magnus of my very own. Thing is, once I got to the store, it was Blur that I really wanted but at that point I kinda already made my bed.
Ultra Magnus was a great consolation prize for those of us not lucky enough to have been gifted an Optimus Prime. Thanks for another trip down memory lane.
It honestly blew my mind when I found out that the helmet could combine with the chestpiece to make a mini vehicle. He'd been sitting on my shelf for years and I never knew.
I have watched the 1986 movie so many times. However it has never been as great as when I saw it in the theater 2 weeks ago. Seeing Magnus on the big screen made me and everyone else in the theater cheer.
I'm so glad there's a figure that does Magnus justice nowadays. Not another white Optimus redeco, not the weird, kinda wrong Combiner Wars version with that little car guy... but the awesome Cybertronian power truck in Siege (or the Earth form in Kingdom). How legendary!
I seem to remember seeing some old photos of the Powered Convoy materials where the chest piece is a little car. If you look at the 'wing' ends and the front, you'll see holes on the sides that old the axles for a set of small double wheels. I always thought that when Hot Rod caught the Matrix as it dropped from Optimus's hands, the glow that floods the screen, it was the Matrix acknowledging Hot Rod as the next leader. If only Magnus wasn't so clumsy. Back when Reprolabels were making their original upgrade sets, one of them included some while panels that covered much of the lower legs to help break up the big red areas so he looked less like a brick. Sadly it doesn't seem like they have it anymore, but you probably could do the same with some white electrical tape. Just cut out the centre rectangles for the raised details. I never did get Magnus in his original release, but picked up the Takara reissues of the early 2000's. I wished I saved it, but at some point I saw someone make a photo comic where G1 Optimus 'steals' Magnus's 'pants'. It was pretty funny.
Probably because they had 2 reasons to get away from the Megatron persona. First, to get rid of the Transformer that turned into a realistic gun, and second, to get rid of the name with the atomic bomb connotation. My guess is they wanted to keep Prime's memory around for the others to look up to and be inspired by rather than have him simply reformatted like Megatron was.
Ultra Magnus was one of my favorites. I felt that the lesson of Ultra Magnus is that even though the matrix didn’t choose him, he still did his best as one of the leaders of the Autobots as a warrior, commander, giving advice , and standing in by battle giving all you have even when he knows he will lose as in the last episode of the Headmaster’s series. Not everyone can be Optimus Prime or Rodimus Prime but he did his best.
I never understood why people have an issue with Magnus saying "I can't deal with that now". I mean, what was he supposed to do right then? Put a stop to things and mourn the (supposed) loss? Basically he was saying, "Fight now, cry later".
I believe the idea was in the original script he was Drawn And Quartered instead of shot to pieces. So then it would make sense for the junkeons to be able to fix him up from that as it’s shown they can put themselves back together
That is EXACTLY how I was introduced to Ultra Magnus as well! After that commercial, I saved up the 40 bucks he cost and lamented that I would never have the money to own his nemesis Galvatron (at least that's what the commercial had me believe.) Magnus was the leader of my team of Autobots anyway, as he fought the evil Cyclonus, and beat the hell out of Menasor (since he was bigger than him anyway)
I used to have Ultra Magnus as a kid. My aunt got it for me for Christmas. But my dad didn't like my aunt, so he took it and threw it to the floor and broke it. But now that I'm older and starting a trans formers collection, and restoring old transformers, I'm going to find another Ultra Magnus.
I bought this online when I was in college in the late 1990s because we couldn’t afford it when it first came out. It seemed so much more magical in 1986 than 1998, thanks goodness for the modern remakes of my favorite Transformers.
Cool stuff. That weird ramp for Silverbolt is for a base mode he could take. Yeah, it's official. Ultra Magnus has gotten a relative ton of new toys recently, though while watching this video, I was puzzling out the new Kup figure (complete with Energon Goodie!)

Awesome video of Transformers Ultrs Magnus. I really liked the character in the animated movie and TV series and I actually got excited when I thought that he was in the fourth Bayformers movie but it was just Prime coverd in white dust (LOL). Great video Michael, you so totally rock.
Honestly I'm glad we never got Magnus in the live action movies, as his role was originally intended to be what Sentinel Prime's was in Dark of the Moon. I don't think many fans could handle the idea of a turncoat Magnus who betrays Prime let alone the Autobots.
Not to mention how badly Magnus got screwed over in the '86 animated movie, can you imagine how badly Michael Bay who doesn't give a flying flip about Transformers in the first place, would've screwed poor, poor Magnus?
First the Broadside part was great. 😁. I had Magnus but I never use him as Magnus . He was Prime with a new trailer/ battle platform and when they brought Prime back and he was coated in that white metal I felt justified.
I still have the toy, I have the rare blue-faced one, with plastic wheels and without the details. White cab is very decoloured now, missing the parts but the main ones are still there like the head and torso parts. Used to play a lot with him and was stoked when I got him.

G1 Ultra magnus is cooler than G1 optimus prime because he combines with his trailer. This was even before power master optimus prime. Also, I think ultra magnus’ trailer had a turret mode shown in the box.

@@MichaelMercy Me. I LOVE that show. Upon hearing Magnus's anxiety (?) to take a leadership position, yet excels as a right hand man, I gotta say I feel for the guy and notice similarities in myself.
Not to contradict Magnus himself, but I definitely have time for this. Love the Unsolved Mysteries nod 🤣. Adding an anecdotal bit- the first time I saw this toy was a friend that used to go to Japan to visit family. He always had the coolest Japanese toys. One of them was Powered Convoy. I lost my mind when I first saw it.
Love the Powered Convoy colours. Wish I had picked one up when the reissue was cheap some years back. I'm surprised they didn't just release Powered Convoy in those same Takara colours in '86 and have him be Optimus. Hasbro wasn't above reissuing old characters in new outfits like Snake Eyes, Hawk or Roadblock, and it seems Optimus was a good enough seller in '84 for his initial release to warrant an update. I've always wondered why they decided to ditch such a popular character for a brand new character who plays second fiddle to the new leader.
Thanks for this review! Man, I got into Transformers about a year late and never had an Optimus Prime. But I did get an Ultra Magnus a couple of years in, and wow, what a great action figure! So many cool features and playability for a grade school kid. Oddly enough, I never thought about all the times in the movie he dropped, or nearly dropped the Matrix. Ultra Buttah Fingas?
Got him for Christmas after the movie came out. Cool figure indeed. Also, I did the same thing with his head and chest piece. I believe that the original Takara version came with a figure for the head/chest combo .
Throughout Transformers movie, series and comics Ultra Magnus is treated as a martyr, I hated that. Ultra Magnus is a cool character and I know his G1 incarnation still rocks. Never Agreed about his techs specs His stats are rather low for a Second in Command autobot. I'm still hunting for G1 Ultra Magnus, but at least I have the Combiner Wars, Siege & Kingdom versions. Nice Review.
Wow. I didn't have the money for the toys back in the day (Did manage to get the Robotech/Jetfire, and a few of the lower tier characters), and really only view them now on channels like this, so after all these years I just today learned that Ultra Magnus is a white colored Prime under all the armor. I had no idea.
Magnus prime sounds good! only if he was worthy, anyways Awesome review Michael! im loving these g1 reviews, because youre so open minded, calm and true to what you are saying, which is what i love about your reviews
It baffles me how Hasbro and the film’s writers didn’t come up with the idea of resurrecting Optimus Prime as Ultra Magnus since his toy is just an upgraded version of Prime’s. They had no qualms with resurrecting Megatron as Galvatron after all.
12:24 Correction: He's rebuilt incorrectly by the Juckions (They put his legs on the wrong sides), only to be fine in the next scene. That "wax" is magical! lol
My biggest Ultra Magnus memory would be receiving him as a Christmas gift from my parents in '86. I was 8, almost 9. My niece, who was a few months older than me had gotten a Barbie and my sister/her mom came over for dinner. By the end of the evening, Magnus and Barbie were married lol I'm lucky to afford the chance to rebuild Magnus and am down to the final few pieces. Hoping to have him ready by this Christmas to mark 35 years since I first received him.
I had Ultra Magnus as a kid. Mine wasn't the most well-made, though -- one of the big robot fists was loose, so he always had to keep that arm bent at the elbow so it wouldn't fall off. The missile launchers had to be plugged in a certain way, too, as one peg seemed too big for the hole, and would sort of get pushed out. And no spring-loaded action, either. Despite all this, I loved the character and had a lot of fun with him, and he even let me experience some of the joy of owning my own Optimus, though Rodimus Prime was still the guy in charge -- at least until Optimus returned as a Powermaster. =)
Every time I hear Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus, I can't help thinking about him hosting Unsolved Mysteries. "If you have any information about the disappearance of Optimus Prime, or any of the other G1 Autobots..." 😀

This retrospect was as cool as I thought it would be. G1 Rules. As does the Real Nostalgia Heroes of the Patreon Tribe.
👍
I always like ultra magnus
Great work MM, thanks for sharing
👍
Awesome stuff Mike!👍😁. I really like the colors used on this big guy! 👍😁
Thanks Bill! He really pulls off the baby blue.
@@MichaelMercy Yes he does fiend! One of my favorite colors😁
I watched this while transforming my war for cybertron: kingdom ultra Magnus for the first time, I just love his design
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
@@MichaelMercy i always do my friend!
They should have kept him as the leader of the Autobots
He doesn’t want to be a leader.
In Japan the scramble city version on Silverbolt was spring loaded the idea was to transform him into his platform mode and launch the areal bots off
It baffles me how Hasbro and the film’s writers didn’t come up with the idea of resurrecting Optimus Prime as Ultra Magnus since his toy is just an upgraded version of Prime’s. They had no qualms with resurrecting Megatron as Galvatron after all.

Correction: He's rebuilt incorrectly by the Juckions (They put his legs on the wrong sides), only to be fine in the next scene. That "wax" is magical! lol
My biggest Ultra Magnus memory would be receiving him as a Christmas gift from my parents in '86. I was 8, almost 9. My niece, who was a few months older than me had gotten a Barbie and my sister/her mom came over for dinner. By the end of the evening, Magnus and Barbie were married lol
I'm lucky to afford the chance to rebuild Magnus and am down to the final few pieces.
I think Ultra Magnus scored not being inclided in the bayverse,
those movies had issues.
Loved Magnus. One of my friends named her cat Magnus. True story!
Could it combine with a scratching post to become Ultra Magnus?
@@MichaelMercy You'd have to my friend. That cat is one with the Matrix now!
I was hurt when as a child I watched Ultra Magnus turn Prime down when given the Matrix of Leadership in the movie.
Sometimes it hurts to be humble.
Ultra Magnus was my first Transformer.
Awesome video! Well done! I hope you have a great weekend! Nerdmaste! 😊
Thanks Stephanie! Have a wonderful weekend! ✌
How do your toys look so clean
