I've been living on and off in Mexico for about 35 years. I've always said we'll know when Mexico has a good president once the Mexicans start moving back. We'll see!
Jose, I'm curious about whether Mexico has seen the same issue with the substantial increase in the minimum wage over the last 5 or 6 years as Canada has. In Canada, whenever minimum wage is increased, business owners, both large and small, increase the prices of whatever they're peddling, in order to compensate for whatever that wage increase is. The owners, even of large businesses, are unwilling to take the hit in their own wallets, so they put the prices up, essentially rendering the wage increase useless to anyone who received it. The cost of daily life increases with every minimum wage "hike". Do you think that has been a factor in the rise in the cost of living in Mexico? I know a lot of people would prefer to blame the sharp increase in the number of foreigners coming to live in Mexico for the cost of living going up, but I have to wonder if the huge jump in minimum wage isn't more to blame, with business owners having to raise prices in order to keep pace. Thoughts?
Yes Mexico has seen a substantial increase in the minimum wage and in all wages across the board. I think it has contributed some to the price increases but I think most of the price increases have been mostly due to inflation. But since Mexico didn't take on as much debt as other countries have during the last 5-6 years the increase in prices have kept pace with the increase in wages so things are not out of hand. Even though most things have gone up in price, wages are much better than they were before and therefore most people are actually making more and are doing much better all around.
@@JoseArteagaTravels That's good to hear, Jose! Thanks for the response. I was very curious, being a minimum wage worker in the service industry.
