I was homeschooled growing up. The first standardized test I took was the GED. Passed no problem. Took a few years off to work minimum wage jobs and get some world experience. Jumped into college after that and now have a Masters degree. I definitely agree that most children should not feel pressured to go right into college and pursue some career when they know nothing about actual jobs out there. Life isn't a race.

When you were speaking on standardized tests, I thought of my son, who graduated with honors from the University of Texas. When He graduated, I told him I was in awe of how smart he was!! He said, “ Oh, Mom, I’m not that smart, I’m just a good test taker”! 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Palm Springs is a unique destination for sure. I used to work for Palm Springs Life, which is a flagship lifestyle magazine for the region, (and their 30+ magazines) and feel Palm Springs has a magical element to it. Something about the way the sunlight hits the mountains there, it’s just different. The city is built for visitors. Because of the heat in the summer, even residents will choose to live there seasonally if they can, and many can. I would say many, if not most, of the residents are retired but have another home(s) elsewhere. Pools can be used year-round, and the climate is dry so pools are a lifesaver. Shopping, dining, relaxing, that’s the draws people, lots of conventions to Palm Springs. Popular with celebrities since the 1940’s as well.
I use to live in Palm Springs, and yes it can feel surreal! The beautiful surrounding mountains at sunset are amazing and the tram is worth going up the mountain to see the desert floor. If you are still there or visit again, Tylers downtown, has the best homemade potato salad and burgers. Hope you enjoyed your trip. Went to PS decades ago and it is an oasis in the desert. Was a hotspot for celebrities in the 50’s-60’s. Known for its mid century modern homes. Wish you could have seen more of it. Glad you are reaping the benefits of your hard work!

Sleeping on my back… I’ve made half-hearted efforts to do it and been quite unsuccessful. I struggle to relax and get comfortable, like a turtle on its back. It also makes me feel vulnerable. I don’t recall nightmares, but I don’t generally recall dreams. I’ve decided that I will risk the wrinkles just so I can get good quality sleep.
I'm a music teacher. By and large, my view is that the focus in education on standardized tests steals real learning opportunities from students. There is only so much time in the school day, and people are children only once. I'm sure that these tests have their place to an extent-but the prevalence of them is the problem. If you look into it, there is financial motivation in pushing these tests. Whenever there is an imbalance in a system, someone is making a lot of money. Many teachers I know have their children opt out of taking the exams. My children are older, and missed the big NCLB testing push. I'm really enjoying your points of view on life, in addition to your skin care content, Dr. Dray!

You're so right about the standardized tests. Taking them is a skill in itself. I did exactly what you're talking about with passing a test when you don't know the subject matter. I got a high enough score on the math part of the GRE to get into grad school for math if that were the only requirement. The odd thing about that is that the last math class I took was Algebra 2 in high school.

Thanks for sharing your trip. I had a conference in Palm Dessert several years ago. It was in June and unbearably hot, especially for a girl from northern New England. Southern California as well as much of the southwest and northwestern Mexico get their water from the Colorado River which is why its drying up 😢 The current water consumption and utilization in the southwestern U.S. is unsustainable.
Psalm Springs was our go to weekend place when my kids were little, I was so careful of my kids and sunburn that we would go to the movies in the heat of the afternoon and then swim at night!! You would be happy.

Palm Springs is a nice little getaway place. I live close to the area. If you ever go again I recommend going on the Tram. The temperature is cooler up there. Walking around on the mountain is beautiful. I'm happy you got the opportunity to go. You are my favorite on UA-cam.
I went to Palm Springs for my friends wedding years ago, and it was the most amazing experience. She rented out a villa for all of us as bridesmaids, and it was such a gorgeous place.

I liked hearing your thoughts on the standardized testing. I couldn’t agree more with what you said about how it can reinforce what students are not good at. It can be so discouraging not doing well on tests on kids that have learning disabilities. So for sleep walking…. My son is a sleep walker. He seems to sleep walk more when he is sick. One time when traveling he slept walked and left our room!!! What a scare, the loud sound of the door closing woke us up. For the rest of the vacation we put suitcases to block the door.

In your travel vlogs, I wondered about your safety. Of course, I should have known that you would be smart about NOT posting your whereabouts. So thankful. I have visited Palm Springs several times during the winter for golf. We have family who live there and we ask the same thing about the water situation. They explained that there is a huge aquifer below P.S. that supplies water for the 100+ golf courses in the area. While it can be beautiful, the high 120+ temps during the summers are not! Much Appreciation and Thanks right back to you, Dr. Dray!

I love Palm Springs. My in-laws owned a condo (second home) there for 20 years. We would visit twice a year from the Bay Area. The mountain range is beautiful. There are countless fabulous restaurants and retail stores. The museum is really nice. I’m sorry you didn’t have a chance to get out, go walk downtown, and explore a bit. Maybe you’ll go back someday and have an opportunity to actually see the area.
I lived in Joshua Tree for a few years and visited Palm Springs from time to time. It's for rich old people basically. People from LA have vacation homes there and it's super snooty. Not my style personally. The airport is my favorite though.
Yes. You are right. California is in a horrible drought. Wildlife are dying trees are dying but if you’ve got money and Palm Springs has plenty then you can buy anything you want at the price of other lives. Thanks for your content I love it good for you

We conserve water here in Palm Springs. We have restrictions on watering lawns which uses much more than swimming pools. A lot of places/homes have desert landscaping so no lawns or watering needed.
The sleep&glow... I'm telling you this because I think you'd be interested. I'm normally a side sleeper, but the sleep&glow lower corner pushes into my face. When I'm back sleeping, I get back and neck pain, (which is what I bought the pillow for) and I wake myself up with a snore, when I don't normally snore. So I think maybe there's something to that and other people's nightmares. Maybe. I'm trying to give it a good shot, but I might end up returning it. I love that you prioritize your sleep so much and that you've got so many tips and tricks that work out for you. I'm still on the journey.
Wow… it looks like your time in Palm Springs was fabulous! I’ve dreamt of going there for many years, as the old school glamour of the place really appeals to me. And the modernist architecture is apparently amazing. Does anyone else think of photographer Slim Aarons’ “Poolside Glamour” and “Desert House Party” when they hear the name Palm Springs?
I spent 4 days in Palm Springs one September many years ago. It was an odd feeling being there, but pretty nice. I was working at an event, but did have a couple of extra days to explore the town. It was pleasant, but I have not had to urge to go back!
I'm a side sleeper but everytime I've had a nightmare I've woken up laying on my back. I can definitely relate to having nightmares whilst sleeping on my back. 🤷
Hi Dr. Dray. So glad you had a wonderful experience! Palm Springs is totally worth experiencing when you have the freedom to explore. It’s a gorgeous area and has some fabulous hiking. In the last 20 years Palm Springs has become part retirement community and part artsy fartsy. It has lots of mid century modern architecture which draws many in the design crowd. When I was a kid it was a combination of retirement and weekend homes - thus the golf courses and tennis courts. 😂 In the 80’s and 90’s, I don’t know about now, Palm Springs is where we went for spring break. It was a mad house of teenagers, and early 20 something’s, taking over the town, cruising, partying, and behaving badly. It could take hours to drive down a single block. You laid out at the pool all day and rampaged all night. I don’t know how the locals felt but we had a blast. 😂
I used to lived there and yes it’s beautiful and so many things to do and the art work .. wow ! . Pools are definitely a must living in So Cal , it’s get so hot and humid In Palm Springs . But I loved it .
Palm Springs is honestly one of my favorite places. It’s got a very 1960’s vibe. You would love the sky tram ride up the mountain and hike all around the mountain top with views of Palm Springs. You really need to go back and spend some time exploring.

You just reminded me of something. When I was having my blood drawn, I was sooooo nervous, I closed my eyes and felt something on my arm and yelled “ Is is over “. The nurse laughed so hard while she was telling me that it was the cotton ball that I felt. So embarrassing ! 🫣

Todays content was great. I seeing the creators summit. I’m working on an offsite meeting for my work and the team building games sound fun. Ours will be at. A pumpkin patch so no one can jump in a pool.
I liked hearing your thoughts on the standardized testing. I couldn’t agree more with what you said about how it can reinforce what students are not good at. It can be so discouraging not doing well on tests on kids that have learning disabilities.
So for sleep walking…. My son is a sleep walker. He seems to sleep walk more when he is sick. One time when traveling he slept walked and left our room!!! What a scare, the loud sound of the door closing woke us up. For the rest of the vacation we put suitcases to block the door.

In your travel vlogs, I wondered about your safety. Of course, I should have known that you would be smart about NOT posting your whereabouts. So thankful.
I have visited Palm Springs several times during the winter for golf. We have family who live there and we ask the same thing about the water situation. They explained that there is a huge aquifer below P.S. that supplies water for the 100+ golf courses in the area. While it can be beautiful, the high 120+ temps during the summers are not!

I love Palm Springs. My in-laws owned a condo (second home) there for 20 years. We would visit twice a year from the Bay Area. The mountain range is beautiful. There are countless fabulous restaurants and retail stores. The museum is really nice. I’m sorry you didn’t have a chance to get out, go walk downtown, and explore a bit. Maybe you’ll go back someday and have an opportunity to actually see the area.

I lived in Joshua Tree for a few years and visited Palm Springs from time to time. It's for rich old people basically. People from LA have vacation homes there and it's super snooty. Not my style personally. The airport is my favorite though.
Yes. You are right. California is in a horrible drought. Wildlife are dying trees are dying but if you’ve got money and Palm Springs has plenty then you can buy anything you want at the price of other lives. Thanks for your content I love it good for you
Same here. I love music and singing and being creative with playing piano, but in my head I knew I wouldn’t be able to make a living out of it as the competition is tough. Instead I chose to study accounting and I’m glad I went that direction.

We conserve water here in Palm Springs. We have restrictions on watering lawns which uses much more than swimming pools. A lot of places/homes have desert landscaping so no lawns or watering needed.
The sleep&glow... I'm telling you this because I think you'd be interested. I'm normally a side sleeper, but the sleep&glow lower corner pushes into my face. When I'm back sleeping, I get back and neck pain, (which is what I bought the pillow for) and I wake myself up with a snore, when I don't normally snore. So I think maybe there's something to that and other people's nightmares. Maybe. I'm trying to give it a good shot, but I might end up returning it. I love that you prioritize your sleep so much and that you've got so many tips and tricks that work out for you. I'm still on the journey.
Wow… it looks like your time in Palm Springs was fabulous! I’ve dreamt of going there for many years, as the old school glamour of the place really appeals to me. And the modernist architecture is apparently amazing.

I spent 4 days in Palm Springs one September many years ago. It was an odd feeling being there, but pretty nice. I was working at an event, but did have a couple of extra days to explore the town. It was pleasant, but I have not had to urge to go back!
I'm a side sleeper but everytime I've had a nightmare I've woken up laying on my back. I can definitely relate to having nightmares whilst sleeping on my back. 🤷
Hi Dr. Dray. So glad you had a wonderful experience! Palm Springs is totally worth experiencing when you have the freedom to explore. It’s a gorgeous area and has some fabulous hiking. In the last 20 years Palm Springs has become part retirement community and part artsy fartsy. It has lots of mid century modern architecture which draws many in the design crowd. When I was a kid it was a combination of retirement and weekend homes - thus the golf courses and tennis courts. 😂 In the 80’s and 90’s, I don’t know about now, Palm Springs is where we went for spring break. It was a mad house of teenagers, and early 20 something’s, taking over the town, cruising, partying, and behaving badly. It could take hours to drive down a single block. You laid out at the pool all day and rampaged all night. I don’t know how the locals felt but we had a blast. 😂

I used to lived there and yes it’s beautiful and so many things to do and the art work .. wow ! . Pools are definitely a must living in So Cal , it’s get so hot and humid In Palm Springs . But I loved it .

Palm Springs is honestly one of my favorite places. It’s got a very 1960’s vibe. You would love the sky tram ride up the mountain and hike all around the mountain top with views of Palm Springs. You really need to go back and spend some time exploring.
I have enjoyed these travel vlogs so much. I had to leave my career due to chronic illness, and I really miss professional travel conferences!
