A 48V system can provide more power, improve energy recuperation, and allow up to an 85% decrease in cable mass. 12-volt systems can provide only 3.5 kilowatts, while a 48 V power could achieve 15 to 20 kW or even 50 kW. 48 volts is below the level that is considered safe without special protective measures.

Notably, 48V batteries are much safer than their 12V counterparts. This safety advantage stems from the reduced current draw of 48V systems. Lower current requirements not only minimize the risk of overheating but also alleviate strain on all electrical components within the system.

48V systems have the benefit of increasing power to components without raising the current - minimizing copper, which requires expensive cabling and a loss in transmission. 48V is competent enough in handling EV components without compromising fuel-economizing strategies.

Why do cars have 48V?
Due to the four times higher voltage level, a 48V machine can recuperate and significantly more kinetic energy. It then reliably supplies high-performance consumers and enables additional driving functions such as comfort start, boost and coasting. At the same time, 48V is a low enough to be non-hazardous to humans.
