You mentioned this in a backyard video the other day. The Zentnerds must have all watched it as it was number one on my suggested watch list today! Kathy and Nancy sure doing a great job with the study group.

Time travel with a shovel! See Kirk Johnson and Ray Troll's "Cruisin' The Fossil Freeway" awesome book about ancient landscapes in the USA. They also have a great CD of silly songs about their travels!

One of my favorite things to do is pass on Nick’s knowledge of the great NW and it’s incredible geologic features to others. Some can’t handle the truth when it comes to explaining these formations in terms of deep time but oh well. Many others still appreciate it.

Nothing is as constant as change. We are facing a major climatic change. Our grandchildren will experience it with full force unless we manage to achieve the Paris climate targets.

Hi Nick. Was this area of Washington State near where it is now 56 million years ago?

The North american plate is moving west-southwest, so eastern Washington was likely somewhat east or northeast of the current yellowstone hotspot.

Wouldn't a plant or animal need to be covered immediately in order to be fossilized? If they weren't covered immediately it seems to me they would decompose after a very short amount of times, just a couple of weeks. Intact skeletons and plants had to have either been killed and covered by a mud flow or died and then immediately covered.

Nick talks about hot swampy stuff. When leaves fall into a swamp, they indeed get covered immediately in water. So they're able to build up layers and don't decay.
