Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Having grew up in Coldstream for most of my younger years, I was given the privilege of becoming the Coldstreamer in 2002. This was a great honour and one of the many tasks was to lead a mounted cavalcade from the town to the memorial cross on Branxton hill to pay homage to the dead of both nations. One comment that continues to return from the cross is just how eerily silent it is there. We then cut a sod of earth from the hillside, then wrap it up in a saltire to be carried back over the border to the sight of the monastery where a small ceremony is held and " flowers of the Forrest" is sang. Great video !

Reminds me of a 'saying' my old man used to be fond of... "If at first ye dinnae succeed..., pull yer foreskin o'er yer heid" lol. Personally i regret never having the chance to come back to the homeland of my forefathers... So much family history to be 'rediscovered'. I grew up here in Australia on stories from my nanna that facinated me but i now believe to be her way of 'inspiring a love of history' through fantasy... So much convoluted information it's impossible to find the truth without going to the source. In one account an ancestor was an 'aide de camp' to RTB in the infamous cave with the spider spinning it's web (origin of the above correct saying ie; try, try again). Another is family tree inscribed in the stones of Edinburgh Castle. Ties to Scot nobility but having to change name to Drysdale to avoid discovery and persecution. Even as far out as curses by a witch to explain the 'irony' of there only ever being one male child born to bear the line past a certain point (of which i am the last and childless)... Facinating stuff for a kid but leaves me confused as hell to the truth now i'm an adult...

Another superb exposition, this time of one of the greatest military tragedies in Scottish history. The butchers bill was just phenomenal. I find the late mediaeval attitude to chivalry intriguing - they were just as fond of looting, rape, murder and theft as any of their descendants, and successors, but going out of your way to lose would be totally incomprehensible to a Norman king! A poignant mention at the end, amity is better than emnity, ploughshares are better than swords, or perhaps tractors beat tanks. Either way, your humanism and decency shine through in these horrid times. Thank you!

To her unguarded nest the weasel Scot

Your rugby analogy is so perfect. I'm an Englishman and a Bath man, yet I spent time living in Gloucestershire. I played many gigs in Gloucester whilst wearing my Bath Rugby shirts and there would often be comments like ‘you're brave’, yet the same people would applaud the show and drink with me after. I've played in Glasgow and Edinburgh in an England shirt too, and again there's been a bit of joking about it and then good camaraderie right after.
I also need to say that I love the videos you do Bruce, for their historical facts and for their humour. You're simply fantastic to watch and listen to and I'm really grateful to you for posting these. You do an amazing job of storytelling and I'm glad UA-cam led me to your videos some time ago.

You are quite correct, Culloden was a British army versus an army comprised of French, Irish and Scots. However, and I am from south of the border, a large number of Scots refer to it as England v Scotland. I even found this in Edinburgh at a history talk in one of the squares. The students who were giving it were quite unaware until I mentioned it. Is this how the education system in Scotland prefers it?

What can I take to unhook from the habit of watching these programs; I have paperwork to do before I die? Sir Bruce, another hypnotic narrative, fortunately aided with text. It's a wee bit small, but better than listening only. The favorable points of this program were to tell me about that Battle, and the story of the song I have listened to many times. I have been to most of the venues of your programs, but not Floddon (spelling?) Field. Your programs are far too academically dense to watch but once, however. I need to watch them a couple of times. Also, I share that they are as distracting and diverting me from my problems as must occur during a game of golf. I don't think about anything but your video work and your comments. R. As an American with many Scottish ancestors, I can not express my appreciation for these videos. Bruce, your great talent for storytelling makes these videos so much better than listening to a normal history documentary. Your choices of content is great as well. I think that many present day Scots struggle to understand the fascination that Americans have with Scottish history. The USA is a very young country compared to the European countries. Many Americans only have 200-300 years of history in America, but their ancestors were in Scotland for a thousand years or more. We don’t have the luxury of having a lot of history out our front doors. We don’t have castles or ancient battlefields to visit. Things that modern day Scots take for granted are totally new to most Americans. We have much more family history in Scotland and other European countries than we have in America. Thanks for taking the time to share Scottish history with us in such a way that only a true Scot can.

It’s one of those places with an eerie atmosphere and you can tell that something awful happened there. “To the brave of both nations” on a small stone cross is pretty much the only indication that there was a major battle though. I have a distant grandfather who died in flodden. I love Scottish history and enjoy the way you tell it. You bring it to life. My great grand parents left glasgow after ww1 and came to the states and made way to the west coast. Where we still are today. Scotland is my biggest dream To go there. To never return to America would be fantastic. Clan Hay. Serva Jugum. A Hay! A Hay!

I was there 3 weeks ago with my youngest laddie. We walked round the entire new path (with excellent signage and info stops), up the hill to James' starting point then back down again. Walking over where the worst of the slaughter took place was a strange feeling. It's a very emotive place.

Excellent . A disaster that is not so well documented as Culloden which was really a battle of religion . This battle they said affected every house in Scotland and also led to the Flodden Wall around Edinburgh .

the scottish population was about half a million in 1500, meaning about 6-8% of scotland's entire population was camped on that hill that day. the sheer scale of it in terms of demographics must have been unprecedented, honestly mental. cheers bruce

Lord Bruce, yet another EPIC video! Great scenery, well-scripted and edited, as usual! Especially liked your military history, high ground vs marshes; pikes vs axes, etc! How gruesome! And the bit about Thistles with Rose Thorns! Ah, and with daffodils getting pushed up by who-knows what unlucky sole buried in the fields there!

Fantastic video, as is all of your work. Whilst there is a always fascination in these glorified battles, I think current events remind us of the futility of war and the evils of the rich spending the blood of the poor. I think you got that point across really well with the rugby analogy.

A'reyt Bruce. Welcome back to England. I had always heard this as being the victory of billhooks against traditional Scottish spearmen. The French pike and the outmanoeuvre onto more suitable terrain is very interesting. Ruthless modern English against romantic Scottish heroics also given a twist with the "I won my fight" bit too.
Good rugby analogy at the end, though I imagine there will be many of the football supporters both sides of the border wanting to see them meet in the World Cup.
I tend to like the way Wales have done so well in that sport recently by channelling their national pride on the pitch and I have enjoyed watching them on S4C on satellite, in a language that seems to repeat "Bale" every sentence.

It was actually SWISS pike in design. The Scots army was trained in the new European tactics of the time; 'Lansknecht' ('lancing knight'). The Swiss were the masters of it. It involved forming up an army into four or five small-ish phalanxes ('schiltrons' in Scots) of footsoldiers, and charging them at the opposing lines of foot troops and using the pikes to knock them off their feet. Traditionally, Scots had fought in three larger schiltrons, which were less mobile. The new tactics should have worked as the English bills and halberds had a shorter reach and so shouldn't have been able to stave off the schiltrons. But the Scots weren't used to trying to move en masse at the fairly quick trot the Lansknecht approach demanded, and the wet ground made it very difficult to keep in formation. They schiltrons had become disordered, barely-moving masses by the time they engaged the English billsmen, who were able to 'chop' the ends off the pikes with ease.

@@martinodoni8943Thank you for the detail. As a wargamer, I used to sit watching films and pick up all the bits of detail like this. After a few years you realise they do not care and just go with it. Spartan helmets and also their shields with patterns instead of lambda used to bug me most.

Many of the men from the Borders towns died at Flodden. In 1514 Surrey returned to sack the Border towns on route to Edinburgh. The English Army camped a mile outside Hawick at Hornshole. The youth of Hawick launched a night ambush on the English and caused such carnage that the English Army had to retire back to England. The Hexham Priory flag was captured and brought to Hawick and is celebrated every year at the Hawick Common Riding. Check it out.😊
