Throughout RuneScape’s History, there has been a number of times where the game was rollbacked. These were either caused by Jagex making a bug so bad it was deemed the only fix, or because the players did something so catastrophic the servers came screaming to a halt. These rollbacks were eventually used to commit massive dupes on both OSRS and RS3. In today's video, we explore the history of these rollbacks leading up to those dupes.

I remember when dungeoneering came out before osrs, they did an update and for all runes crafted in dungeons you got INSANE xp. I remember getting to 90 within the 30 minutes before they shut the servers down 😂 fantastic video!
I ran into a similar glitch when archeology came out. While smithing mattocks, if you were skulled, you would get around 70k xp per mattocks. Confused the hell out of me when I saw the xp I gained from one inventory of bronze mattocks
@@Minion777 you didn't need to be skulled, I got 98-105 smithing in less than 10mins with no skull on release

12:47 back in the day jagex used to tell you to manually log out before updates because you could potentially lose items.

I once had my rangers rolled back on my Ironman and it was deviating. Luckily only took me 32 more medium clues to get the ranger boots back. It was during the Twisted Bow glitch.

Lets be real though, even when people abuse bugs to this level they'll do nothing to punish them. I was locked out of game for twice as long as the elite dungeon bug abusers and they got to keep their wealth as well. It seems nowadays though the bugs are often rather serious and end in dupes or huge xp gains.
That's just cause you don't hear about them until they've made lasting impact

Plot twist...maybe they did ruin the economy...sometimes reality doesn't set in right away on these markets. Everything's dirt cheap and there are enough twisted bows in the game for just about everyone to have one. You'll never know how much damage that really did.
plot twist...cox has been out since the beginning of 2017 and is constantly farmed by egyptians (the front page of cox is littered with them) and vennys who run anything from trios to scaled cm raids where you pay the host 10% of your split if you get a purp. The economy is shit because there are half the amount of players online now vs when mobile was released. Wdr also removes the step of people new to cox getting their shit pushed in when learning vs being hard carried no matter how terrible you do.

It's not just the high end items. A dex is like 11m from cox. 3 man split wont even pay for a bond. It isn't a very complex or hidden problem. Half of the playerbase are venezuelans or bot farms gold farming at cox, vorkath, zulrah, nightmare, black chins, any high end profitable method that doesn't take skill. You can look at the graphs of items and see when multi revs no longer became viable for venes how that impacted the prices of other items to track it with publicly available numbers. Zulrah scales dropped almost 50% in a few days for example. But yeah... it's definitely duping.
these up to date bug/glitch abuse history lessons of rs are always fun to watch. Theres so much normal/casual players dont know what happens behind the scenes. Also the vast amount of people who dont play this game, but just look for ways to abuse and profit from it.

I remember the first roll-back, I remember loosing a good sum of gold. Don't remember how much, or what happened. But I remember being mad about the roll-back.

I was there for the twisted bow glitch. I was going to the duel arena to chuck a cheeky little 100 Miller and I won. I already had a twisted bow but I needed more gear to boss effectively. As soon as I got out of my fight I noticed pink letters on the ground and my mouth dropped wide fucking open when I noticed it said “twisted bow” so I quickly clicked that shit and obtained it. I was telling everyone I knew that I just picked one up and so I go to the GE and I put one up for sale and it sold for fucking 700m and I was pissed because I was confused and so I started looking at what people were saying and started noticing everyone had tbows so I knew something went horribly wrong. People kept telling me I had a fake bow lol but I had two. I miss the game but it created a nasty gambling habit. But I’ll never forget turning 100m into 10b. Fucking legendary!
I’d like to see RuneScape you tubers advertise Roth IRAs, since we are “getting older” and should look out for our future! Maybe weeble or Mone finance will make a deal?

I heard a story that I don't know if it's true or not, but apparently someone realized super quickly about the glitch and bought out all the bonds in the GE for a crazy price because he had multiple max cash stacks, he got years of membership because the bonds aren't effected by the roll back once you activate your game time... pretty wild if its true.

I remember knowing about the tbow glitch but being too scared to go grab one. I thought I may be banned.
I remember the tbow roll back because my mate finally got a dwh after killing 1800 shamans or something stupid so he lost that tweeted mod ash about it then he said about the roll back being required and hopefully he will be able to get it back. My mate got over 2.5k shaman kills and still didn't get dwh again he quit for a few months after that incident

I remember the ring of wealth glitch back in the day when corp would guaranteed drop a sigil if there was a whole group on lootshare there with RoWs on... They didn't do a rollback for that, and I can only imagine how much gp was created for that hour or so, and the spirit shields price never recovered. I'm glad they do rollbacks nowadays for horrible things that ruin the economy.

lost pet is not even the worst possibility there. its the items that take a lot of time to obtain like osrs twisted bow or the abomination cape of rs3 (or even worse the shadow egg from elite dungeon 3) that is the worst to loose during a rollback or if missing 1 3rd age/2nd age item for a clue log (Yes rs3 have several players that have finished of hard and elite clue scroll logs, no one is yet to finish of the master clue log there though. (the abomination cape is 1/12500 or 1/13 000 from a monster the shadow egg is 1/50 000 lucky charms used that you buy with dg tokens and its like 1/25 or 1/50 chance of killing a monster in elite dungeon 3 for triggering the charm, summoned monsters do not count on this) both the items is worth a lot of money because of rarity and not a lot of players grinding them out and might have an even higer street price than ge price because of how rarily they are traded. the egg is used to unlock a pet but is not part of any drop log, the cape is not part of a log either and cant be stored in poh so its more of a bragging item specialy on ironman accounts.

i really can't believe the rs3 thing was just a footnote here. The implications of a dupe like that going on for 5 days on that game are unbelievable. I can only imagine how many rares came into the game, pretty tragic

Rare prices are 5x of last year. It must've been mostly gp/shards.

Osrs team fixes important big but rs3 team doesn't care until players prove it van also happen in their version of the game
How did they patch it though? Did they make it theoretically impossible to dupe or lose items? Did they host all player data on a single server? Did they take out the possibility of being rolled back 15 minutes OR to last save point? Or did they just make it impossible or more difficult to crash the world with this particular method?
They fixed crashing not the duping

@@Impulse154 Jagex had to do a patch 6 months ago because people found another crash method & were abusing it with the intent to dupe. There's a video in the desc from Boolz, they alleged if you find a crash bug the dupe is still active

also 100b isn't enough to crash the games economy. Gold sellers can and do ;) actively buy these amounts from players like Sparc Mac ect with 50-100b+ and are able to then sell that amount off without dropping the price of gold more then 3 cents per mil. Very cool economics

Can we allll agree that the ardy knight coin pouch update is by far one of the dumbest updates? It doesn't change the auto clicking, and if you're 94 and never fail there's a way to set it so you can just hit f1 and open you inv up so your auto clicker is hovering right over the coin pouch and bam you never stop auto clicking.
I'm guessing someone forgot a symbol before = with the first bug, where for example "newValue
yep jagex described in detail how the issue occured. It was a junior programmer but no one was looking over his code very strictly I guess
