  • The investigation of a "crank, but no start" symptom in a 2003 Chevy Cavalier with a 2.2L Ecotec engine begins in part one of this video series. View the introduction to the problem and what we found when the valve cover came off. The engine is rotated to the top dead center position as well. The Ecotec engine is found on many four cylinder GM cars worldwide, such as Cobalt, Cavalier, HHR, Malibu, Alero, Grand Am, Sunfire, Saturn L series as well as some Opel and Vauxhall cars and more. I have an 04 Chevy Classic that uses the 2.2 Eco. I believe my chain broke going about 45mph down the road. Car immediately shut off and when it's attempting to start it sounds like metal hitting the cover where the chain is. I haven't touched it since it busted, I'm fearful of engine damage. Thank you for this video series, as I'm about to watch it and pray I don't have a toasted engine.

      i had the same feeling doing this repair. All you do is put on new chain and guides and try to start it and see what happens.

    I just bought one of these.
    All of the forms i read online warn me of the Timing Chain after 100k Miles. Mine has over 200k & it is still running.. But I do not dare to drive it very far until I get this chain looked at.

    Hey, my car has had all the warning signs of the timing chain needing to be replaced. Popped the cover off to diagnose and the chain is clean and tight.... What else could it possibly be if the chain is perfect but the car sounds exactly like the car in your video?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  8 років тому +1

      The chain is tight, but is the timing correct? I would hand rotate the engine and check that. Make sure you are getting gas. The fuel pump failed on this same Cavalier a year earlier.

    Hi David, great series of videos. I'm doing this same repair on an 03 Cavalier as well. I'm stuck at the crankshaft bolt removal. I don't want to remove it without ensuring I'm at TDC on cylinder 1 on the exhaust stroke. But, how do I verify that if the indicators on the timing sprockets have lost relationship with the cams?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic

      I did try to show that in the video as the same thing happened to the one I worked on. I also have a video on identifying valve and cam positions on one cycle of that engine. I hope it helps. ua-cam.com/video/cfMfVi9nL_A/v-deo.html

    Hi! Help! Mine too crank but no start. I change the tensionner without removing the valve cover and it skip one or 2 teeths before activating. Now, is it safe to turn the cam or crank in order to time it when installing a new kit? Can i turn the crankshaft colockwise and counter clockwise?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  5 років тому +1

      Just don't try to run the car and you should avoid risk of damage. Just turn it manually and always clockwise as this is the normal run direction.

    Hi David, I just screwed up big time doing a water pump replacement. I didn’t use the tool correctly and the gear for the pump came loose on startup. The car ran perfectly fine before. Do you know of a fix for this that doesn’t involve pulling all of the timing components?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  2 роки тому +2

      I didn't do the water pump (not a great idea). I'm thinking you're probably going to have to take it most of the way back down but I know how far. I've done stuff like this too and it totally sucks.

    is getting to tdc important here? and do I need to be on a compression stroke?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  8 років тому

      Yes you do need to be at TDC because that's where all the timing marks on the engine and chain line up. It is done on the exhaust stroke on cylinder one

    • @davesmale7507
      @davesmale7507 4 роки тому

      @@TheOriginalMechanic Not sure if you'll see this question, but how would I find TDC on the exhaust stroke if the chain has jumped so the sprocket indicators no longer point to the correct positions?

    • @slowpoke96Z28
      @slowpoke96Z28 4 роки тому

      Dave Smale TDC is dependent on piston position, which is a function of crankshaft position. You don’t use cam sprockets to find tdc. They only spin at 1/2 crank speed, and if the valve timing has jumped, the sprockets could be anywhere when the #1 piston is at TDC. This engine has a keyed crank pulley, so it can be used be lining up its mark with the mark on the timing chain cover. On a different engine, you may need a degree wheel or do some disassembly to get to a point you’re able to reference the cranks position vs the block.

    Could use a steady camera hand from a second person otherwise very informative, I have a 05 but I also have white milky goo in the oil cap and condensation in the cap and breather and air filter compartment, Any Idea why that would be happening.

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  7 років тому

      The milky white goo could be to coolant getting into the oil. On most engines this means a bad head gasket. If the engine is losing coolant a repair may be needed sooner than later.

      I had same issue with my 2006 HHR. It was creamy looking gunck in my air intake duct, almost as thick as peanut butter. it was oil and water mixture, I took duct off and dumped a bit of water out. the water was from condensation build up from clogging. I removed intake manifold to clean the port thats inside. I also removed valve cover and cleaned the under side of it... problem solved!! for a girl I didn't do too bad :)

    Honestly, I think I'd rather pay a shop to do this job on my '05 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2, how much do you think it would be? I was told by the 1 shop I checked with $900? What's your opinion? BTW I liked and subscribed, great details.
