- Part 2: • Greatest Golf Collapse...
Golf has time and again proven itself to one of the most mentally challenging sports. It not only affects the everyday player, but also affects some of the greatest players to ever the game. In an instant, a player can fall apart. These are some of those players and their stories, I hope you enjoy.
~Thanks for watching! Please subscribe and like for more videos if you enjoyed. ~
~ I have the utmost respect and appreciation for all of these players and I am in no way trying to diminish all that they have accomplished in their careers. I am simply trying to display just how difficult golf can really be and how mentally demanding it is. ~

“THE MASTERS: Greatest Shots and Moments" and my Tiger Woods Comeback video were both taken down from UA-cam last week, and my channel got hit with two copyright strikes. Because of this, I won't be able to re-upload them here without risk of having my channel terminated. Instead, I have uploaded the videos to Vimeo so that anyone who wants to watch them can view them over there. Thanks for the support! Sorry to be so offtopic but does anybody know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account?
I somehow forgot my login password. I would love any help you can give me!
@Immanuel Forest Instablaster :)
@Khari Kyle I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Khari Kyle DAMN IT REALLY WORKED :O Just got access to my IG account details after about 30 mins by using the site.
Thanks so much you really help me out :D
@Immanuel Forest No problem xD
This hurts and I've been there. I had a solid 2-stroke lead going into the final hole and was playing well. My first shot hit the windmill blade squarely and bounced back. Second shot made it through, but clipped the dinosaur foot. My third circled the cup, as did the fourth and the fifth was short. My red ball finally dropped in six. My wife wound up winning the round and I haven't played Adventure Golf since. I'll likely carry the scars for a long time.
😂
Well done sir
OG still the best
😆
You mother..😂
What's the big deal?
I play like this all the time.
I would be happy to play like that 😁
The difference is they're Pros.
@@martywarner1779 i think the joke would have gone over your head even if you were on a ladder.
18661873 Lmao! Pro’s get humanized now and then. We’re just used to it.
You're NOT alone!
When you choke in a team sport, you can hide behind others. When you choke in an individual sport, you face the music alone.
Richard Oki has id rather choke in an invidual sport, id feel bad for the teammates
Much much worse to choke in a team sport. It's not about hiding. it's how many others your choke impacts.
It’s worse in a team sport. It still impacts every individual.
Richard Oki literally the music. The music of this UA-cam video you’re now in
Blame the greens
The Mcilroy shot on the 10th at Augusta always brings a smile to my face. Just after he hit the stroke, one of the announcers asked, "Is that out of bounds?", and his partner answered, "I don't know, I've only come to this tournament for 23 years and I've never seen anyone hit a shot over there." Cracks me up every time.
I remember watching it live, and when he dropped his shoulders after the missed par putt on the first green, I just knew that it was going downhill.
@@KasperViggoJensen Yep, same thing happened in the 2018 Masters, when his 2 foot putt for eagle on the 2nd wasn't even close. He was obviously dejected and from then on in placed no pressure on Reed.
Poor dude started crying on the tee. I'll never forget that. Augusta is Rory's kryptonite.
The music makes it sound like all of humanity has died and there is one lone child looking across the wreckage.
D Man-G hilarious
That's how I feel after every round of golf.
Oh gosh...funny as hell!

Chris Blackwell lol
The announcer for the van de velde collapse is absolutely perfect 😂
That's Peter Aliss, and he is the best in the business.
The great Peter Alliss; both he and his father Percy Alliss played Ryder Cup golf...
“This is just unnecessary”
“Somebody please go in there and stop him”
Aliss is the best ever
For the lads who already have multiple majors, my heart does not feel as heavy, but for the lads who had this one shot at eternal glory, I truly feel for them. Golf is as unforgiving of a game as there is, and if one can deduct lessons from this game as opposed to regret and anger, it can be positive fuel for generations to come. The thing about golf is that it doesn’t come down to a “bad call” or another player blocking your shot, it is simply just what lives between our ears. Our minds. For many of these shots, these magnificent players could do with their eyes closed, but when the mind decides to tell you that everything is on the line, we simply choose to make things much more difficult. I wish you all the best, and the next time you hit a bad shot, find what lesson you can take from it, as opposed to giving more of yourself in the form of anger and regret. There is always glory to be had, even in the darkest of times.
Damn that's deep
I think it's fuggin funny.
Thank you. Alien Zord Falcon. And you as well my good friend.
This is my favorite comment on UA-cam. Thank you.
I'm paraphrasing, but Jones said the toughest course was the 6 inch one between the ears.
Jean van de Velde is by far the most dramatic. He had it sealed, just had to make a double. The way he goofed, the put he made to still go extra holes, the mental collapse in that playoff when he realized what had happened. And the complete ending of his promising career after that.
He got so lucky on the drive…from that point he could hit wedge twice an bogey the hole and walk away. Absolute insanity.
If I had been his caddie I would have taken his driver and 3 wood on the tee and broken them over my knee
Van de Velde was a complete idiot there. He (or his caddy) had a chance after the tee shot to give his head a wobble. It was all so needless & avoidable, what a prat.
Van de Velde was up by 5 at the start of the day too. Also, two wild stories: his playing partner, Craig Parry, holed from the same bunker Van de Velde was in. He told Jean, "I'll show you how to make it". Then, a few months later, Van de Velde came back and played the entire hole with just his putter...he made a 6, which would have been good enough to win the open
Not a good video to watch before playing a round of golf
Lol
Or is it?
I think it is perfect to watch. If they f-up, then so can I.
Probably gonna happen anyway
I’m literally going to play a round tomorrow 😂😂

How do you ever get over missing a 2 footer to win the Masters?
There was a guy that would have won, but signed an incorrect scorecard. The penalty cost him the Masters title. Can't remember his name at the moment.
@@randym9147 Roberto De Vicenzo 1968 Masters and it wouldn't have won him the tournament, it would put him in an 18-Hole Playoff for the Green Jacket.
@@NickWuebker Hmmm... that sounds familiar; I think you might be right!
Ha. You don't.
You quit golf and take up drinking. Only way I can think of.
announcer: "Adam Scott's gonna be scarred for life"
Adam Scott: *wins Masters 2 years later*
2 majors and only 9 months later. He did OK yes. But I remember watching this live, Ernie made nothing all day until 18, and Adam’s 4 straight bogeys with no water hazards.....what are the odds? One major at this stage of his career, nearing 40, is definitely underachieving IMO. Beautiful swing, can’t putt
There will forever be an asterisk beside Scott's Masters win. *anchored long putter
He’s still scared. The only reason he hasn’t won many more is his putting and that’s why he lost there. He finally broke they but the difference in a career with two different majors rather than one is huge. One can be attributed to a hot streak. Two different majors is a whole different game.
@eagle boy Actually, it's in Augusta.
Should have had many more majors, he is scarred, his putting is not all there.
Van de Velde's was absolutely heartbreaking. I remember watching that with my father, both in utter disbelief.
his wife could do nothing but laugh - he chose the wrong day to play the joker
tbh I don't consider it a huge choke. Hitting driver wasn't dumb cuz he explained it was his best club all week and what happens if you hit an iron in the rough? On his second shot he got REALLY unlucky that it hit the one part of the stand to send it back. If it's one inch in any othe rdirection, he gets an easy drop and an up and down for bogey
Never seen anyone more incapable of stopping his descent into golf hell. He kept digging it deeper and deeper. Driver off 18th was a bad call.
@@billhouchens7439 not really. His blunder was trying to hit it over the water on the shot after hitting into the grandstand
I mean objectively speaking the driver choice didn't hurt him. It was risky but had nothing to do with the ultimate score.
It's a shame that the 1996 Masters will always be remembered for Greg's collapse, when Faldo's 67 is one of the all time greatest rounds in golf history. When you consider the circumstances, the pressure etc, he played a flawless round. That 2 iron on 13 will be forever etched in my mind
That was Faldo, pressure never bothered him, he kept his head whenever he needed to in high pressure situations when others lost theirs
Absolutely 100% it was Faldo's play that turned the screws on Norman..
Sadly it’s very rare he gets the credit for such a stellar round😡
Lawrie's 67 in the 1999 British Open was even better
Willett's 67 in the 2016 Masters was a great round too
Falco won at least 1/2 of his majors when others choked. Way overrated, and no- his 67 wasn't one of the best rounds ever.
Faldo was the real deal, never bottled it when it mattered. Also completely changed his swing mid career. Legend in my book.
When Van de Velde blew the Open Championship 20 years ago, I knew we would never hear from him again.
This is just BRUTAL to watch
Van de Velde was the worst in my opinion. All he had to do was put his ego in check and lay up on the 18th, and glory was his. He basically ruined his career in one hole. He never came back from that.
I'll never forget how van de velde blew off his loss as no big deal in the post match interview, then hearing Jack Nicklaus reaction to it. He was pissed at him for saying losing a major is no big deal. Never seen Jack that mad
Was Van de Velde really good before that? Winning regular tourneys n such? Just no majors?
Yeah this one for sure is the worst ever.
AvgDude To be fair, Lawrie never came back from winning, either.
But he'll always be remembered... 🏌️♂️🏌️♂️
This is the best golf instruction video ever made. I suffer deeply from this as I imagine most golfers do - accept your mistakes and move on. And also accept that sometimes your swing goes to the Bahamas for a few days. That's golf!!
Watching this makes me remember Woods taking 1 iron off the tee on 18 at Pebble in that Open where he double lapped the field. Even at the end, he played the percentage. The very best never let down their guard or discipline.
Jean Van De Velde should have taken a lesson from Tiger in 1999.
i saw Norman's collapse live.
never watched anything that painful before.
not only was 6 strokes ahead, but lost by 5 strokes.
nick faldo said "it was the only time ive felt sorry for someone ive beaten"
norman was never the same after that.
My first memory of watching golf is the 1996 Masters, so maybe I feel a little sense of....I'm not sure what, but I feel compelled to go to bat for Greg Norman.
History will forget how good a player Norman was.
While the 1996 Masters is undoubtedly what he'll be most remembered for, he won a few events past that; he also had wins taken from him far more than given away. He was also the best golfer on the planet for most of the early 90's.
I was a huge Faldo fan and remember placing little bets with my brother-in-law (who was rooting for Norman) throughout that last round. I won every bet, as Norman did have a tendency to do that type of thing.
Faldo was the player you would pick to play for your life on the biggest stages. He often kept his head when everyone else was losing theirs.
@@Nufleg Faldo was 6 behind after the third round and i had £50 on him at 5/1. Felt he had a chance bearing in mind the disasters of Norman over the years . one of my fewish successes gambling although 5/1 in reality should have been at least double that
I saw it too; it was brutal. Norman was my man at the time.
Tiger has held the outright 54-hole lead 45 times in his PGA Tour career. He went on to win 43 of them, good for a 95.6 percent clip. For context - over the last three PGA Tour seasons, players with an outright 54-hole lead have gone on to win 39.7 percent of the time.
good stat
An he has never come from behind to win a Major championship in his career. That is odd for someone who won 14 majors. Basically, if he's not leading or Tied for the lead by the end of the 3rd round in a major, it's a 99.9% chance he will not win.
title of the video is "Greatest Golf Collapses and Chokes of All Time"
skateski but he choked away his chane at being the GOAT
henry manahan you know who you didnt see in this video? Tiger Woods
Dustin Johnson gets his green jacket in redemption.
He also won the US Open in 2016, one year after three-putting 18.
He earned that win
In November master’s dose not count 😢😢😢😢😢
I was in the Atlanta international airport watching the masters when Jordan Spieth had that melt down. Everyone in the lounge was speechless. Even non golf fans felt the pressure for him.
So my boss walks up to me and says, "Are you watching golf??" and, "Why are you crying??" ...awkward
haha this is brilliant 😂
hahahaha
Ha! Well said! :)
Van de Velde was the most painful to watch
Iwas at Royal Lytham the following year and watched him play most of his practice round alone. He was gracious enough to autograph my ticket though. it's odd that for all of the muddied thinking this guy putted really well.
Streelmans 8 on the 18th was brutal to watch too.
At least that was just a regular tour event though.
Thought I'd seen everything, but that VDV meltdown is probably the most noteworthy choke of all time in any sport lmao. He was humbled to the point of taking off his socks and shoes. That's great.
Greg Norman‘s meltdown. At the masters, was the first time in my life I ever watched golf. I was an athlete at that time I thought Golf was for old men but after watching that masters I realized it’s the hardest game in the world and I’ve never stopped playing it.
It was the first Major and PGA event I watched. The only ones I watched before that was Tiger’s amateur titles. Norman combusted and I thought, I don’t think this is how this game is played. 😅
I had a round going the other day that would make this video. Even par with two holes to play...finished +12
Not as bad, but I was +4 after 15....finished +9....and that included a Birdie on 17. I didn't even do the math after the round.
I was up 7 with 9 to play for my flight's club championship and I choked and lost in a playoff.
We truly don't care about your round...not even one little bit. Take that back, I care enough to tell you that we all don't care. It was a miracle that you had played even par to that point. Your true colors showed on the final two holes, so the only surprising thing is that you did not melt down sooner.
Dar Foggy Damn that's horrid. I'd be in suicide watch
That's awesome levels of bad. But I can top it lol.
The thrill of victory. The agony of defeat.
Worst collapse I ever watched live had to be Greg Norman at the 1996 Masters. It actually made me feel ill just watching it on TV. Momentum in sports is an amazing thing. It can turn quickly and when it does it is almost impossible to stop.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Norman’s meltdown, as well as the ‘87 Masters when Mize made the miracle chip at 11 in the playoff
Golf is really hard. EVERYTHING, all 46 aspects of your swing have to be right, in sync, and you can’t really think about it. Seeing pros struggle makes me feel okay when I can’t hit the fairway to save my life.
Are there really 46 aspects
I find this interesting as a differentiator for the absolute top flight of the greatest golfers vs the second tier greats. Notably absent are Nicklaus, Woods, and Hogan.
How good was hogan ?
Palmer is on here, absolutely an all time great by any definition of the word
Snead and Palmer were both top-tier all-time greats. Worsham really pulled a scummy move on Snead by making an issue of who was away with that putt in the '47 US Open.
Think you nailed it. Pretty much the top three ever (I think they're kind of at a tie for GOAT)--and they were just mentally tougher. The other two that, I think, round out the top 5, Jones and Hagen, also had no notable chokes, at least as far as I'm aware.
Jack going +1 on the final 9 at the 1971 Masters ... Tiger shooting 75 on Sunday at the 2009 PGA Championship ... Hogan's missed two-footer on 18 in the 1946 Masters ... just because they didn't include those instances in the video, doesn't mean that they were immune ...
Nick Faldo was the beneficiary of two classic Sunday collapses at the Masters. To Faldo's credit, he carded two phenomenal rounds on both Sundays.
All the greats are in this video. Good lesson as to what we remember them for, not so much the bad rounds
Tiger woods isn’t though
Dom Wings his choke in 2009 at the PGA could be on here. Really Tiger’s only choke of his entire career. He’s only ever lost 1 playoff, all the way back in 1996 so it was definitely not a choke!
Jack, also known as the GOAT, never chocked!!
Jack Nicklaus won 18 majors but eve more amazingly came in 2nd 19 times. He must have blown a lead at least once!
Is no greater game in the world, only one person to blame in such intense moments
James Harrity yeah, the caddy!
The guy that screams get in the hole in the middle of your swing/putt.
James Harrity yes the caddie!
The God of Golf, y'mean?
MrOitoyboy lol
An old boy at my local golf course said some wise words to me a few years back, "If we played well all the time we'd all be pros".
i wish i had sad music playing when im lying 7 on a par 3
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Been there also.
Man #12 at Augusta really is no joke especially on Sunday.
It’s the wind. As you saw Tiger knew that with that wind long left/middle is the play. Every shot to the right of that pin not perfect is water bound. Happens every year.
Tiger would have hit the clubhouse before water there.
You are better off aiming for the bunker, at least you are safe.
Everyone in range of tiger in 2019 hit the water on 12, it almost looked like it was on purpose so tiger could win and solidify his comeback. Conspiracy, yes, but the Tiger effect is very very real. Everyone out there makes more money when tigers in the field!
Les Moore yeah that Sunday pin placement is just SO inviting, the pros understand on 12 if you hit that extra half of a club to keep you on dry land, you could easily end up on the a lip of that bunker on the backside. Where It’s extremely easy to make a 6 or 7 after you hit one a little bc of a bad lie. Ask Jeff Maggert, he had a 5 shot lead going to final round in 03. Takes a triple on 1, then fights back and is tied for the lead and then hits one deep on 12 and then hits through the green back into the water on 12. Has to walk back across the water to drop, makes 6, Loses by 2 shots.😬
Spieth's collapse is certainly tempered by the fact that he is already a Masters champ, and he won The Open in a way that eliminates any doubt about his grit coming down the stretch IMO.
Brian Preece he did give up 5 strokes tho. He will win the masters again tho
A lot of these guys had won multiple majors prior to their collapses.
wreckim agreed. He’s had multiple tour wins including the open since then. His mental game is too strong
@@Brandon24whelan Agreed. His mental is amazing. It's his game that fails him. If it wasn't for his mind set he wouod have been a subpar golfer. Aside from his putting and sometimes shortgame... he misses like crazy.
Federico Russo yeah.. in 2015 he statistically was one of the best drivers on tour. Everything was clicking.. unbelievable year. What people don’t remember is along with his 5 pga tour wins (2 majors), he had also two other worldwide wins, and he also won the hero world challenge by over 10 shots. He was otherworldly that year
The challenge with golf. Even the best of the best can have meltdowns. When I’m out playing and fall apart, this helps me keep it in proper perspective.
“they played terribly-am 81 and an 84.” Sounds like a great day to me!!!
I’d LOVE to shoot that type of score. Tired of shooting in the low hundreds.
Poor Phil. I wanted him to win the 2019 US Open. He just won a tournament there right before that week.
@Zoe TheCat I think out of all the runner-ups at the US Open, 2006 at Winged Foot has to eat at Phil the most.
I thought quadrupal bogies were good. I have to rethink my whole game now.
Lol, better than quintuple bogeys
Greg Norman was always one of my all time favourites. Just a magnificent swing to watch.
And the biggest choker of all time.
Great player, but massively underachieving in majors. Should have won a lot more with that swing. Think his course management let him down in the big tournaments.
You might wanna add Francesco Molinari to the list after the 2019 Masters
Tiger woods was two shots back. Not nearly enough.
2 shots with 18 holes isnt much
Lol he couldn't handle Tiger mania
Um....no. He hit some bad shots but was never running away with it. One bogey in 54 holes, the law of averages, and Tiger, caught up
The Inroad I think it was A choke as he had one bogey in the first three rounds and then two doubles and two bogeys in the final round. He is one of the if not the best ball striker on the tour and it was very unlike him. I would say he choked.
Just what I wanted to see before my round today thanks
Speith's "collapse" is really a bump in the road. The guy won The Open, and was he ever tested on that final day...and passed it with flying colors. Willet has not really backed up that Masters with anything notable since.
I can't watch the Van de Velde thing...just too much.
Elmo Blatch Bad decision after bad decision
The irony is he will probably be remembered more for what happened than if he had made an ordinary par and won.
I heard he's still trying to land it on the green. Poor guy.
It was amazing to watch. I'll never forget it.
But it's so much better with Peter Aliss narrating.
There is no meltdown quite like Van de Velde's, but what makes that priceless is Peter Aliss's commentary.... the best golfing running commentary I've ever heard... I laugh out loud every time I listen to it... particularly when he says to "give him a large brandy" and "mop him down"...
The pain in Mickelson's face is real. Not everyone can take that much humiliation and keep his cool. I commend him for that.
Love the Van De Velde fist pump after sinking the triple bogey putt at 18.
I will go to my grave thinking that triple bogey putt is one of the greatest putts of all time.
I think it wasn't about still having a chance to win; I think it was because now he wouldn't have to die of shame. He was still a man. It was actually a great putt. And it actually says something about his character that he could do it.
Peter Allis at his finest.....”large brandy and mop him down” 😂😂
It’s a beautiful game for us when it’s going well, but it can tear your heart out when it isn’t
Peter Alliss with some of the greatest commentary ever with Van Der Velde.
This should be set to a comedy soundtrack not a funeral dirge. They're all multimillionaires for fuck sake haha
😂
Was there at Lytham 2012, was literally incomprehensible that Scott lost the championship, made all the wrong decisions down the stretch
An entire golf collapse compilation could be made from a single one of my rounds
Just got my autograph book out.Jack Nicklaus,Arnold Parmer,Gary Player,Lee Travino,Bob Charles,Nick Faldo,Tony Jacklin,Hale Irwin,Sam Torrence and many others. My late father took me to many golf tournaments in the 70's.Very happy times.
14:40 "Adam Scott's going to be scarred for life". 9 months later wins the Masters.
Crazy to think a lot of these guys are top50 all time. It can happen to anyone
Great video. Perfect soundtrack/background music.
Golf is first and foremost a game against oneself.
Phil even in defeat he gives a smile too the crowd! Not many do that, some can't even smile when winning!
There isn't a golfer who has ever played(even the absolute best) who hasn't been flat out embarrassed by the game at some point.
Most encouraging golf video on youtube
Norman is the king of chokes.
Glad that Adam Scott went on to win the Masters that next year. Classy dude
It's beyond comprehension how he was able to politely ask the camera not to get his face in that moment.
chaveznieves or he's chose a life of professional sport and if it wasn't for cameras he wouldn't be a millionaire
Likes the cameras when he holes a bunker and jumps up and belly bumps his BIG HEADED CADDY but when the chips are down no no get away camera's i dont want you today SOOKY SOOKY LA LA
Have a look at Phil whinging at the camera man for getting too close after losing to Rory in '14 for examples of how not to behave.
CONTROL.....
spieth is so soft
This video makes me anxious just watching it
And ever since that choke from Spieth he really has never been the same. That sport really fiddles with your mind.
The first one hurts. It's a 2 foot putt you don't play break on that putt. Be aggressive and put it in the hole
Brave talk from a keyboard jockey who probably has never broken 80...no one on this stream has the faintest idea of the pressure felt by these players...
@@robertdore9592 he is commemorating how the first one hurts, and he is explaining what he could have done instead which could have gotten him the win and you decide to be an asshole?
"you lucky little rascal"..................
This gives me hope;)
I think it's hilarious when Dustin Johnson chokes 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Played a 79 one day and a 102 the next day. Sometimes you just don't know why it doesn't wanna work...
odd music choise for this comedy gold xD
As someone mentioned, Doug Sanders. Also to complete the Nick Faldo hat trick, 1990 Ray Floyd Masters up 4 with 6 to play, including bogey on 18. Nick won his three Masters in historic fashion. He shot in the 60's each Sunday.
I hope you all enjoyed and thanks for watching! Let me know what video you want to see next!
Golf Focus , Shooter McGavin vs Happy Gilmore.
The rise and fall and rise (hopefully) of tiger woods
Excellent video's btw thank you for the uploads
I had 25 bucks on Johnson at 40:1 odds at Pebble Beach. Normally I spread it around on several players in majors, but I was certain he'd win. He had won twice at Pebble Beach in the regular tour event.
After 54 holes, I was looking pretty good...
Back in the day of the dunhill cup. Stood behind norman on the 18th at st. Andrew's. Dark skies up ahead, pulls out the persimmon with a sweet spot the size of a pinhead. His drive went for about 100 yards 20 feet off the ground, then the back spin kicked in and with the dark skies, it looked awesome.
Must say this video is absolutely hilarious 🤣
*Paul Lawrie 6:39
It was a typo.

Lol
Awesome! Lol
Jean Van De Velve
what am i looking for here?
In my lifetime the greatest in my memory are in this order, from least to worst: Rory (Masters), Spieth (Masters), Van de Velde, US Team in Ryder Cup, Greg Normn (Masters) -- Keep in mind that Norman was the best player in the world at the time, Van de Velde was having the week of his life.
‘Not right now please’ 😂😂😂
I love golf so much.
I love Nick Faldo's non-reaction to Hoch's miss.
Faldo got really lucky with two of his Masters wins. One guy missed a 2 foot putt, and Norman had a major meltdown.
He also won his second Masters in a playoff. Raymond Floyd (47yrs) had a 10-12 footer for the win - it was on target but terribly short. Two years in a row his opponent was putting for the major, but Faldo escaped and quickly made them pay.
Jason W first of all Faldo’s Sunday was good enough to catch Norman even without the collapse (Faldo beat him -5 to +6), but I’ll help you out and throw Paul Azinger’s choke at Muirfield in 1987 and John Cook’s choke at Muirfield in 92 on the list too, because the reason Faldo kept winning in this fashion was by design. Faldo’s whole strategy was play steady golf, playing for a particular score, and let the other guy make mistakes. Help him into it by not talking to him or even acknowledging his presence at all. We all know Faldo wouldn’t have missed the putt Hoch did.
Norman's meltdown was caused by Faldo's excellent 67 on the final day, pressure does funny things to people, professional or not. Floyd's second shot to 11 was caused by Faldo's arrow like, long tee shot and what had happened the previous year i.e PRESSURE. Faldo's up and down at 12 is THE BEST I've ever seen and to cap it off, his bunker shot at 10 in the playoff was sheer perfection leaving himself an uphill putt, unlike Hoch the previous year leaving his first putt short and downhill (that putt was way longer than it looked). The difference between Faldo and Hoch was course management at the right time not luck.
No player gets lucky when they win. They carded the lowest score, and their journey there, and their opponent's, doesn't matter. Paul Lowry really got ripped off in that 99 Open in terms of credit. Everyone just remembers it as Van de Velde's throwaway, but had Van de Velde gotten the triple on an earlier hole, everyone would remember that Lowry shot a 67 and started the day 11 back: greatest comeback in all Major history.
That's what Faldo did. He hovered over you like the Grim Reaper.
You were never safe against him. He held his nerve and the others didn't.
That's what great players do. Nicklaus, Woods, Faldo. They hold their nerve. There are no lucky wins in Majors.
The music is like that performed from "the moon" in The Truman Show - capturing the mood as it happens!!
I shed a tear
GOLF IS HARD.......
I don't consider any of these 'collapses' at all. You have good holes, you have bad holes, and it's just a matter of luck. I don't think these guys "lost their nerve" - they just didn't hit good shots when they needed to. Plenty of guys behind them are spraying the ball all over the place.
golf is definitely NOT won or lost based on "luck".
sure...there is a lucky bounce here or there, but when you lead by 4 with 3 to play, its "choking"....pure and simple.
and yeah.....normans loss in 96 was him trying to swallow a watermelon...whole.
My dick is hard.
I remember watching Phil LIVE. That was the hardest and most invested one I watchED
It's a cruel mistress. Nothing worse than about 6 players all stopping so you can take your shot and you chunk it!! Or the 1st tee queue? Felt less nerves when on trial at crown court!!!!
I feel SO SO sad for Van de Velde, EVERYTIME i see his tragedy......and, everytime i see his wife, dumb laughing, i freak out.....
The wife was a class act for John and the cameras. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was screaming on the inside.
They're French, and that gallic indifference allows them to put things in perspective. After all, it's only a stupid game.
love it :)
Cruel game , but we love it.
@1:55 for all of you who dreamed of playing like a Tour Pro ... you can!
LOL LOL LOL
The one that hurt the most for me was Jordan Speith, since he was my favorite golfer
That was a super sore one to take.
I still cant understand why he didnt play for the middle of the grren. He would have been short in the bunker at worst.
@@moosiethestaggie5100 same thing Norman did 20 years prior. Targeted the flag, found the creek
@@leifopstad2972 Im old enough to remember it well.
That was a tough one to watch at the time, even though I was rooting for Faldo.
Doesn’t hurt quite as much when you experience this every time you step on the course 😉
This is what makes golf great. It's up to the individual - and it ain't easy...!
