The watch media loves selling people on the idea that Panerai is dead. Fact of the matter is they're still selling a ton of watches. The local boutique in my city crushed it during this past holiday season.

Fully agree. There are waiting lists for many models now and boutiques opening everywhere. For a dead brand, that's a strange strategy.

Closed case backs to hide undecorated movements that don't hack. Panerai did another Brooklyn edition to the 2020-2022 PAM 1312 & 1313. Look up Perezscope article on the cost cutting and use of ETA movements (when they still call them in-house).

I would agree about the more contemporary look of the newer Luminors. I'm currently looking to add a PAM 1313/1316 to make it a trio of Panerai in my collection. IMO the 44mm suits the watch better, but hey, if you're a little smaller of wrist, then it is nice to have a 40mm option out there.

I'm pulling for Panerai but here is the problem. If I'm looking for a tool watch, there are a ton of better options out there. Some of the options are much less expensive and have a better movement as well as better brand history. For example, a simple Omega Seamaster or a Tudor BB. Even Breitling has some cool dive watches (Heritage SuperOcean) that you can get for a lot less money. Panerai has a lot of work to do to justify their pricing.

      True

    • @bigmacdaddy1234
      @bigmacdaddy1234 2 роки тому +23

But if you want the look and feel of a Panerai, there is no substitute. Substituting a watch like a Tudor or Omega for a Panerai will never fill the void. You will always look down at your wrist and regret what you did. You bought the wrong watch. I have a PAM00112 with the sandwich dial and display case back and no other watch at that price point even comes close.

I never thought I'd end up with a Panerai. On a whim, I saw a ceramic model, which I thought was PVD. Note..I did not follow Panerai and had no idea of their line-up.
I generally steer clear of PVD and DLC because they scratch way too easy...when the sale person said it was ceramic, I tried it on. Instant ❤ at first sight. I stewed for a week before I ended up buying it...not at the AD, as they refused to negotiate a dime off list. I picked up the PAM01441 ceramic gmt and I wear it constantly. Of course, I have a 7.5" wrist, so it's perfect. The best part is my dog can't patina this one like she likes to do with my other steel models.
As far as a 40mm, I don't know...I kind of like the beefy stance. The smallest I generally go is 40mm, so I'm not sure this would be for me. 42mm..maybe, but the 44 is just awesome.

They are a watch packed with history and a unique story. They are also a great way to get attention and that seems to be important to most people in the watch collecting business. For various reasons, of course. The weakest part of the Panerai brand are generally the actual watch mechanics vs its competitors... with that said, I would estimate that 90 plus percent of luxury watch owners would have no idea if they had a $20 Japanese automatic movement transplanted into their $10,000 watch so ... but away if you like Panerai. I do . . . 🙃

Besides the watch, by the way great watch on a great size, let's be honests one and for all, water resistance for watches is such a BS in general, i'm every now and then, maximum deepth I went it's been around 30 mts may be 35 mts which is actually a lot, if watches would really be resisting 50 mts for real or let's say 100 as most of them it's truly enough, many youtubers saying that 100mts should be enough for most of the people I would say it's not enough for just 1/100.000 people, deepths superior to 100 mts people really know what that means???... 100m water resistant? I will allow it...Then again they should reduce the number of different variations. Their catalog should consist of the 3 main lines: Luminor, Radiomir and Submersible. Submersibles and Luminors should be always rugged 300m or more divers in sizes 40mm and bigger for Luminors and 42mm and bigger for Submersibles. Radiomiomirs can start at 38mm with 100m water resistant minimum. All models should come with an extra rubber strap indicating confidence in their diving capabilities. This also advertises the availability of different color straps to new customers. Special editions like Marenostrums should be just that: special and limited.

I don't agree. The selling point of Panerai is the big open dials on oversized cases. That what makes them unique. They are period correct in size at 44 and 47mm. They now sell 38mm, 40mm, 42mm, 44mm and 47mm cases in Luminor alone. I think they are now releasing far too many models. Look at the value retention of their historic 44 and 47mm pieces compared to all of these new sizes. If you want a 40mm watch, there are hundreds out there. If you want a Panerai, buy a 44 or 47mm in my opinion. That's what Panerai is for.

I am really looking forward this watch. It is certainly not worth the asking price, but here in the UK don't give discounts at all. So I'm on the fence. More importantly the store I frequent said these are not readily available as of now and mainly boutique only. So lets see how this plays out in the end. I might get one. Having said that, I am also one of the few people who actually don't mind the Due either.

Hello John, thank you for this review. I think you should go to politics, you speak so much and the watch itself could be covered in less than 3 mins easy. :)

I love the designs, don’t love the super high price, but also 100m WR is Ok but should be higher. Also why use exotic animal strap instead of a bracelet or Italian rubber?!

Lolling at people who want 40mm panerai. Panerai has a particular case which is not suitable for tiny miny sheeps. It should stick to 44 45 and lowest should be 42. Just have good colors and better complication options across the whole range.

Nothing about the movement? Is it true that the movement doesn't hack? Why would that be? Is the movement in-house. Is this watch a decent value proposition?

    it’s a panerai not a cartier … it’s a tool it should be 300 m water resistant

Sorry but the new watch isn’t that innovative on their part!
Their old watches which had 8 days(if memory serves me right) were innovative but deteriorated prematurely over the stress of the main spring force on the pivot. Why didn’t they do a bit of R&D before offering these to the public.
They should use a team of designers for starters and bring something hot & new!
Sorry to be a party pooper!
    John

The production of this watch clearly cut corners and that’s disappointing. No reason why this watch should have a SnapBack case. Should the day date not have a twin lock crown because it’s a dress watch? There’s heritage and sticking to brand ethos which this model doesn’t fully represent which is a missed opportunity.

Are you serious? At the beginning and end of this video you’re advertising for straps and in the middle of the video you ask who needs more water resistance for a watch that has crocodile straps? Straps can be changed as this is no traditional dress watch. You look at this watch and expect it to be water resistant. Are 100 m sufficient? Sure! But are 100 m what is expected from the brand and from this design?

Every dog has its day, and my god, didn’t they take advantage of their popularity. Well the party is over for them, and IMO rightly so. Special edition after special edition, poor customer service, advertising fakes, Divers that weren’t divers, not to mention Brooklyn Bridge.🤦🏻‍♂️
You had a good run, lads, but good luck and hype have caught up with you.

Panerai and 40mm do not go along well together. The watch might look like Panerai but its not in its core. Oxymoron at its finest.
