I used shipping tape to remove the glass. I applied one piece of shipping tape across the whole top edge of the glass, making sure the tape adhered to at least 90% of the surface. With a little bit tape extending over the sides of the glass, I lifted on each end that extended passed the glass. It came right out.
Check what brand hard drive you already have installed in your IMac. You are not able to install a western digital hard drive if your IMac was pre installed with a Seagate hard drive and vice versa. The connections are completely different. I found out the hard way. Also, I installed this same Seagate hard drive and it crapped out 11 days before my 2 year warranty ran out. Luckily I get a free replacement but unfortunately it's another Seagate hard drive. This will be the 3rd Seagate hard drive in my 5 year old 27" IMac!
Good video. (2009 iMac) I didn't have access to suction cups so I carefully put my fingernails on the right hand side of the glass and pried it loose. I also used two different sized torx heads (t8 & t10), needed t8 for the pins and taking off the caddy. Make sure the replacement hard drive is from the same manufacturer. √
You did a nice job. Nice and slow and step by step and very careful. But, I would have liked to see the cables on the inside. Where they are, how to disconnect them, and how to reconnect them.
I have a similar IMac that I'm planning to replace a failed hard drive. Do you have another video on how to load the OS X once you replace the hard drive ? I have the recovery disk that came with the computer six years ago but I'm not sure how to load it. Thank you.
I have an older model iMac, a 2007 20inch that is giving me some problems. I had it worked on about 4 or 5 years ago at which time the hard drive was replaced. My problem now is very similar to the one I had then. It's gotten to the point where when I'm trying to do something, even as simple as deleting emails it will lock up on me and my only recourse is to do a hard shutdown on it. Does this sound like a hard drive problem or something else. I don't want to spend a lot of money on an older computer unless it's fairly cheap. I feel confident after watching your video that I could replace the hard drive.
Hi, I hope you can answer! I can use any type, mark HDD in my imac 2011 late? I want to change the 500 gb hdd to a 2TB hdd, I can use a simple samsung / seagate hdd like in my desktop windows pc? Thanks!
Jeremiah, I like how you explained to replacing a HD on Mac computer. I have only one question: If replaced the HD, what happens with the Mac software installation in the HD, it is including?
Great job on the video Jeremiah. Question, I saw another video where they said there would be no firmware on the new HD for the HD temp sensor, and apparently they had some issues getting it to work properly after installation. The HD was a Seagate, same as was removed. I'm sure I can physically do this on my 21.5" mid 2010, OSX 10.8.5, I just don't want to run into any operating issues once it's in. I'm getting an HD failing warning from SMART utility. It's still working but really slow suddenly, and the RBBOD is now a constant companion. I have plenty of time machine back ups.
Thanks a lot brother, i have managed to reach the hard drive... Im not sure wheather im fixing the right component. My Mac OS fell yesterday and when i tried starting it up today it ddnt start, just gave me an on going "bip" sound... I've tried to uninstall and installed back the rams but still i wasnt responding, so i decided to reach for a hard drive. Can you please help me on what the problem might be
Hi dear; I have replaced my old hard drive with a 2tb Seagate the same whey as you showed on your video, after turned on computer, only a white screen coms on with a blinking ? mark in the middle, what can I do from here?
Great video but a recommendation for future videos that you turn some lights on or lower your camera ISO, Shutterspead and Aperture to expose your video properly.
Yes but thinner iMacs are hard to get into a lot more work as the screen and glass are laminated together and stuck onto the chassis with tape on the chassis and on back of lcd screen
Thanks for putting together this video, I followed your instructions to the letter but my IMac won't light up at all, it boots up with audio and I can here the hdd starting but that's it.
Can you tell me which Hard drive did you install. I plan to install a 2TB Seagate hard drive for my iMac 21.5 mid 2011 model. Which one should I go with?
Get a Barracuda XT SSHD. If you are aware of the Momentus XT series that came out before it has the same density as a 3.5" drive but has a SSD cache to help performance.
Frank Ong Thanks. Can you ping me some of the links(URL) of HD and their models as I am on a budget too. Just wanted to ask whether if any Seagate Barracuda 2 TB version would be compatible with my iMac 22" mid 2011 model?
khushal bhadra www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178380 eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST2000DX001S/ MACsales.com / OWC are usually a good choice for looking for upgrades.
Frank Ong Thanks for the links Frank. I wonder these are the new hybrid drives. Also there's one question I had people replacing their hard drives have had issues with the Temperature sensor connector because of which they are facing fan speed issues. Will the above links you have given work with my iMac (mid 2011) without these issues?
question? After I install the hard drive. I turn the imac 21.5 ( mid 2010) on .. but screen is black? any idea? "The hard drive is not the apple original HD"
so did this to my iMac mid 2010. and I cant get the OS to install. I have the snow leopard dvd and i hold down the c key the option key and every other combo of keys at start up of the machine. I have also tried to remote install from macbook pro. please help i have no idea what to do
Did you ever find a solution to your issue? Curious to see because I have a similar model I'm about to purchase a SSD for, and I don't want to run into the same issues.
It was a simple dumb thing! Totally my mistake. I was trying to use an is that was too old for my i3 processor. The second I used lion it worked like a charm
Great vid. So you managed to get an SSD drive behind the PSU without having to remove the optical drive like most guides suggest for a 2nd drive installation? I presume you had to do major surgery to install the additional SATA and power cables to the motherboard?
Fabian Dee It wasn't too bad. I had to pull the motherboard forward to access the other ports as they are on the back side of the motherboard which took some careful work.
Jeremiah Duke Um i have a 2009-2012 between those years i think but yea my mac was shut off fot the night and when i turn it on it goes to the loading bar but when it gets half way it shuts off do you think its the hard drive?
David: which pin that really connected to temp sensor socket at harddrive? I feel a little puzzled, because after removed the plug, I realize that the plug has 6 pins only, on the other side, the socket has 8 pins at the harddrive. Thx. Mine is iMac 21", yr 2009..
+J Suparman best best is don't bother with the owc lead it's rather expensive . Download fan control fir Mac . It's free and small app that runs in the background and is free . set the fan and optical drive speeds manual at around 1500 rpm I been using ever since I replaced my hard drive and its exc no problems
You remove the sensor cable from the old hard drive, and then you just left that cable disconnected from the new drive. Why? I have a new drive that, according to OWC is thermal-sensor compatable with the original drive, so I assume I should be connecting that up, no?
I followed your video as far as I could, but that video signal cable did not look like it detached on either end. So I had to pull the monitor out as far as I could and sneak the hard drive out. Also, there was no 3rd connection to the hard drive, just power and SATA. Everything is reconnected and seems to be working though. Whoever thought putting magnets next to screw holes was a good idea needs to be beaten.
About that missing 3rd connector: I had to install some fan control software to keep my iMac from sounding like it was taxiing for takeoff. Still working great.
I installed a SSD/2nd drive in my iMac 27" mid 2011 and my CPU fan runs at 4000 rpm against 1000rpm.I tried all the software options but with no results. Can anyone help?.
Try smc Fan control, an app that allows to you to override the fans,so you can set whatever speed you want. Have been using it for over a year and no problems.Cheers.
I installed my new hard drive today..It went well. Just need a giant sledge hammer so I can smash it to bits. Because I cant install the OS X. Keep smiling folks. Poor people try to fix crap. The rich just buy a new computer. Man that would be nice.
Thanks Jeremiah, I will be replacing my hard drive. Can you recommend a way to extract the encrypted data from my old drive for which I lost/forgot my password. Never encrypt will drinking!!! Ha ha. Thanks in advance for your help.
Kinda Gamey O.o that might be an issue. I have never attempted recovering from a drive with a lost key. We encrypt all our laptops at work and key track of the keys with special software so they will never be lost.
the 5 green lights inside my imac turn off when i reconnected my hard drive but when i disconnect it the computer turns on. im trying to do data recovery with the hard drive. how do i know if i fried the hard drive?
you are a lot more helpful than most diy vids. the detail you provide is really helpful.
These instructions are very clear and quite simple to follow.
Very good Video because you took your time and talked through the entire process
Thank you for posting this video,Very informative and easy to understand!
excellent! crystal clear instruction. Loved it
thanks jeremiah really clear and helpful video

I just used my nails
Very helpful . Good explanation .

Thanks for the video! I have a iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 24-Inch (Al) mid 2007 and want to replace the hard drive. Which one do you recommend?
your video is brilliant thank you reached all the way to scotland
Kelly Allen That is awesome. Glad I could help.

cool video i fink i wil try this now but how big of a hard drive should i go for tho
thanks for the video. It gave me what I needed to do the HDD swap.
Jon Newman Awesome, glad I could help.
Well done, i can do this, thanks for taking the time to explain this
You did a nice job. Nice and slow and step by step and very careful.
But, I would have liked to see the cables on the inside. Where they are, how to disconnect them, and how to reconnect them.
Thx man helped me so much to get a new hard drive in. :)
Great video - thanks
once the hard drive is installed - what is the next step? or steps
Great tutorial. Usefull indeed. Thx..

Hey Jeremy, what are the specifications I need to look for when buying a hard drive for my Mac? (same model as yours)
how does the signal cable detach ?
Hi dear; I have replaced my old hard drive with a 2tb Seagate the same whey as you showed on your video, after turned on computer, only a white screen coms on with a blinking ? mark in the middle, what can I do from here?
excellent video , my mac crashed when it was trying to do and update , not sure why it happened but its blank now
Great vid!
Thank you. Great video. What if you don't have a solid state drive ? How does the OS gets installed on the new hard drive ?
I guess I am kinda randomly asking but does anybody know a good website to stream newly released tv shows online?
Hello so where do i get the tools from?
awesome, thank you for the video.
Very Nice ... Brilliant.. Your Awesome Thank you!!!!!
Thanks for this video.
Shlomi Vaknin You are absolutely welcome.
Great video but a recommendation for future videos that you turn some lights on or lower your camera ISO, Shutterspead and Aperture to expose your video properly.
Could I buy a HDD to USB converter adapter, copy the files to the new HDD, then replace the old HDD with the new HDD?
Can you swap out a stock HDD for a SaTa HDD?
instead of a hardrive can i install an ssd because i only want an ssd
iMac mid 2010 - Replacement hard drive is same?
where do i get suction cups like those???
ebay. search heavy duty suction cups. I actually got one for my car to mount my phone and works great for this too
is this the same process for the newer thinner macs ?
Yes but thinner iMacs are hard to get into a lot more work as the screen and glass are laminated together and stuck onto the chassis with tape on the chassis and on back of lcd screen
Thanks for putting together this video, I followed your instructions to the letter but my IMac won't light up at all, it boots up with audio and I can here the hdd starting but that's it.
thank you mate,
Hey I've got a 2009 imac with no hard drive, couldn't I just plug an external drive in and use that?
yes but you have to create a bootable usb and have a usb seperate from the boot usb that is big enough to hold the OSX.
Is it a 2.5 or 3.5 inch Hard Drive?
Can you tell me which Hard drive did you install. I plan to install a 2TB Seagate hard drive for my iMac 21.5 mid 2011 model. Which one should I go with?

Where is the ram located?
+T-Bone at the very bottom of the mac.. under the apple logo on the underside, there is a panel you can unscrew and slot in / remove your ram
Tristan Armes thanks man i got it figured out this was a lot of help
Can i use any hardrive to replace thi existent one?
You can but other hard drive don't have the temp sensor connector so your have to get a owc temp sensor data lead and they cost around 40 quid

Try smc Fan control, an app that allows to you to override the fans,so you can set whatever speed you want.

Super Apple design compare to all other computer desktop design
Thanks in advance!

I'll use my GPS and Dashcam suction cups.
Follow-up to follow.

have you tried os snow leopard
No Ill try anything,,thanks Ill try that
I've heard of Seagates being complete shit. I had some problems myself with it. What do you guys think?
Have my seagate 500 gb in the iMac 2011 and still ok but updating soon to 1 tb sshd seagate as easy to install.

would of been better if you had showed people what cables you wete unplugging
apple made this so you have to throw it away and but a new one.... planned obsolescence
All you need is your finger nail, don't need to buy anything to remove the screen.

Mac desktops are beautiful and stupid as fuck.
Using a magnet to hold the screws whilst installing a new hard drive is very stupid advice indeed.
would it work for a mac 20 inch of 2009
