Great video! Most people do not realize the tradition and hard work of fishermen. I used to hunt and fish with a commercial fisherman down in vermilion. Lot of respect to you.👍🏻

Man those are some fine looking spotted cats. Good looking nets too. I built some 42in nets for an ol boy from Arkansas. Had a little material left so built me one. I was wearing them ol Buffalo out for a while with it til the Thieves found it. Running nets is alot like square bailing hay, seems like you always wind up with a little bit more than you want to deal with lol. Enjoyed your video. Check mine out sometime
@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 thats a fact. As long as they are in the right place. I keep my commercial license on account of the limits on sabine river but I hardly ever fish more than 5 nets at a time anymore. 2 or 3 of them 3 or 4 ft nets put in the right spots will work a man to death.
Man I like the way you filet that flathead. How do you cut through the ribs on the bigger ones? I tried it today on a 10 pounder and could barely get through them but it was a lot easier to filet.
10 lber should not be a problem. You may need a sharper set of blades or different knife. My favorite fillet knife is the Black and Decker walmart special. You can find them on Amazon also. They cost only $15-20, have good blades, and they hold up!!! I fillet up to 20 lb and better with that Electric knife

That boat is a 14' x 42" but it's pushing it as far as big enough for the river were fishing. I'll be in a 16' sea ark this year more than likely. Yes, I've fished the other nets for bluecats, typically when we bait, but we mostly fish Hoopnets. Hoping to get a few more net videos out this spring, so set the Bell to "ALL"
It would be real hard without current. You'd be better off with the wire catfish nets in that situation. Check out our videos on those style nets. They mostly catch blues and channel cats
I got mine from a lady that remodeled old houses. Sometimes you can get them from scrap yards. I had surgery and am on light duty right now, but soon as I'm off, I'm going to do a video on making net weights from concrete. I used to use a lot of concrete ones, but have lost them over the years.
No sir, I sure haven't. Never thought about it or ever pursued any type of guiding. Friends and family go with me often though. We are catching a few fish now, but it's slow due to a dry winter. No current. We did have a good catch of channels this week though!!
You can catch a few fish with different types of nets year round. Winter, spring, and fall are much better fishing. First thing to decide is what type fish you want to catch, then research catching that species for the time of year you want to fish. Hoop nets we normally fish in current, but you can weight the lines and fish them in lakes where legal in spring and fall and do very good. Right now in the heat of the summer you can catch a lot of channel cats in reinforcement wire nets or slat traps where legal with cheese trimming or soy/cheese blocks. We will be shooting our next video next week on that. Should be out in a couple weeks!!

@@floydaltonmiller I'll be glad to share any knowledge I have. The nets you should be using are the same ones in our wire net videos. Their 5-6 ft long, reinforcement wire with 1.25-1.5 mesh webbing. From June-Sept I'd hang them in 10-16 ft of water with the flews down, and the tail end towards the surface, with the tail end only being a couple foot from the surface. I like to tie my rope around the tree or stumps about 6" under the surface so it's not visible. People will steal your nets. Put half of a compressed cheese block behind the second flew and check it 36-48 hours later. No longer. Once you find where the channels are, start using a whole block for bait. First off make sure it's legal in your state, and the waters you want to fish. Also check legalities on mesh size as well. If all is good, three is a good number to start with and it gives you three chances at filling your belly with some nice fillets. I've used one or two before and missed all together. Minimum now I use three if I want to eat fish. Beginner netter's should probably go with 3 ft hoops in 1.5-2.5 mesh size for catfish or 4 ft hoop 3 in mesh for buffalo. You'll still catch big Flatties in those too. My favorite all time is 2 in mesh 3.5ft hoops. 100 ft of rope per net, and some really good anchors. Watch through our videos on how we set our nets up. Don't skimp on rope, anchors, or drags, or you will loose your investment. Also try to hide from thieves if possible. You will get your nets stolen in most places. Ask questions on any of our videos. Got some tips coming on next net video😉

I'll have to do a video on that next time I catch one. I cut the skin next to fill plate, down the back and belly. Then I skin them. Cut the ribs out, take the side off, then save the backbones. The sides are very full of tiny bones. Lot of people just eat the Ribs because of all the bones
Well, in the state of Louisiana, we have a vast resource in fisheries. The state allows us to fish a smaller number of nets as recreational fishermen. We still have to buy license for each thing we fish called a gear license. When fishing hoop nets recreationally, we are not allowed to sell our catch, but can provide for ourselves. Commercial fishing license cost more, but their allowed to sell. Louisiana is known for its past time of fishing nets and traps. It's kinda a heritage thing for us to continue and pass the trade on to others!
We normally don't bait our hoop nets, you just fish them where the fish run. They have roads or trails they use, just like we do. If we fish slate traps or wire catfish nets, we use cheese trimmings or the power blocks, (cheese/soy compressed blocks)
@@derick2986 Man it's a shame that the society we live in today you cannot leave fishing gear unattended. We either tie on stumps under water so the rope isn't visible, or anchor in place and use drags to drag our head lines up. It's the best way to keep your stuff
We're not in Texas, and it's perfectly legal to fish Nets in Louisiana recreationally and commercially. Our river systems are loaded with Catfish as nd growing up around commercial fishermen, I've never seen any sort of decline in populations. Obviously from the videos. I believe in carrying on traditions, and fighting to keep what rights we have as long as possible. That's the only reason I still net fish, to pass that tradition on. I catch fish a lot of different ways, and believe they all should remain legal, but regulated. That's what Louisiana does for now.
