- Spitfire have just released a new Albion library and it's LOUD. Albion Colossos is aimed squarely at big action cues and trailers but how does it stack up? Guy Michelmore takes a first look and writes a short cue with the library.

Take 2!
Your day doesn't get much better than a brand-new Guy Michelmore video.
Especially about a brand-new orchestra VST
I can never get enough of this. The combination of: 1. Learning, 2. Write: 3. Inspiration, and most of all is number 4: Playful and humorous approach. Guy, you are LEGENDDDD :)
Love this guy 💜
I didn't expect to see you here 💀
Rarely do I find channels more enjoyable than your good one Guy!
Thank you :)
I concur
I just bought this yesterday at a nice discount. A very nice collection. Spitfire gets my money again but worth every penny. Keeps me entertained for days. I only have one of the Albions along with their Chamber Strings and BBC Orch. Good to see you Guy! You always brighten up my day.
Must have been a long week for you Guy 😂
Fantastic video as always!
I know -Oh well!
Guy… putting out the video early. It’s a bit on-brand, and I mean that in the best way possible. It’s this kind of relatable fumbling that keeps me coming back week after week. I don’t wanna see the guy that has it all figured out, stoic, and such. I want to see the guy that’s excited, digging in for the first time, making discoveries as he goes. Great as always. Cheers, mate!
Well flakey I can do!
Guy, you're just amazing sir. I always find your videos interesting and engaging, and without a doubt humorously entertaining.😊 I learn something new from you every time! Thank you for taking the time to share with all of us your creativity perfectly mixed in with teaching.
@Guy_Michelmore Thank you 🙏 Absolutely! I will do that right now.
@Guy_Michelmore Hello, Guy. I'm on a mobile device. I'm not seeing the address, sir.
You have such a great presentation style! I love watching your videos!
Dear Mr Michaelmore - you have my sincere gratitude for your teachings. You are a genius. You have my deep thanks.
Oh my this got chaotic very quickly 😂 first time watcher, and probably the fastest I've ever subbed to anyone. Sounded great, and love your sense of humor.
Hi Michelmore! I want to thank you a lot I learned cubase in 30 minutes with ONLY YOUR HELP! I was searching for some videos and i found you. I am so happy to learn producing music but it isn't that hard for me( i am pianist). So, thank you a lot for your effort and I also really like your explanation.See you next time bye!
It only took me about ten minutes of watching your video before Spitfire had my money. Absolutely one of the best libraries I have used. Will you be sharing your Cubase template or offer for sale?
Really exciting that we have our first Albion in their own engine! I'm seriously thinking about getting this. I really love their plugin. It always looks great, it's easier to navigate and resize than Kontakt... Definitely an exciting library! And the scale slider that fades between the symphonic and chamber orchestra? Genius!!!
Yup. All the fuss from the toxic spitfire fanboys was all nonsense. I enjoy using their GUI and find it easy to use and intuitive. I just wish there was a global settings menu for start up templates.
Im on M1 mac and I use logic pro and I have a lot of issues with the spitfire engine sadly :/ but aside from that its very userfriendly
Too bad it’s an awful Albion
Love the teary eyes and the trembling - full of emotion - voice at the end, could it be the sign of an artist carried away by his own creation ?
'A big, low, wodgy mess'. I resemble that remark. But I don't want my mixes to do so too! Thanks for another great walkthrough. Early, on time, late - time moves on and it doesn't matter anymore! It's lovely to watch you work; you sound a bit poorly though, in this video! If so, I hope you are feeling better now.
5:52 Doug and Carrie, Doug and Carrie, Doug and Carrie, Doug and Carrie 😁
Love it. Your workflow is so inspiring
Guyyyy I think you might have put this vid out early 😲😲
I really did..... now a week on
Great, Mr. Guy. Thanks again for sharing your talent.
Am I the only one thinking: Doug and Carrie, Doug and Carrie…?
Nice one, Guy! It always improves my mood watching one of your videos.
Hello Guy,i just love your personality and attributes you really makes watching tutorials with a fun mood! please dont stop!Hello Guy,i just love your personality and attributes you really makes watching tutorials with a fun mood! please dont stop!
Thank you, Guy. Love & respect from Copenhagen ❤
Thanks for the nice walkthrough, looks interesting for sure. Big sounds!
Love it! Hyped up stuff! Good personality too!
I always keep a clean new 2 inch paint brush in the studio. It's a great tool for quickly dusting off all the studio gear.
The shed…. In the garden it’s a lost cause keeping the dust at bay
I always love your video, whatever the subject is!
Oh... about subjects, I have a proposition: what about making a series of video teaching the standard solutions for scoring a scene?
I'm talking about the clichè, what one usually shouldn't do, but you have to know them to avoid them. And sometimes, let's be honest, you might even have to use them because that's what the director want!
What I mean is something like "...to score a love scene the typical approach is a major diatonic scale played by strings..." followed by a demonstration. This could be done for different kind of scenes, like "love scene", "sad scene", "thriller/tension", bla bla.
I know you already did something similar in the past, but not under the viewpoint of composition/harmony approach and not in a organized way.
I hope I've been able to explain what I mean in my faulty and clumsy English language.
Then, of course, you might answer that this is one of the subjects in your Master Degree courses... it would probably make sense!
Still, asking is free, isn't it? 🙂
Hi there from Perth Australia, love your vids…. Briliant
The "where I am ahu heu where are we going heh heu ...hmm" at 19:22 really got me 🤣🤣🤣🥰
I want to get into orchestral composing very soon, what's a good fundamental library to have? Should I go for Albion One, or something like Colossus? (haven't watched vid yet so maybe that will be answered lol). I'll probably get a few over time, but want a good starting point (preferably less than $500).
That was very useful and creative - Thank you
Great review, thanks guy.
Guy, thanks for your videos! Let’s assume someone has a ton, ton, TOOONNN of diverse epic and non-epic orchestral classic and cinematic instrument, guitar VSTs and percussion libraries, does this library give a musician something he couldn’t have previously, or is it all about convenience and ease of use in such a case? This is an amazing product, I’m just not certain if I need it.
Same boat. Definitely don't need it. I could put a saturator and a sub behind my strings on my own haha
Do you need it? No but neither do I yet today I was using it in an animation project because it was.... the sound I needed. But then I do this for a living so its a different equation
@@ThinkSpaceEducation I know exactly what you mean. Same reason a guitar player might have a dozen guitars or a guy like me might have hundreds of thousands of synths, some of which may sound “close enough” to another ear, but to me, do not have the exact same “oomph.”
Sorry for swearing, but JESUS FUCKING CHRIST that guitar bit with dive and reverse soooo musically sexy. Goosebumps. I wondered if you can combine rock elements with symphony. Yeah, I know about symphony rock etc, but my word... This particular combination is out of the world. Wowzers!
COOL! Thanks, Guy
I have a about 10 Spitfire libraries, including 2 Albions but this one didn't grab me for some reason. It does seem to have some thoughtful features though.
Missed you Guy!
last summer when you were melting in the UK I had commented we go from +40 to -40 in Kingston Canada (on the great lake Ontario) Never being one to lie we have reached that epic temp of -40c tonight. brrrrr. Why my great-grandfather who immigrated form Birmingham came to Montreal and not California I don't know. Must have come in July. Best.
Thanks for sharing. We are looking for more tutorials and ideas.
Yes more coming shortly
Interesting :) I though he is a plain Cubase user. Are you transitioning to Logic or just enjoy to use both / explore ?
This is the tamest Colossus I have heard.
hah! ok to fix the shed dirt issue, just get a simple Winix type of an air purifier (even used one but focus on one that can push a lot of air around). Customize the filter by adding some additional cheap filters to take out dust...that will take care of that shed nicely.
Thank you for the video, this looks really interesting, even if I don't think it would fit my needs.
Do you have any recommendations for someone looking to step up from BBC Discovery? I'd like more articulations and instrument choice, but it's hard to know where to start and my budget isn't huge.
I think the first thing to do is let us know your budget. A low budget can mean different things for different people.
Wait, is not in the Spitfire page yet! How did you get it?
Seems like a mistake. This video shouldn’t be listed as „public“ yet 😅
@@friedrichgattermann 🤭
Great video! One advise maybe; try to mute or a least lower your mic volume when you’re playing so the sound of your keyboard doesn’t mask what you are actually playing. Cheers
Bravo young man!! :D
😂😂 I knew I saw this video before... 😂 😂 😂... Great video...
I absolutely love you content guy, it has helped me tremendously. I am going to be studying music composition next year in a university, and I wanted to see if you could recommend a keyboard that would be compatible with daws and other "music gear" that would be somewhat affordable? My last keyboard broke and I am looking for one that will last me a while and that I will be able to use as I advance more in my music. Thank you again for making this content!
you can't do anything wrong with the Native Instruments midi keyboards. best daw integration in my opinion. just as you are new to that field be aware of the fact that they are midi keyboards what means you need a daw with a library to get sound.
@@JesuisParte ok, thank you very much this is very helpful.
The Snakes of Russia sounds in this library make it totally worth it
@@dinopolesesharkosaur I've been urging the same thing. Joseph does produce some damn good sample packs.
That instrumental you made would be awesome as the intro music for someones UA-cam channel. The intro music for the start of every video.

Guy: Oh guitars longs
Colossus: Plays GM Distorted Guitar from 1983
Guy: Anyway....
I don't even remember this library being announced xD
Couple of days ago
Dark Knight Vibes! Love it!
Do you stream anywhere? Would be awesome to see you hold a workshop or create something in real time or along with your viewers. Thanks for another great video!
I do to my MA students but I should do some more on here - have done in the past so thanks for the reminder
I’ve read something about the different articulations not being able to change fluidly like with Albion One. So I can’t play a part and then choose which of the notes is a long, a legato, a spiccato etc. I have to load a new instance of Colossus for every different articulation. Is that true ? And wouldn’t that be super annoying ? Makes much more sense to me that you can change it like in Albion One.
Those flutes are somewhere between "Live and Let Die" and "Some Mothers do 'Ave 'em" :)
Did you switch to Logic from Cubase?
Any clue why Spitfire insists on making every single one of their products at such a LOW recorded volume that you can barely hear it? For years I have to push any Spitfire instrument channel by at least 8db just to get it loud enough to work with (compared to other non-Spitfire instruments).
I’ve had the same issue and assumed it’s bc I don’t know something haha. Like an expectation to put compression or something
So much of this you could do yourself with their other libraries and synth patches that you build.
I agree. I wonder if this is more a time-saving tool than an indispensable set of sounds
Owning OT Ark 1, 2 , 3 and 4, EW CC and Albion One, for example, do we need this?
About the library, not much to say,, unfortunately, but about the dust on your keyboard, a decksaver save you, even in that beautifull studio you have :)
Hey Guy Autograph Grand by Labs is pretty good if you've tried it??
Well I just finished paying off the BBC Symphony Orchestra plugin... looks like this one's next!
Guy, what software would I have to already have in order to use this? What do you use?
Any DAW as it comes with its own player
When that guitar came in. 🤯😁
Hey Guy, what do you really think about this libary?
This is basically Spitfire's version of Metropolis Ark, then, right? Actually, it's kinda like if Metropolis Ark and Heavyocity Damage had a British frankenbaby.
I've had the same issues with insane amounts of dust collecting on my gear, my keyboard, computer, MPC X etc.
Do yourself a favor mate and throw some towels over your keyboards etc. when they're not in use and you'll never
have to deal with the dusty keys and electronics again! All you need is a few bath towels and your gear will thank
you later!
Legend.
2:34 Three years of Playstation memories in 2 seconds.
might be a leak. but it has worked its magic, I‘m gonna buy it
Hello, my question is when making music using these plugins, who owns the copyright? Also, it seems with these plugins, anyone can make music, even for someone like me who has zero knowledge in music theory. Is this a good thing or bad thing? I mean if I made some great music, people would expect me to know how to play at least a few musical instrument, but in reality I know nothing. Will I disappoint them? Is this cheating? 😅
I believe this new library serves a purpose: big sound. What about RR? The demos I've heard gave me a strange feeling...
However, blending other Spitfire orchestral libraries I always have with some EW forbidden planet brilliant patches+ some distorsion may lead so a similar result. I think this is a good product when you need a first libray focused on Epic/Hybrid... I pass ... Respectfully !
I think this one works best in the company of other libraries - it has quite a distinctive sound and if its all Colossos it can be a bit much
Yes Stephane, this library is mainly intended for epic hybrid/trailer stuff more than the traditional classical sound. I believe it will work very well with most aggressive hybrid orchestral/synth libs such as ProjectSam Pandora, Metropolis Ark 1 and most Heavyocity products indeed.
exclusive walkthrough? ;)
Hey Guy, how does Logic compare to Cubase? Would love a video about that
Good idea
@@ThinkSpaceEducation Hurrayyy ✨
How similar to Heavyocity's Punish is the hype slider? Seems like it's similar to that, which is really cool!
Punish is a very powerful distortion plug-in probably the best
Bravo!
Are the instruments slow to load for anyone else? I have 64GB of RAM and all my samples on a T7 external SSD. It's the first samples I've ever purchased to have such a lag anytime I load a new patch.
Let’s go!
Greetings from turkey...we love you
Epic Celesta is my new band name.
Amazing. and also, can you teach anyone else how to make 20th century (fox) studios fanfare?
Looks like it's a hungry resource beast. PS - 3:35. Absolutely, Guy. Good for you. 7:18. Peeps need to get used to our dirty irony in the UK, well, what's left of it anyway.
Bottom right is a transpose function
You know it'll be loud when the stereo out is already in the red before Guy even had pressed record.
Can you please post a video on how you set this up in cubase? I see you using logic which is not helpful for us non Apple users. I like how you have all the parts etc. Thanks.
@Guy_Michelmore spammers get reported. Bye 👋
5:53 Doug and Carrie, Doug and Carrie
Are you going to do any exploration of Dolby Atmos in Logic Pro? I've got it & it's trying to seduce me. But, ummmm, I really don't know what to do with it. 😂
🔥🔥
I am going to watch this, although I think it's somehow a leak 🤣
Same it’s gonna be gone if I leave I’m sure
@Guy Michelmore Could you please do something about the "you've won a prize" scammers on your channel. They are becoming a real nuisance and put people off commenting on your great content.
awsome beard!🫡🙌🏿
UK is well known for it's irony - but only if you live there. We who don't live in the UK but only visited 15 times between 1978 and 2015 feel that irony is less used in the UK than in the real world.
Wouldn’t this be the second look now?
Ha ha! very true
Irony at work .. guess that was one for the americans 😄
Remember they tried years ago to introduce Faulty Towers in the USA, and noone got the humor 😆
Gotta love british humor 🥰
That ostinato in the beginning reminds me of Rammstein.
ur hilarious. great demo!
This is soundtrack is BATMAN )) Very coool, wonderful
