Had to rough it like that for a whole week when attending SERE School (after graduating SWCC Class 27, 1999) while serving in the US Navy. It's no joke when you're down to the bare bones with the gear. Glad you and the Crew pulled through. Cheers, brother.

Thanks for serving. Spent time with the 1st MarDiv in 1972 when I did my survival training. It was nothing like your SERES training, they just dumped our class, about a platoon (in pairs) out in the back country, with only our poncho and poncho liner, first aid kit, basic field pack w/ change of underwear, dry socks, etc., a map, a compass, 1 red smoke grenade per pair, 2 canteens of water w/ canteen cup, our K-bar and 1 C-rats meal each, then told us to find our way home. They gave us 7 days to finish a 5 day trip, if not back, they would start looking for us on the eighth day. We made it in, about daybreak on the morning of the 6th day. Only one group had to be looked for, one of the guys had fallen and broken his leg.

I think a lot of people scoff at the low temperatures in the desert not realizing our temperatures don't just change 10-20 degrees but 30-40 and there's almost nothing to protect you naturally. There's nothing to block the sun or the wind and there's nothing to keep the heat in at night or stop the heat from radiating off the ground during the day. 70 degrees in northern Arizona can feel beautiful, when you're in the shade and a cool breeze will have you put on a long sleeved shirt but step into the sun you'd think it was 90 degrees

Great Video James..I have a Real Hudson Bay 100% wool blanket that I just used on the Pecos River this weekend. 34 at night..Point being, I also have a cheaper 100% wool blanket for just such occasions. I dont worry about grass or sticks and such. Burrito Style! Just get the thicker tighter woven blanket. Does the trick.. Also, may I recommend the UCO flatpack mini. I use that for heat and cooking, even in the wind, (properly placed), lol, very little fuel required, and I know uou like the flatpack. Try the mini..no worries of blowing embers really. Just food for thought. Gotta go camping amigo.. Again, very good video! Well Done!😉🍻

This is great, been from the desert all my life. Our weather is a pain to deal with and the cold. It’s not something to scoff at for us cause we are not really prepared for it. The heat too. I’ve known people to have heat strokes. I’ve been lucky yet careless in walking and chilling g out for hours in the 110 summer time so heat doesn’t bother me as much but the cold. That always gets you. Even people not from here are like it’s chilly when the temperature drops the 30 or 40. Great video love the stuff and hope to try it sometime.

  • @tequilastraightup595

Here is something I learned in survival training. Dig a shallow pit inside your shelter, about 6 to 8 inches deep and a little bigger then you are. Line it with grass, but keep enough back to cover yourself up with. That will help hold heat in and deflect some of the wind.

Man if you could find some giant agave stalks I bet you could make a pretty dope shelter. Props to @Junkyard Fox for making a realistic survival shelter in the desert where there are far fewer resources (especially water). Many bushcraft videos on YT look like they're shot in the pacific northwest. I've lived and hiked around both in Oregon and the Big Bend region of Texas so I'm somewhat familiar with the biomes

Maybe a Dakota fire hole could be dug closer to the shelter for heat if the fire was small. Perhaps going the extra mile and creating thatching bundles that are tied and then tying those onto the shelter frame would result in a more sturdy roof. Lots of work I know, but if you are going back to that spot more than twice, probably worth it. Next time bring Steel Panther with you.

James... you might consider digging whats called a hasty fighting position hole or depression then build the debris shelter over that. It would give you a little more depth/room inside. Something you might also want to also consider and lay caution to when returning to use these shelters in the desert... buzz worms, rattle snakes that might have taken up residence inside or other biting critters.

Great adventure out in the desert, James. Glad to see you finding time to spend out there testing your skills and your knowledge. I remember my first solo overnight was a complete failure. My fire was too close and smoked me out; the cold cold night combined with a poorly made tarp shelter meant I had to bail and sleep in my car. Hoping to get out and have a little more success this spring. Deserts are tough, people don't really realize just how tough. James I wanna recommend a Ruger single six. Pros: interchangeable cylinders mean you can shoot .22 and .22 magnum. Gives you real versatility. .22 magnum is good for bigger game and personal defense. .22 mag seems to still be widely available (not many people shoot it) Pro #2 inexpensive pistol. #3 the Western aesthetic of a revolver. I do like your Mark though. I have one of those too, they are a TON of fun.

Maybe a shemagh or just a large bandana. Either one wouldn't take up much space and would be a versatile addition. Also do you ever remove your boots when sleeping in the desert? If so do you leave them upright or prop them upside down to prevent critters from nesting in them overnight?

James, you should heat up some rocks on the camp fire. Bury the rocks where you're going to sleep. See if that keeps the floor heated.

Too bad you didn't have your back packing stove to heat water. The ground is cold and robbing your body of heat where the straw bedding gets compressed. About sleeping in the cold bare headed, I know I've mentioned before to always have a beanie. You have a nice warm winter hat, too, that would've worked great. I second what Randy Yeager said in the comments, too. Live and learn, like you said....LOL. BTW, your flint and steel work was very impressive...well done!
