Could you NOT turn the leaves into the beds, so the worms aren't killed? Just treat the leaves like mulch? That's what I do here in Texas. I top my beds with about 6" of chopped leaves in November, and just transplant right into the bed. I hate putting my shovel into a bed and finding I've sliced a worm in half!!

Our favorite garden tool is a digging fork. We carefully turn the chopped leaves into the soil with the fork as soon as the ground can be worked. In about 2 weeks, most of them have been consumed, and then we add a layer on top that remains there- and is added to-all season. Our worm population explodes using this method. If done carefully just once, early in the season, I believe turning the first leaves into the soil does not harm the worms, or destroy soil structure.

@@backwoodbasics9383 Aha! The difference must be that our soil doesn't freeze. What a difference to garden in different zones! Thank you for your reply. Received your book from Amazon late yesterday; can't wait to start it this evening!
