      No, that's not the reasoning for any of his songs' names. This song is called "Arabesque No. 1" because it is an arabesque (An ornately decorative classical composition). Think of it like L.W. Beethoven titling his symphonies "Symphony No. 1", "Symphony No. 2", and so on.

    This is probably the best rendition of Arabesque No.1 I've heard, better than lots of these other pros.

    • @hellschatt
      @hellschatt 7 років тому +55

      Sorry I gotta disagree. It's not bad per se and you can chose it as your favourite but it's not really better than "lots of pros". There are some mistakes in there and I don't like how he interpreted some parts. I mean that I don't like the interpretation is kind of my opinion, you can defend him from that.
      But you can't defend the fact that he played some eighth notes like quarters with the right hand at 0:48 for example. Even if that part was poco mosso (it isn't) it's just too much of an interpretation and imo simply wrong. He does such mistakes way too often.
      It was not dreamy enough and he tried to be dreamy at the wrong parts. It's overall not as pleasant as it should be.
      I know I'm nitpicking but you gotta praise people like that only when they deserve it.

      +hellschatt You're probably right, and probably a better pianist than I am, but it's all subjective I suppose. Although I've heard of a few other very good renditions, this is one of my favorites. All the technical terms and techniques matter to certain elitists but I just go by the way it makes me feel when I hear the music, perhaps I don't appreciate it the the level that you do but that's the beauty of music right? it can appeal to the masses at every level and the level of their ability. Cheers!

    This is the best way I’ve ever heard this piece played. It literally brought tears to my eyes which even surprised me. Usually, I hear a lot of pros play with too much expression which sounds too intense. This way, however, sounds so much more calm and pleasing to listen to. I don’t have a piano since we’re moving houses, and this just made the wait much better. Sincerely, thank you for such lovely playing!

I wish one day I could play perfectly like you. I'd love to see you play "doctor gradus ad parnassum" by Debussy as well , sorry if I did mistakes , I'm from France :)

    • @jackcarr45
      @jackcarr45 8 років тому +28

      +asia321999 In this piece specifically, you have to know when to press the pedal. I would recommend listening to this recording and writing down when the pedal is lifted on your sheet of music. I always mark pedal lifts with a capital L above the note where I have to lift the pedal. Also, practise getting your notes more even. Each note value should last for exactly the same length of time - this is the hardest part of learning piano, especially when you get to the faster notes, so a lot of time may be required to build finger and wrist strength.

    • @masonhmusic
      @masonhmusic 7 років тому +28

      The Jimi Hendrix Experience One of the most important things you need to do to get clean playing, is practice the piece without pedal (no matter how weird it sounds). And also pay attention to each separate note and the phrasing. A lot of times people play trills and similar quick movements and they smear the notes together, you have to play each individual note cleanly. I still struggle with phrasing but I know its important.

    • @psirus89
      @psirus89 7 років тому +10

      i wouldnt say, I play 100% clean and consistent, but people always tell me I have a very good touch and feel, while playing the piano.
      For me one of the biggest factor was, when I learned to play with only the weight of my fingers, instead of really "pushing" the key.
      Its hard to explain via a youtube comment, but today I just spread my fingers but play with my "whole hand".
      It really pushed me towards the next level and a lot of pieces I played years ago, I play siginificantly better due to this technique.

    Hi Paul. I was wondering if you could do a quick breakdown about the theory behind Debussy's music. I want to be able to play these pieces but I don't just want to know which notes to play, I want to understand them. Some sort of guidance along the lines of 'it's mostly arpeggios in the left hand, and playing around with the pentatonic / whole-note scale in the right hand' (but obviously in more detail) would be great. I've been looking for something like that for ages but can't find it anywhere. Since you seem to have a good grasp of his pieces and piano music in general I thought you'd be really well placed to help. Thanks, Sam.

    It wasn't until I started this piece that I realized I had never done a 2/3 polyrhythm before. It's funny because I'd done 3/4 plenty, but for some reason I can't remember ever being tested on 2/3. Weird huh.

      You got to teach me! I have never been able to do 4 against 3 or 3 against 4,but I can do 2 against 3 really easy!

    • @emlmm88
      @emlmm88 9 років тому +1

      jackcarr45 Well if you already know 2 against 3 then I'd just try converting any 3 against 4 into a 3 against 2 and only playing every other note in the right hand - using the correct fingering of course. If one of the notes is a thumb crossing for example then you would play it like that in the practice, but you would get really good at playing it as 3 against 2 and looking out for every other note, then you could just add in the in between notes and there you go. Try it and tell me if it works.

    *_A Vision_*
    I keep looking at her; this stranger, sitting across from me...why?
    My eyes keep wandering from my book to glance to the left to lay eyes upon her.
    She looks preoccupied, so I don’t think she’ll notice, right?
    ...strange, I know. Me, being distracted from reading my stories. This is very strange, indeed...
    The rickety bumping of the train only bubbles up my nervousness even more.
    The velvet of the seat I'm sitting in is as red as my face; a deep red, which I try to hide with the cover of my book.
    It suddenly feels like it’s only her and I on the train. My breath hitches as she shuffles a bit in her seat.
    Who is she?
    Something compels me to search for the answer, but it feels almost prohibited.
    This train ride has only been 30 minutes, but just by looking at her makes me feel as if I’m committing a treacherous act.
    Like I’m gazing upon the forbidden fruit of the garden of eden.
    My heart is singing a song of longing. A hymn of curiosity and begging to discover;
    I feel if I don’t uncover the truth about this woman of mysterious beauty, illuminated by the sunrise out the train window,
    I may never see her again. If I do not reveal myself, she will fade away like a mirage…
    ...after all, she may as well be a vision. It’s so early in the morning and the circumstances are so rare.
    Is she really even there, sitting across from me, as I’m reading a fairytale, a work of fiction?
    ...maybe I, myself, am in a fairytale.
    Maybe I am on a train to a nighted caim, somewhere hidden away.
    Maybe I am the humble traveler in this tale,
    And she is an enchantress.
    I suppose I’ll never know, though.
    The ricketing has stopped with a foggy woosh of engine steam.
    The woman arises from her velvet seat, as she practically glides across the walkway and into the opened iron door, into the steam.
    I stood from my seat to get one last desperate glance at her, but then, as mysteriously as she arrived, she was gone with the smoke.

    I have played this piece for many many years (although not nearly as good as you) and have listened to countless interpretations, and this is my favorite. I still remember when I was a boy and my piano teacher Mrs. Walker who has long since passed first introduced me to Debussy and I learned Claire de Lune first. Amazing.

  • @swede123

    I’ve been looking for a piece that can help me prepare for Clair de lune , which I am planning to learn next year most likely. I follow no grade level unlike other people, but I play at a high enough level to play Chopin waltzes and Bach inventions. I understand this piece is very different compared to those pieces, but could anybody tell me if you think I might be pushing myself a little too hard by learning this? Any responses would be appreciated!

    • @livepiano1
      @livepiano1 4 роки тому

      I’ve been learning this piece for about three months and just completed it . The Corona Virus isolation spent at home was of value. Now it’s just a matter of practicing it over and over. Like Clair deLune (which I learned last year) I never get tired of playing. I play a Yamaha digital stage piano so it’s fortunate to practice early or late with a good quality Bose headset. I read music but it takes awhile. Using the different instrument (string etc.) modes takes the monotony out of practicing. Both pieces are about the same level in my opinion...you can do it!

    • @swede123
      @swede123 4 роки тому

      Ok thanks! I’m already stuck on the 6th measure (3 against 2) but I know it probably one of the toughest parts you need to learn. How long did it take for you to get down the 3 against 2 part? Right now it feels so difficult, but that’s what they all say it feels like in the beginning.

      I think you should give it a try. I play pieces like moonlight sonata no. 1(probably same level as the songs you play) and its going fairly well for me. The polyrithms are a thing though, i got stuck on them for a while, but can play them well now. Paul has a tutorial on this piece too, check it out. Should make it lots easier.

    I like the Feurich piano very much. It has a wonderful tone. Years ago I visited R. Kassman in SF which was one of the main distributors in the USA. He ended up in a dispute with them because he was selling them above list. I am somewhat sad i didn't buy the beautiful veneer finish one. This was before their financial hardships. I hope that Feurich and other boutique piano companies can survive this electronic phase. There is something wonderful about a 100 year old wooden technology.
