#NickJohnston #thecaptainmeets #schecter
This was such an honor! You're the best, Lee!
+Nick Johnston
Always great to see a guitarist's passion for the instrument having played for so many years.
As of recent years its been the only thing in life that's fully held my interest, so I hope that carries on for me as it has for players like yourself
+Nick Johnston learning from you everyday man :P
so Nice! congrats from Brazil!
glad to see how far you've come since I first started listening (public display of infection) and so many more people are catching on and supporting an amazing talent
Hi Nick, absolutely love your playing, you have been my favourite strat player since I discovered you. It's really your use of dynamics and the way you use the pickup selector to sculpt the aggression in your sound that I love :)
What a great video. Nick is amazing
To say that Nick has changed the way I look at an SSS Strat over the past year or so would be an understatement. Definitely one of my favorite modern players.
I use single coils now. I use to hate them on the bridge.
more Captain Meets episodes please!!
Phenominal guitarist and really nice guy. One of the few instrumental guitar guys whose stuff I dig. Such a great sense of melody and harmony and plays so expressively. Awesome tone too
He is great I didn't like the vocal stuff at all though it was actually insane it's the first album of his I didn't re listen to only listened once what did you think of it ?
I love how genuine and humble Nick is! He's a great player! :D
loving these segments, Misha and now Nick Johnston! Awesome!
This guy is a REALLY good player! These new guys are combining lots of traditional styles and making their own! Great stuff
he's awesome!
Nick is astounding, a bit of a genius and he's about ten I think!
Great interview
I like how Lee in the end turns into the guy Nick was when sitting in the basement watching his friend play :)
Remarkably Human is great stuff.
I'm a lefty who learned to play right. I'm glad I did.
Danny Gatton , Duane Allman and Michael Bloomfield were all left handed people who played right handed guitar... hmm mm ... and as always Lees interviews are superb.
so stealing that lick!
I believe Trevor Rabin and Steve Morse were lefties playing righty as well.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't think that lefty guitars are really necessary.
Because if you've never picked up a guitar or bass, why does it matter which way your guitar is orientated? It's about how you reinforce your playing and how you engrain the muscle memory. So even if I'm a righty, I could've bought a lefty guitar and probably play it really well as long as I put the effort into it.
It's not like they have lefty pianos or lefty violins. I can understand drums a little bit more, but you don't need a specially built instrument for that.
If there aren't any "left handed" pianos, cellos, violas, double bases, flutes, bassoons etc. why the hell are there electric guitars and bas guitars for left handed people? The weird feeling a beginner has when starting out on an instrument is the same regardless of left or right handedness so why do people always make a fuss about it. Nick is an obvious example of unimportance of this issue.
Yes, that's a great idea!
+ovo nisamja Because your hands are doing totally different types of movement. It's better to pick with your stronger hand because picking is much more demanding. Nick even mentions this in the video saying he can't sweep pick like Malmsteen because it's his weak hand.
Oh, I missed that. But still, what about those guys who can play guitar on both sides? And drummers also?
+ovo nisamja I don't know any guitar virtuosos that are ambidextrous. Are there? It takes years to develop good picking and fingerstyle skill, which is typically in your strong hand. Drums are the same thing as piano: the type of movement is the same for each hand, and you are dividing the rhythms. They are both percussion instruments. Guitar requires a unique type of coordination in each hand. Certainly you can swap your handedness by playing "wrong handed" from day one, but you wondered why guitars have handedness.
Haha, ok, you have a good point. I didn't think of it like that. Now I guess there's no point in making a study about it in the end. Haha.
I've seen couple of guitarists who could tap on the guitar like every normal guitarist, but could also tap with the left hand from the above the neck.
Michaelangelo for example can tap in any direction (to some extent), and he has a guitar with two necks, one on the right side, and the other on the left of him. Looks ridiculous and is cheesy as hell, but just as an example.
But when he picks the lefthanded guitar he crosses his hands and again picks with his right hand, and when you mentioned the stronger hand and all, kinda makes sense why.
And I've seen couple of other guitarists who at the time seemed could play from whatever side, but it was all mainly tapping.
I've seen one guy in person who was left handed but he didn't bother stringing his guitar the standard way, but he just flipped the right handed guitar and learned how to play everything upside down. It was a weird sight for sure.
He looks like Randy Blythe’s younger brother.
Anderton's taught me how to use the Google.
what a good kid chops aren't bad either
this is my dads friend!
If Guthrie Govan and Joe Satriani had a child, he would look like Mr. Johnston.
+Drew Dawkins omg yeah he does look like joe sat and a bit of guthrie
He has the the face of Joe satriani maybe and the hair of Guthrie Govan
Drew Dawkins HAHA SPOT ON
Satriani used to have long hair, I hope Nick didn't inherit that part
I don't know about looks. But definitely, nick sounds like Guthrie and satriani'r child.
He looks like hairy Joe Satriani
cannot be unseen.
You mean 1990's Joe Satriani?
His hairy arms really remind me of satch
I love these" The captain meets" videos! I really like Nick's videos! He's a beast of a guitar player!
I'm really good at multitasking.....Example: Listening to Nick Johnston and posting all of my gear on Craigslist at the same time.
Holy crap this guy is good. Really friendly too; it's always nice when the best players are cool guys too.
I dare to say that the really good players are almost always nice people, now those that think they are good are always dick heads!
+Jon Gomez I'd put it this way: Most people who are dickheads to others and think they are good, are actually shit players. You never see people like Nick, Mick, Danish Pete, Rob, Bea and the like posting stupid comments.
+Bloodlines6262 Nick is so nice because he is Canadian hahaha :P
+Bloodlines6262 The only players that aren't nice are the ones that are bitter and suck anyways.
+Jacob Walker Not a joke. I lived in Canada for awhile and I can't beliebe how much nicer people are there in general.
If Nick shaved his head, he would look like Satriani's little brother. lol
Great playing man!
cleremond looks like ben stiller to me
That's because Satriani and Ben are second cousins twice removed.
The key to master your art: time and isolation.
Two things almost nobody has today.
This was a very inspiring and humble video - thanks :-)
+instrumentenfreak Thats why its so key to inspire kids to start music early. Once life takes over, it's very hard to find time to sit down and completely dedicate to music.
+Matt Whitmire Most kids don't have the concentration to sit in the same place for long repeating the same thing over and over, that's why not everyone is a virtuoso, practice is everyting. But honestly let kids be kids, many great guitarists started late.
Enter 2020
This post aged like milk.
@@Julius_Seizure Laughed so hard 😂
At 2:14 I was like 'damn, Captain Lee picked that up fast'
way too fast xD
#leeandertonsoloshredguitaralbum
the first solo is the one in Polyphia's Champagne, kinda.
+ADV Nick Johnston guest recorded the solo for champagne!
Yes, I know :) Great solo by the way. Nice 'interview', keep them coming!
+ADV yeah it was i caught that too lmao he thought he could sneak that in without anyone noticing i bet
Has the Captain ever recorded a project? He has a great touch and feel which would sound awesome if he did a bluesy project.
I'd love to see the Captn meet Greg Koch.
I agree Greg is absolutely amazing and the humor would be outstanding.
this would be amazing
+mankindooo
Yeah agreed... I get a kick outta seeing my fav UA-cam guitar subs getting together for a jam / chat
+mankindooo YES
YES 👍
It's amazing to see Nick doing so well, he is absolutely ripping it up musically, technically and he is a super nice guy. I can't wait to hear what he does next.
nick looks like a young guthrie goven
+ky l I think he kinda looks like Satch....with hair.
+deltafit nailed it!
+ky l Also, Ben Stiller with a wig.
+deltafit It's the arm hair
+ky l Oh my god I would die to see a jam between these two, crazy-skilled master guitarists and great dudes too!
vet gary clark jr in!
I am halfway into listening to "Remarkably Human". Nothing in this interview is an indicator of how awesome that album is. There is some real *music* on there
When he first started I wasn't that impressed- sure he's fast, etc- but I really grew to like him. Lovely chap!
What the fuck do you keep turning the amp off? so fucking annoying!
Mickeyislowd because they don't want the amp hum in the video
This guy seems to be so nice and lovely !!!!
Oh, by the way it would be really interesting to have Plini someday !
Great interview. Amazing player. Definitely need more Captain meets.
As a lefty, I can certainly relate to the inherent discrimination the industry hands to all lefties on a silver platter, but ultimately playing lefty on stage is enough of an anomaly that people will at least give us a listen before they write us off as another show off, shredder. Its important to make sure our first musical message an important one ( Jimi Hendrix) in that it challenges the listener to think quickly, so the possibility of gaining a listener is there for the taking.... Beyond that, it SUX being a lefty!!....lol
What song is that thing Nick was playing at 5:23 . It's bugging me cause it also sounds familiar but can quite remember where it's from
+blackknightkanos Blink 182 - What's my age again
Andertons Music Co Haha can't believe you guys replied. You guys rock. :))
He briefly plays Stay Together For the Kids, then he plays Whats My Age Again, then he goes back to stay tgether for the kids
No clue who is is, but 1:30 in and I'm blown away. Amazing playing
+Steven Chabot You're in for a treat then!
To be honest.
Intro of this video was Nick doing some random noise and Captain lee just making confused groove due to Nick random noise.
Genuinely cool guy who plays like a demon. I love this guy!
It's hilarious how much Nick looks like a hippie version of Joe.
Two nice, humble and talented guys chatting and playing guitars. What could be more entertaining? Thanks Lee & Nick!
Amazing documentary on Nick's channel.
stop turning his amp to standby, we cant here the buzz. lLET HIM PLAYYYY
Thank you Captain for doing this. What a pleasant surprise to get my morning coffee, check out the latest on your channel and find this great video.
THIS dude looks like alice cooper haha.
those shecters are nice but I just can't get past the cheap looking headstock...
Looks like a Suhr headstock to me. Definitely not cheap
Joe Jenkins to me it reminds me of Yamaha or samick lol I prefer the headstock schecter has on their hellraiser is all
timjenkins502 Yeah I can see the yamaha/behringer vibe to it. I'm a sucker for any strat really! Plus you have an awesome last name so I can't give you a hard time about the headstock.
+Joe Jenkins haha yeah man killer name. I've never played a suhr or one of those schecter but I'm sure they are awesome
+kellyisvlogging yes we are picky...which is a good thing!! keeps the market versitile and competitive.
Im 40 now. My family was un-musical. I asked my father to buy me a guitar. He said NO! After some time my mother came back home with a box and there was a spanish acoustic guitar in it. My father didnt know she bought it for me. It was for right hand players. I was left hand. Yes, I WAS, because I learned to play right hand because of that guitar. Then life took me away from playing and just 2 years ago I began going back into guitars again, still play right hand. Makes me wonder how would I play today if I've got a left hand guitar in the first place ... Still when I play "air guitar" I do it with a left hand, which feels natural, but actual guitar I cant play lefty because it just feels wrong.
+Che Guebuddha honestly it doesn't matter what dexterity you start with. either way you're starting from scratch and learn to play with what you have.
Captain Lee meets Pete Thorn?
Great interview Lee and what a nice guy he is too
What a cool guy. Just comes across so genuine and in love with guitar
Steve Morse is also left handed. Kiko Loureiro too, as well as a number of other famous players.
michael angelo batio is left handed too
You're wrong but you're right...Oh wait he plays both sides nevermind
Mark Knopfler
errrrr did he just say he is 28!!!... ok i give up guitar.... and internet.
Nick is such an incredible talent... And I don't think anybody uses their pickup selector quite like him.
+Corey Clark I don't think anyone uses the guitar quite like him! He's got a crazy almost fusion style
The pickup selector is one thing but he also couples that with constantly working the volume and tone.
Wicked interview!! Nicks latest album is superb!!!! Great guy great player and NO Ego!!
those eyebrows are thicker than my goatee
Nick really reminds me of like alternate dimension guthrie govan. Love the playing, Lee as well
Nick is one of my new favorite players..keep these videos up Lee! Such a joy to watch..
meets plini please
Nick saying that learning to write music is just as hard or even harder than learning to play is such a relief haha
awesome!!!!! I really like this series of LEE MEETS
I first heard of nick johnston in pmt shop a few days ago. This guy can play like a beast.
Checkout his video in Keith merrow studio.
I own a 1985 original David Schecter Strat and it's one guitar I shall hold on to, together with a 71' Les Paul.
Superb playability and sound. Possibly the best neck I ever played... \m/
Nick Johnston the long lost child of satriani & Guthrie.
Capt meets Jason Richardson maybe?
He is so chilled, self aware and polite. Could hear him talk like forever. Man no i guess i get those us-sitcom jokes about beeing canadian 😂😂. Although i like that very much compared to „HERE I AM FUCK THIS FUCK THAT MERRICA FUCK YEA. USA NUMBER 1“ kinda vibe. One thing though is freaking me out. If you ned to touch and place your hair every. 2 seconds you probably wanna cut them 😂😂😂😂😂
The captain and Nick J. Awesome.
My favorite guitarists are Nick Johnston, Plini, and AJ Minette
Echt cool ! LETS JUDGE ME !!!!! Instrumental Rock Guitar Gunnar Ostheim BREAKAWAY Thank You ;)
there's no point in a left-handed guitar in my opinion since all left-handed players i know play normal guitars without any issues, there may be some advantages and disadvantages but in the end it's all about training and you have to do that anyway.
Captain... Do you think you could get some more unusual players? Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Mark Ribot, Will Sergeant, Nels Cline?
To my shame never heard of Nick. And honestly didn't quite like his playing here, maybe have to check the studio records later, maybe just not my cup of tea. However, enjoyed the episode. You know, Lee, strangely, your vids give me this kind of feeling that everything is fine, everything is gonna be alright. Sense of stability if you like. I'm not even playing guitar anymore for quite a few years, but watching every episode and always waiting for the next one. Thanks, you guys are making a good good job.
Nice guy. Two nice guys actually. Qu: does it not wear stuff out to keep switching to standby? Or maybe the buzz/hiss is too much next to your ear...! What is sure, your shows help keep an old man motivated.
Bring back NICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG Nick Johnston + Gavin Harrison , 2 of my favourite musicians of all time collaborating that is INCREDIBLE.
i'm surprised why nobody gives a f**k about the strat looking, suhr headstock schecter guitar. But everybody blew up their mind in the PRS silver sky. #justsayin
I didn't know Nick was just 28! Wow!
I'm all about the Japanese made schecters lol. with the Japanese schecter sd II, you get the schecter custom shop strat look but with a better bolt on ultra access joint, gotoh tuners, schecter monstertone II and super rock II, Floyd, quilted maple top, made in Japan, and all of this around $1000 :))
interesting, I hear a lot of satch in your playing, surprised he was not on your list of dudes, Nick. But I guess Jeff beck is a dude of Satch's so maybe it came down the pipeline just the same... hmm
Mike Bloomfield, duane allman, danny gatton, all left handed who played right handed....hmmm.... always the best interviews with great guitarists well done sir...
I'd love to see The Captain Meets John Mayer :)
I don't mind the endless shredding, and I don't mind random pieces of music, from bygone eras. I enjoy the personable effort that the Capt OR LEE which ever you prefer. I m not of a want to take this as a demonstration of a really artistic spurt of flash playing. I like Lee for the effort he uses to get the message out to the masses both in reference to the guitar, and for the sake of his business. I respect lee for his genuine professionalism and his simple antics that are made that way for effect. That this young person is giving snippets of what it takes or what has been his take on playing and learning the angst of it all.We all could use the opportunity to understrand that it really takes the best of talent and skill or training to get the technical proficiency to be a good guitarists. 20 fold for the shred or high art of those who play it without thought or with great precision. Effort to get others up infront on the guitar and on the screen.....8 thumbs up
This guy is fuckin' COOL! Maybe there is some hope for rock n' roll after all. Thanks for the introduction, Lee.
Fucksakes Captain, Yngwie isn't german ! :p You make him sound like a nazi soldier from an english war movie or something :-)
Yay I'm also left handed but I play guitar right handed. My right is also the weak hand for this kind of stuff. I also play piano and I actually notice that by doing a lot of stuff with the right hand has increased the stamina in my right hand but my left hand is my more dexterous hand.
FORTY MINUTES LATER... Hahaha, Sponge Bob.
Hey I've got the same weird handedness quirks as Nick Johnston! Annnnd I also play guitar :P
Nick stole that lick from Stevie. And Stevie stole it from Jimi. and Jimi stole it from Albert. And so it goes. I love music. And I love stealing great ideas.
I love these videos where the captain meets a wide variety of different players to talk about gear. Hopefully he will continue priducing new material in this genre. Great stuff!
From 2:14 to 2:16 it actually looked like Lee was getting the riff, only for the illusion to be cruelly shattered!
Left hander here, apart from writing and shooting a bow left handed, I do everything else (hockey, guitar) right handed.
Left hander who learned to play proper guitars checking in.I wish I was half as good as Nick though, what a monster player.
im a lefty but play righty, i got a free acoustic when i was in guitar class in high school and i was gonna try to turn it upside down but gave up when i couldnt figure out how to take the nut off to switch it lol but i say i never really had any trouble with my fret hand doing anything, and i started off solely as a metalcore guy, it was my pick hand that struggled but it eventually caught up so i honestly think that playing right handed makes way more sense as a lefty imo, and probably would make more sense for rightys to play lefty! i guess i was kinda forced to learn to pick better since metalcore involves a ton of fast downpicking and the 10 years i played solely metal has helped me now that i got into texas blues in a way lol
