The whole of this subject becomes ever more weird as papers previously embargoed come to light. We have recently learned that not only did the cabinet not decree that Margaret would have lost her allowance from the Civil List, but that the Prime Minister Eden, himself divorced, actually supported the marriage. Furthermore, although the Queen herself might have experienced some embarrassment as Supreme Governor (not "the head") of the Church of England, but later on she would have softened, witness that she stayed in touch with her cousins child the Earl of Harewood when he got divorced. It was only the public duties that Margaret would have had to give up, and the rite to being called "Ma'am".
It is becoming increasingly clear that when Margaret met up with Townsend again after his two years of exile, they discovered that one of them no longer felt the same - I suspect it was Margaret because she was always a stickler for the curtseying and "Ma'am" being used.
Well she did offer up abundant proof that she actually wasn't more than her title and privileges and she later said that she knew that marriage with Peter wouldn't have worked. The age difference would have split them up after a while. And of course she did marry AAJ and we all know how well that worked out. I don't this she could have made marriage work with anyone. But of course we have decades of hindsight to say that and no one knew that at all at the time.
She said that in Hindsight, tho. She never actually “put it to the test,” did she?
The damage the Royal family and its courtiers do by not just allowing people to marry the people they love. Imagine the pain and suffering that could have been avoided had Charles married Camilla 50 years ago, Margaret Peter etc etc
You have to remember that this all took place in the 1950s. First the Church of England flatly refused to allow Margaret to marry the divorcee Peter Townsend, then the entire democratically elected government - all on grounds of Christian morality and citing the Royal Marriages Act of 1772. Remember, Eden was no courtier, he was british Prime Minister and direct successor of Winston Churchil. You can blame Elizabeth and her courtiers for some mistakes, but they did not invent this law. And you can bet that Elizabeth still had all of her sister's misery in her mind, when she asked the bishops to find a way for Charles and Camilla to marry 40 years later.
@@thomasplinguidy4588 In another clip, she discussed the issue with the PM and pointed out that several cabinet members had been divorced and remarried, or married divorcees. There was a level of hypocrisy here: the royal family had to uphold standards that no one else would. You can say that's the price of being royalty, but you can understand how it would stick in the craw of the royal family.
You are forgetting that they didn't make this up for the Royals. The Monarch is the head of the Church, and thus the Royal family must follow t he rules of the Church. The Church does not like divorce, or divorced people marrying.

Too bad she didn’t have it in mind earlier. Maybe DIANA would still be alive. And maybe even Happily so.
But in the end, MARGARET was clearly Not Able (nor Interested) in living without all those Royal “bells and whistles.”
When she was presented with Just That Option, she put PETER in her “rear view mirror.”
Then went on to make Even Worse choices. smh
Why is Eden portrayed here like an crackhead you would find in some ally in LA. He was in barbiturates but it doesn't have an jittering, anxious and edgy feeling but more solemn and relaxing feeling.
He was actually on a mix of amphetamines (Benzedrine) and opiates. His body developed an increasing tolerance due to his constant using of these meds, thus they became less effective. That, combined with his multiple illnesses continuing to progress caused him constant discomfort, and thus fidgeting while he was sitting. His mannerisms were portrayed accurately in this scene.

Couldn't a new bill be introduced in parliament to amend Royal Marriages Act, 1772 to allow margaret's marriage into place ?
In the voting, I hope it would have passed and the public opinion might have changed the attitude of orthodox MPs then and would have eased the situation and proved helpful for the members of Royal Family like Prince Charles, Princess Margaret and Even Duke of Windsor.
1.) The law exists for a reason. People who are in the higher levels in the line of succession have to have a lifestyle and values
that would allow them to be successful as monarch.
2.) The Royal Marriages Act, 1772 does not specify that the monarch's future wife be a virgin. That is what the Queen Mum,
uncle Dickie and Louis Mountbatten wanted. I think that HMTQ would have not interfered with Charles and Camilla
3.) *Duke of Windsor was pro-Nazi as was Wallis Simpson. His abdication was a blessing for the UK!*
We no longer live in a situation like the Middle Ages (or even the 19th century) where death was a frequent visitor, rather than
an exception for people (btw: Penicillin was not invented until near the end of WW2 ... 1945, the mid-20th century) However,
one accurate and successful terrorist attack could wipe out the immediate royal family; *leaving the siblings and cousins very*
*close to the throne.*

The Duke of Windsor abdicated
because he really did not want
to be king. The PM and the
cabinet also wanted him to
abdicate -- They accomodated
him. Wallis Simpson was
Edward VIII 's "get out of jail"
card. He coerced her into
marrying him by his threats
of suicide. She had told him
not to abdicate.
