For me it's incredibly spirit lifting song about beeing tired and beaten down by hard life, but keeping getting up and going on.

This is absoluletly beautiful
This isn't actually "The Skye Boat Song" (which has different lyrics, and is by Sir Harold Boulton), but "Sing Me a Song of a Lad That Is Gone", by Robert Louis Stevenson, published soon after the former song, clearly inspired by the former's chorus, and intended to be sung to the same air. Genders were swapped from "lad" to "lass" for the Outlander Theme's female protagonist.
The air (melody) to which this is set was written by Anne Campbelle MacLeod, based on a half-remembered version of the older Gaelic song "Cuachag nan Craobh" (Cuckoo of the Trees).

True. The Skye Boat song is about bonnie prince Charlie and tells the tale of him escaping, disguised as a maid, to the isle of Skye, after his defeat in the battle of Culloden. They, as the shows producers and the people in charge, probably named their title song 'Skye Boat Song' to make the song as an entity fit the character, the show, and part of its story as a whole.
Probably not as complicated as that - the air Anne Campbelle MacLeod wrote is generally known as "The Skye Boat Song" because she based it on a song she heard while being herself ferried across Loch Coruisk.
Boulton's Jacobite lyrics ultimately take their name - and the theme of someone being ferried on a boat - from that of the melody, and this is likely just a case of going with the more familiar name than the more appropriate one.
Peter Walker Hmmm yeah, probably. I like to read too much into things... Either way, it makes for a wonder- and truly beautiful theme song.

Though I could be remembering that wrong it's been about 15 years since I last sang it

I sang this song in my sophomore year for my school's talent show for my Granny who passed away the summer before I started my sophomore year. The version that came closest to my mothers lullaby. She sang this and Loch Lomond when I was little. Add the parting glass and those are the ones I sing to my son. He and I both love yours though keep it up.

Love it, Peter! Like many others (I'm sure) I requested the Skye Boat Song in an email a few years back. Had a little hangup when I heard you using the Stevenson lyrics, but the message of this one is certainly more accessible than Boulton's Jacobite story.
