Korea's obsession with drug laws is always so fascinating considering that they allow and encourage drinking to such a dangerous degree (which is also a drug). Alcoholism is killing so many and they don't bother to consider it in the law-making, very sad.
Alcohol is can be drunk if you want to...it is not forced for most times...but drugs, that is in the form of chocolates, etc which is made to consume by any age of people without their consent or their knowledge, which is bad....so alcoholism is individual problem, drugs is mass problem...think now
@@kavitharagipani4798 You don't make sense at all. Who forces drugs on people by putting it in chocolate? Alcoholism isn't an individual problem, it's something that affects your family, your work or worse, if you drink and drive it's a danger to all. And it's a societal problem when the culture is basically urging people to drink a lot, like in SK. The line between drugs and alcohol is an artificial line that isn't easy to excuse anymore.
The w33d thing is crazy in my opinion. If the government doesn‘t allow it in SK that is one thing but to tell the citizens what to do when they are abroad is too much.
I also don’t understand how if they found out you smoke w33d or be involved with any kind of drug, you get dragged and cancelled, especially if you’re an idol or kdrama actor/actress. But drinking your body weight of alcohol is part of the culture and is encouraged. Ummmmm, alcohol is literally a drug as well, just in liquid form.
I think it's beautiful. We definitely need this in my country as well. It's a way to control ur ppl in a good positive way. Now I see why Koreans behave well overseas and don't do criminal stuff.
It is not only absurd but also a violation of the sovereignty of other states. If a country's laws would supersede the law of the land where its citizens reside, then for instance a man could beat his wife in Germany given that in his country that action is legal. It is shameless for the SK government to attempt circumventing national laws of other countries and thus infringing on their sovereignty.
3:36 I can actually answer this question b/c New Zealand has this same law about weed. They do blood tests. Weed can still be present in your bloodstream for a month so in New Zealand, they take blood tests when you get back. I know this because two of my friends from New Zealand wanted to try weed in Canada, and said they had to try it over a month before they left for New Zealand. I'm going to assume they do the same thing in Korea if they suspect that you did drugs abroad
Your friends were either lying, or misinformed. I've told cops directly to their face that I smoked weed (in NZ), and they did nothing. They don't care. They have to catch you in the act, and even then, you will probably just get a warning. There's no way they're testing NZ citizens at the border. They have neither the time or money for that.
As an expat who lived in Korea for more than 7 years I'll say this: 1. You can do it, but don't travel or get a job where medical tests are required. Also, snitches do exist but so does Mary Jane. They're strict for sure. 2. You need a VPN or most sites are gonna be blocked. Not all hotels or motels have the secret cameras. Some places are regularly swept clean, but just try to avoid the shady cheap places. Or you might see your lover featured on one of those websites. 3. I guess Koreans are genetically prone to gambling addiction, so many actually do it overseas. But there are always places where you can find people gambling in private. They even made a Korean drama about it. 4. I saw so many people with tats. My friend got one, and I'm pretty sure the guy wasn't a doctor. 5. Police don't really care, but it depends on the city or place. Most places don't really care even though there are signs and CCTV. Smoking zones are utilized for the most part. 6. LOL Too true. They always make the announcement in the PC Cafés, and kids gotta get up and leave to go back home. I even got IDed one time. Some PC Bangs are really strict. 7. Never knew. But I know how possessive some Koreans can be. My ex wouldn't let me see my friend girls anymore. Even deleted their contact numbers, but I had one of those girls. Not all of them are like that.
Smoking in public is illegal in Korea??? But I see that shit EVERYWHERE I go here! Literally can't walk without seeing a smoker every street corner or in the middle of a block.
There are a lot of laws in Korea that exist just for the sake of existing...but they aren't really enforced...still. if u piss of a police officer while holding a cigarette they will probably not let it slide...but otherwise idk 😅😂
@@DorieBee-BARElynecessary Same, I'm in shock because coming from a country where smoking is considered rude/gross I was horrified by the number of smokers everywhere, it seems so normalized here. Even women just smoke openly on the street
If someone has an asshole neighbor here in Korea who is constantly smoking indoors even after warning and being politely asked not to, would they be able to report him to the police then? Asking for a friend.
I think it's really weird how weed is so stigmatized and regulated in modern Korea, but the plant has been in Korea for thousands of years and a really important part of Korean history.
I think it’s odd they stigmatize doing drugs period in korea, but will encourage each other to drink their body weight in alcohol. Alcohol is literally a drug as well, just in liquid form.
Drugs destroyed millions of young people all over the world. For those of you who think drug use is cool go work with children who come out of broken homes where the mom and dad are so addicted the kids were starving and abused physical and sexual. It's just sick.
I knew about a few of these already, but the smoking one is crazy to me. I knew there were specific areas where you shouldn't smoke because i see the no smoking signs, but I still see smokers any time i walk outside. It's also definitely crazy how Korea controls what its citizens do when they aren't even in Korea! On one hand, how would they know if a Korean did something while abroad, but on the other hand, if they did find out, it's illegal so they would get in big trouble.
I remember reading an idol or a person was on vacation in another country and smoked some weed one of the so call friend let it be known when the person retuned to korea they were put in jail that really suprised me .
@@0xyGen_2.p0 From what I've read there have been times when there was no proof just words from someone's mouth and other people jump in because of hate has ruined people's lives .
@@0xyGen_2.p0 I'm not surprised that it is a law, I'm more surprised that it's a law in Korea specifically, just because of the sheer amount of people I see smoking. Not inside of course, but outside. You'd think that if it was a law, there wouldn't be so many people doing it, but clearly that law is not enforced.
Can you imagine the paranoia of Koreans in other countries? You have to be so obedient in your own country that it restricts your free thinking. When you go on holiday, you can't relax and be free. But there may be some that go to other countries to be free and smoke etc in private but you should be able to enjoy yourselves in public without being on edge.
With the popularity of Tattoos in Korea these days, I really wish they would create a separate education/accreditation course specifically for it. Like you mentioned, becoming a doctor is too much to just do tattoos, but I think it's a good idea for them to have some medical knowledge. So it would be nice if they had a schooling program specifically for tattoo artists to become legal practitioners, but have them learn some potential health risks/sanitary requirements in replacement of a full doctor license.
@@powbobs tattoos are artistic. The body is the canvas. For most folk who get tattoos they hold a personal meaning. Yes, some can be tacky especially daft ones that folk tend to get while drunk on holiday or by letting their friend with a tattoo gun draw on them but those are more the exception rather than the rule.
In Scotland they have to have a specific license to tattoo as it is classed as a medical procedure. Everyone who wants a tattoo must fill out a form with various health details as strict regulations are in place. That said, you still get some who are dodgy so word of mouth for reputation of the artist is also key. To be safe, you have to do your research on the artist/studio to be sure of the hygiene and quality of the artist you wish to employ. I currently have 6 tattoos and will be having another done in the new year.
@@GMiller75 No. I have never seen a tattoo that any rational person would frame and put on their wall as a piece of art. It’s just bad graffiti. Calling someone who injects ink into someone’s skin an artist is hilariously delusional.
I uses to hate, hate, hate, going out in Korea because everybody smoked. These days I love, love, love, going out in Korea since the nasty smokers can't smoke inside of the building anymore. Finally Korean government smartened up regarding this issue.
I loved the drug laws in Korea. They were awesome. I have sensory processing disorder and the smell of weed gives me a meltdown. I hate it and the smell carries. It is disgusting. Also drugs are associated with trafficking and crime that hurts a lot of people including children internationally. The porn restriction is also great. I work in a school in England and students see it on their smartphone when they are 12. All adult Korean guys use VPN so it doesn't affect them. Duck duck go is the search engine foreigners use with VPN. Korean kids dont have accidental porn use as much as other countries.
I’ve been listening all the way up to the game cafés segment with YT in background over my Bluetooth. I grabbed the phone to back up a bit because I missed a point from irl distraction - and then noticed you had subtitles??? Your diction is clear as day, you absolutely do not need subs to be understood!
Yeah, but making tattooing illegal is actually a major health hazard. In most countries, tattoo artist need to be professionally licensed: they need a permit that can show customers that they follow safety regulations (sterile needles etc). You know it's a safe artists because they have the papers to show it. If you make tattooing illegal, there is no way to ensure that there is a standardized, regulated level of hygiene. Tattoo artists will be able to do whatever they want. Most of the time this is fine (because of word of mouth you kinda know who the good artists are) but there will always be some fuckers that will ruin it for everyone. Just recently I watched a UA-cam video of a guy getting tattooed in Korea while drunk (which you should NEVER do because alcohol acts as a blood thinner). The artists gets away with this shit simply because the whole thing is done underground. This wouldn't have happened if there were actual, legal safety guidelines regulated by the government.
@@DearMariska I completely agree. Here in Canada, where like the majority of people (including the ELDERLY, no joke) have tattoos, VERY few ppl have had airborn diseases be an actual issue b/c of the strict safety regulations the government has implemented. I think it's even illegal to give a tattoo to a clearly drunk or high person
Only if you go to a tattooist/piercer who doesn't follow proper procedures, use sterile needles, etc and no reusing. Our tattoo places in Australia are very closely monitored and they are spotlessly clean. I've had several tattoos at my local tattoo place without any issues.
The part about drugs use including weed while overseas, p0rn and smoking in public is very much true from where I am - Singapore. The airport police do random checks on flights inbound from Amsterdam - pee test, that is how they find out if you have weed in your system. There are always ways to get access to xxx materials online nowadays. Smoking gets you fined, repeated offences can get you into greater fines or jail time.
In the U.K. Financial abuse is now punishable and can have a sentence of up to 5 years. So the idea is then -abusers can't use money to control their wives.
My google account actually asked me to verify my ID whenever doing researches that could be for >19. I noticed this the first time when I was looking up Zico Eureka's mv. Excellent and insightful video, thank you! As for open relationships, I'm sure there are those out there who are able to maintain that balance, but personally I've never seen an open relationship lasti more than a couple years before jealousy and bitterness destroy it.
Porn is a poison in society so I disagree, I think more countries should ban it. That is one thing I like about your country. You can meet your “human needs” without porn. Porn creates so many toxic consequences. I like some of the moral laws you have. Better than in the west. Social responsibility is lacking and sexual responsibility and morality is becoming less and less, it’s a shame.
Something most Koreans don’t know is that SK was the first Asian country to legalize medical marijuana then Thailand legalized medical a few months later. Then Thailand legalized it to incentivize tourism. Koreas drug hesitancy might stem from the Opium trade but as marijuana was a native plant to Korea, it actually has roots becoming outlawed to the Korean War and GI’s would get high and return to base. So they had the leader jump on board the War on Drugs that was booming in the US and that’s how it happened. Pre-war, people would just pick it from the side of the war and smoke a little. Usually as a home pain remedy. I feel like I should wait to hear everything before writing… Also what I usually say for people to understand the concept of overseas drug use for Koreans is that as a Korean Citizen, you are expected to follow the laws of the country. When you leave Korea, you don’t stop becoming a Korean Citizen. So it would be like Murder or Rape. If you do it overseas doesn’t mean you didn’t do a crime. Similar to how people do sex tourism. Where they travel from high age of consent countries to low age of consent countries to rape children. If you leave Korea and have sex with a child, even if it’s legal in that country, you will still be charged with rape when you get back to Korea. The US has laws that apply to their citizens when abroad such as sex with anyone under 18 no matter the age of consent in the country AND the age of consent in your state since some states have consent laws lower than 18 years old.
It’s reinforced by forced deportation from the country you are in back to Korea to be tested and tried. Happened to a bunch of kids who were posting on SNS (social media) that they were smoking weed in Canada while there for college.
Even in America I wish people couldn’t smoke in the street. I am allergic to the stuff. Same with pot. American health needs to look at pot for use with regards to allergies and mental ability. For many users it can make them mentally unwell. While others have good effects. But the smoke is bad and I am allergic to it. I was wearing bc masks in LA way before pandemic. Mostly because it smells like pee and pot. Lol
You don’t have to smoke pot -there are edibles. It’s much less dangerous than any other illegal drug - while alcohol is about the most dangerous drug & is legal. The hypocrisy is real
@@teleriferchnyfain I am allergic to the plant. Also allergic to alcohol. I agree that alcohol is actually worse in general as my partner died from his use. Both do have major impacts on the brain chemistry as well as anything we ingest. Gut is first brain, this feeds the nuero brain and the brain feeds the heart and nerve brain via the elements we ingest. For example the reason why we have hangovers is actually brain swell due to blocking of vitamin b. More it happens it creates micro bleeds. When we have memory missing it’s due to severe swells or micro bleeds from lack of vitamin b getting delivery to the brain. For some the drugs we take regulate chemicals in the brain… but all amino acids are regulators for senses, mental health, and functionality of organs. Certain drugs block the creation of these amino acids.
@@katyschildmeyerksapparelde2441 YOU are allergic. Most people are not. Pot is on the same level (or lower) of danger as caffeine in fact, while alcohol kills more people than heroin. Scientific fact.

Increased depression for people that hail from Norway, Sweden, Finland, and some scots/Irish. Studies on genetics and pot.

As a European law student the consumption of weed being illegal in South Korea, I understand. But it also being illegal outside of koran territory, that just blows my mind. Territorial law just flies out of the window. Being immediately incarcerated, meaning no rights and protection against the system it’s just madness to me. I’m curious if it’s really the case about it being truly illegal or if it’s an abuse.

They aren't as guarded around consent and touch in schools. Kids will run up and ask to sit on your lap and ask for a hug. In American schools and kindergartens there's way more rules around touch. Also kids and toilets. Some kids will literally come out with their pants down asking for help and they are 7 yrs old. Everyone is unfazed. Farmers pulling out their d and peeing in front of me on the side on the road. Happened a lot. Broad daylight. Kissing booth houses and business clubs with secret nude staff etc in private rooms etc. Massage parlors etc. Having "signs" and location right near normal shops and even school bus stops. Massage parlors are also illegal for liscence in Korea unless you are blind and the work os reserved for them. Never saw it affect anyone. Not legal but culturally done.. korean adjussis just coming up to foreign girls and asking if they are prostitutes in broad day light asking for rates. Happened to me and I was wearing teacher clothes at 1pm. Im sure Thai and Vietnamese women abroad don't get that anymore and those that do... the guys KNOWS he is racist as hell.
The assessment I've made on why Korea and other nations in Northeast Asia have similar laws are largely due to influence from western organized religion influences in the 19th and 20th century. South Korea I find has been subject to a significant amount of influence from religious organizations affiliated or similar to the motive of the John Birch Society. Please let me know what you think.
3:32 Just to answer your question - weed is detectable in a blood sample or urin sample for up to 7 days, so if you returned to SK and were randomly asked to submit to testing upon arrival, you could get caught that way 🤷♀
Ohhh now I understand! I watched a Korean series where a baseball player was blackmailed because he gambled in a different country once… I was like what is the big deal but… gosh well this sucks! And I was in Amsterdam last week.. would’ve sucked if I had to go to prison because of a freaking brownie 😄
Great video! Weed is still illegal in the US at the federal level. If you are caught with drugs at the border, you may be subject to fines and other penalties. Likewise it is illegal to transport weed interstate (that places it in the federal jurisdiction.) There are drug dogs at US ports as well. I read about some wealthy Korean being investigated by the SK government for gambling in Macau not too long ago. Thanks for doing this one.
Is exhibition (18+) considered illegal? It’s face to face relations (consensually of course) but is it considered similar to 18+ content in terms of law? It’s not recorded. But people still watch them do things. (Sorry for the heavy censorship. I don’t want to get striked.)
Interesting hearing what is illegal in Korea. Laws are a reflection of a societies norms and values from past to present. The drug laws may have been a response to the Chinese Opium Wars but need to be modified for weed and educate the public. Porn as illegal suppresses human desires. Like drugs pushes the activity underground and drives up crime like spy cams, trafficking, blackmail in addition to societal shame. Great cultural and legal education.
The devils lettuce is totally legal across Canada now for both medical and recreational use and I’m pretty sure we have a really high passport like tolerance in other countries - Canadians are always super nice remember? Everyone likes us Lol

smoking in public is also illegal in my country, which is good for m bc I have asthma and being around smoke sets it off. I went to Japan and it's legal and not always sectioned off so that was SUPER weird then I came to Korea like YES I CAN GO OUT WITHOUT FEAR!
The fact that Korea is like "you are mine, wherever you are, so you follow the countries rules, even if you are in another country, where it's illegal". It's pretty weird to me too. How about Korean Americans ? 🤔 I guess too if they have the Korean citizenship.
^ the drug thing makes sense. But doesn’t Korea have a big drinking culture? Like you can die down the road from over drinking through the years. You can’t die from weed. Although I wonder if Korea has as many drunk drivers as the US
Ok the 1st and 3rd ones are wild to me. The fact that you can still get in trouble for doing something outside your country just blows my mind. And I’m curious about the last one. So I seen something about in Japan where if you catch your spouse having an affair and also aware of who the affair is with, that you can not only sue your spouse but the person they’re having the affair with as well. Does Korea have something similar to this?
In Australia it's illegal to basically smoke anywhere near shops or food places. It's not enforced by police but people will let you know also the price is like $30 AUD for a pack of 20's. buuuuut there is an abundance of illegal cigarettes sold undercounter for much cheaper and a lot of Australians now Vape. Australia has just made nicotine prescription only. It's crazy.
Nice video, didn't know some of thous stuff. Actually Your first point has nothing to do with strength of ones country's passport. As You pointed out weed is legal in some European countries and European passports are one of the best to. 😅
Really, the smokers hate the smoke rooms because they have to smell all the smoke? It’s like they almost have self awareness about why non-smokers complain about their presence in the first place.
About smoking. It's also illegal in my country to smoke in public. And I understand that smokers don't like to smell their smoke. But neither do I. Why should I suffer from your bad habit while I'm not smoking because passive smoking is more dangerous than active one. There's a popular phrase that says You like to go sledding, you also like to drive a sleigh. So take the conveniences by your actions.

So you have to get a medical liscense to be a tattoo artist in korea? I mean i’m not upset about it though. Because you can get all kinds of infections or medical problems if you get a tattoo and it becomes infected or messed up.
The only thing that I smoke are cigars, but the question that comes to mind is how the Korean government would treat a situation wherein someone who doesn't smoke has THC's in there system, simply because they were in a room where other people were smoking dope. THC's can remain in your system for a very long time. In some cases, for up to 6 months. The government can't possibly expect their citizens to isolate themselves for 6 months, before returning to Korea.
I cant believe that smoking is illegal in public places in Korea. I have never seen so many young smoking people on the streets like in Seoul. Young girls smoking like no bother, All night time area streets literally covered in cigarette butts. I have not seen anything like that in any other country. I think it has to do with price of cigarettes, which is only 4 USD or 4500 KRW, same as price of one can of beer in 7/11. For example in Ireland where I come from cigarretes costs 17 usd. and beer in bar just 6-7 usd.
The tattoo doc cert is a weird one. Can understand as it is using needles and they need to be safe and know how it affects the body and if there are any complications, but shouldn't artistic ability be a high priority for a tattoo artist rather than surgical or medical expertise?

Smoking in public is illegal in Korea??? But I see that shit EVERYWHERE I go here! Literally can't walk without seeing a smoker every street corner or in the middle of a block.
That's a big surprise to me as well, I haven't seen this many smokers on the streets in years🤔
There are a lot of laws in Korea that exist just for the sake of existing...but they aren't really enforced...still. if u piss of a police officer while holding a cigarette they will probably not let it slide...but otherwise idk 😅😂
@@wyra4228 It's the same everywhere. If they want to punish you, they will find a way.
Holy shit how is this the first time I learned about this?????
I think it’s odd they stigmatize doing drugs period in korea, but will encourage each other to drink their body weight in alcohol. Alcohol is literally a drug as well, just in liquid form.
@@anonnnymousthegreat ikr
Wow I didn't know it grew there natively.
Tattoos are trashy.

No.
I have never seen a tattoo that any rational person would frame and put on their wall as a piece of art.
It’s just bad graffiti.
Calling someone who injects ink into someone’s skin an artist is hilariously delusional.
It’s illegal to tattoo someone in Korea.
They’re criminals.
I just love to hear more from you Kelsey . Keeping it real....
I grabbed the phone to back up a bit because I missed a point from irl distraction - and then noticed you had subtitles??? the govt should not play any role in a marriage... thats way too 'big brother' type oversight...if one person cheats, that between them...
Tattoos and piercings can easily spread bloodborne diseases like hepatitis so I think that's why it's so highly regulated.
Thanks Kelsey. I want to come to Korea and was wondering about what I can and cannot do. Very helpful. Your great💕😊
A lot of women on porn sites are trafficked women and/or controlled by men, what about their rights?
The part about drugs use including weed while overseas, p0rn and smoking in public is very much true from where I am - Singapore.
The airport police do random checks on flights inbound from Amsterdam - pee test, that is how they find out if you have weed in your system.
There are always ways to get access to xxx materials online nowadays.

My google account actually asked me to verify my ID whenever doing researches that could be for >19. I noticed this the first time when I was looking up Zico Eureka's mv.
The annoying part was that I couldn't verify myself since the mobile number I was using was for a non resident, so it kept giving me an error.

@@teleriferchnyfain I am aware. They give the bed to alcoholics in withdrawal before a OD. I could show you pictures of my partner in a comma from it… but that isn’t great. More people are allergic than one thinks. But it has been noted that Nordic people don’t do well with the plant effects over long term.

What? You study law and the fact that the laws of the country of your citizenship apply to you abroad shock you?
@@viharsarok well, if you did a bit more research on what territorial law means you would understand that normally, unless exception, the laws of your country do not apply when you are in another country. You’re welcome
Please do this the other way around with things you were surprised were illegal in other countries, but legal in Korea!
Your english is VERY good! I want to visit SK again one day
The assessment I've made on why Korea and other nations in Northeast Asia have similar laws are largely due to influence from western organized religion influences in the 19th and 20th century. South Korea I find has been subject to a significant amount of influence from religious organizations affiliated or similar to the motive of the John Birch Society. Please let me know what you think.
3:32 Just to answer your question - weed is detectable in a blood sample or urin sample for up to 7 days, so if you returned to SK and were randomly asked to submit to testing upon arrival, you could get caught that way 🤷♀
It shows up much longer in hair

Great video! Weed is still illegal in the US at the federal level. If you are caught with drugs at the border, you may be subject to fines and other penalties. Likewise it is illegal to transport weed interstate (that places it in the federal jurisdiction.) There are drug dogs at US ports as well. I read about some wealthy Korean being investigated by the SK government for gambling in Macau not too long ago. Thanks for doing this one.
Porn being illegal is good. Lots of people are negatively affected by this, def spiritually, and don't even know it.
When my husband was younger it was common for people to smoke in grocery stores, there were ash trays at the end of the isle.

Ok the 1st and 3rd ones are wild to me. The fact that you can still get in trouble for doing something outside your country just blows my mind. And I’m curious about the last one. Really, the smokers hate the smoke rooms because they have to smell all the smoke? It’s like they almost have self awareness about why non-smokers complain about their presence in the first place.
Right?!
About smoking. It's also illegal in my country to smoke in public. And I understand that smokers don't like to smell their smoke. But neither do I. Why should I suffer from your bad habit while I'm not smoking because passive smoking is more dangerous than active one.

I honestly think that gaming should be shut off earlier, 12am seems to late for young kids
Regarding the Online Gaming Law, why are kids under 16 out at midnight at PC rooms anyway?! No homework? No sleep? No parents? No curfew?
