New subscriber to your channel, catching up with new technology ( french leader wasn’t about when I was last grayling fishing)...... and some of your earlier vlogs; interesting hypothesis- as a keen fly tyer - thank God for that, I’ve not been wasting my time.......
Andy, interesting segment. Thanks. Hey, why not tie any two flies you want to compare, on within a few inches of each other so the fish must see both at once? I do it. Sometimes a fish takes both together. I've found if I tie two flies 6" or more apart I almost always catch on the bottom/point fly, but not so if the flies are 2"-3" apart. Do I more often find one of the two flies in the fish's eye? Surprising to me, no. Re bead-on-a-hook, when I used beads I came to the conclusion that a bead on an otherwise bare hook was probably usually as effective as with any dressing on the hook. Perdigones are pretty much ths, no? Now I spend so much time on tail waters where fish are very accustomed to size 20 and smaller flies, I use separate weight, so no more bead experiments.
Good experiment, I've caught reservoir trout on bare (black) hooks, and river fish trout/dace/bleak/perch on minimal black hooks size 16/18. I've found black or gold beads best on my rivers. I also tend to follow the old saying "dark day dark fly, bright day bright fly". Possible factors affecting your day could have been 1. the theory that wading anglers dislodge food items which go downstream and switch fish on -so returning downstream, you may have found fish on the lookout for drifting nymphs ??? ; Another guess might be those trout moved in and bullied the Grayling to the nymphs??-who knows? thats fishing. Glad to hear you are both on the mend, tight lines for the NY.
Great video Andy, great communication skills with your viewers, like a one to one instruction almost!! Could you tell me what your line/rig set up is on this particular video? Keep up the good work👌👌🐟🐟
thanks William, very kind! From memory this was a Scierra Brook 10' 2# with a hends Flurocamo 9m french leader. You'll find all the kit info for our videos in the description box
Nice you been back on your feets again, you both video' s have enough backbone. The best whises too the both of 2019 and good fishing so we can enjoy you both on the tube 🕯🕯🕯again 👀 Nice experiment I did it with rainbow beads it was catching only the small Roaches and even it is stockfish, nice sport Rainbows on your new #2 rod.
Interesting film thanks. I've heard that Grayling hang around Salmon rhedds because they love munching on salmon eggs as they spawn. We know that trout are also often caught on egg flies. Seems to be the explanation that they would take a bead to me.
What are the scierra brook rods like are they any good thinking of getting a 7ft6 3wt for the rea brook in shrewsbury im using a greys 7ft6 3wt gr50 just want a second rod
I think they're cracking rods for the money. They'll feel different to your greys, a bit more through actioned as they're specifically designed for fishing small waters
Hi Chris! To be honest I use a few different ones, but the ones I use the most are the 9 metre Hends FluoroCamo from funky fly tying - www.funkyflytying.co.uk/shop/products/leaders/213/hends-camou-french-leader/1655/
another great video, it was hard going for you, do you think the fish you connected to that you never seen might have been that brown you hooked later ? I know you were purely targeting The Lady of the Stream, but I would have still been happy with the Rainbow and the Brown, Was that a Cameo from leva on the far bank of the river at one point :-) and sorry to hear you both had been in the wars, and that you both fully recover quick, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger, all the best for 2019 and look forward to more videos
Very kind Richard, all the best to you too of course! It could possibly have been one of the trout yes, though I guess I'll never know! I was on my own on the day, unless IB secretly stalked me - she's shifty like that!
Ieva and Andy Fishing South Central Alaska is locked up in ice and will be for a while. Things get going in earnest in June. Until then, it’s UA-cam videos like yours and dreaming of summer. I am looking forward to Euro Nymph fishing for the first time. I think it will be extremely effective on some of my favorite water.
@@IBandAndyFishing Yeah its something i have experimented with on stillwaters but not on the rivers as much... nice that someone else did the leg work for me to save me wasting a day so to speak...
Hi Andy, thanks for a great video. I am wondering where did you find the Brook rod that is #2 weight and 10" length? You cannot purchase that weight/length configuration even on Scierra's website, as well as on Amazon following the link you have given :). As I understand you are partnering with Scierra. Maybe this rod is from their new secret product lineup for 2019? :) Thanks.
Hi Martinas! Thanks for the view! The 10' 2# Brook only came in to shops a few weeks ago, but there are places in the UK who have them in stock, according to Google anyway! 👍👍
I I know where you're coming from, but they don't have the profile of the Perdi, specifically no tail or thorax of any kind. These are just bead plus the minimum amount of thread to keep the bead on the hook 👍
Guys, check out the Euro Nymphing In A Box kit here! --> bit.ly/EuroNymphKit
I realize I'm kind of off topic but does anyone know of a good website to stream new series online?
Interesting Andy. Good to hear your guys are on the mend. I guess it shows there are so many variables.... that’s why we love it! HNY to you and Ieva
Hi Alex! Sounds like you had a great day on the Wye?
HNY to you and yours, hopefully catch you on the river soon!
I enjoyed that. Sorry to hear you both have not been well, good to see you back. That last rainbow was kicking well! Best wishes for 2019!
Really enjoy your honest fishing videos, have fun
Thank you Gerry, kind words to us mean more than you know ❤

I was surprised by the results Graeme, I was expecting to catch on the beads!

Excellent video and all the best to you both for 2019
Very kind, thank you! Have a great new year! 👍👍👍
I have been given a day ticket to fish for grayling on the lower itchen. Any advise you can give me as a fairly inexperienced fly fisherman

Interesting idea keep it up
We're gonna film this one again at some point for sure 👍👍
Interesting video! I have caught grayling before on tungsten beads with thread bodies in pink and black. 14:27 was that a rise?
Thanks Aaron, glad you enjoyed the vid! Funny isn't it? I must admit I thought the beads would work, I might try again another time

Hi where do you do your guiding ?
I'm based in Derbyshire Alan, I guide on the rivers Dove, Wye and Derwent
Hi looking for a days guided Grayling fly fishing and some pointers Regards Alan

There's another vlog idea!
Why would you think wading into a pool would prevent you from catching Grayling?
These "bead flies" are very much like perdigones which are basically clear-coated beads and hooks. And have always worked fantastically :)
I I know where you're coming from, but they don't have the profile of the Perdi, specifically no tail or thorax of any kind. These are just bead plus the minimum amount of thread to keep the bead on the hook 👍

Thanks David, sorry we've been away, plenty of good stuff coming though!
Similar to an egg fly
i've caught trout on bare hooks .....kinda midge like
amazing what they'll take isn't it? Makes you wonder if we're over thinking it!
