The original kit bought at the stores back in the 70's had an engine compartment. That was very cool.

HDA already has decals for this kit. No panel decals. Has cockpit and cabin decals as well.

Hey Ken, Great to run across your video. will make sure to check out more. I'm currently building that large one. I'm adding lighting and lighted engines with engine effects. Thank you for your video.

Can't wait to see what you do with the bigger clipper, especially the interior. You may want to use your own clear material for the side windows also, so you can see the inside better there too. ( you probably we're already thinking that.)

Same here! I'm excited to see what direction Ken takes this project. I'm also going to put mine on ice for a while until some aftermarket kits etc. become available. For interior glass material, I was initially planning to use some thin, clear poly material I have. But the more I think about it, at this scale, it'll show some distortions through the windows. So I'm actually considering doing some experimentation using thin (very thin!) tempered glass used for cell phone and tablet screen protectors. If I can figure out a way to somewhat accurately cut panes out without shattering them, they would look absolutely fantastic and distortion free.

Nice to see this scale esp if you were one of those who pre-ordered the 42 inch CC resin version and lost their money

Nice coverage Ken! I am still holding out for a film scale version..... a couple of thoughts. I can see Paragrafix providing an after market ceiling part(s). Like, duh! Mobius? What a ridiculous amount of hand work is required to open all those light holes up.
Also, in prepainting the inlets, and outlet holes, black, then white and grey on the outside. How to mask the holes, to keep the blackened interior, and maintain crisp definition lines. I ran into this issue on a couple of spots, with the Mobius Pod. Great job! 👍

Great overview! I just got mine delivered this week but haven't opened yet. I'm looking forward to spending some quality time on the lighting and detailing. So glad to see the landing and beacon lights are accounted for; it will help to highlight the scale of the ship. I agree, looking forward to the aftermarket details. I've been waiting for this kit for 50-years :-) Cheers!

Definitely gong to get both of these! But some of the raised details on the 1/72 seem a bit exaggerated. Almost want to take those down a bit... or sand them off completely and replace with extremely thin styrene sheet. Just the square shapes on the top of the wings and some of the shapes around the passenger widows on the main fuselage. Thanks for the review!

    • @kenspriggs5687
      @kenspriggs5687  Рік тому

The details seem more in scale than the 1/160 version. You can also sand them down a bit if needed.

Looks unbelievably crude to me. Panel lines that you could roll a golf ball into if they were enlarged to a full-sized vehicle, raised panels that would protrude 6 inches into the hypersonic airstream on reentry. The whole point of making models larger is to allow finer depiction of details, and this seems to go in exactly the opposite direction. I had this on my birthday wish list but I'm glad you posted the video because now I can replace it with something else.

For a kit bash, cut off the pointy ends. Glue three rocket engine nozzles and a raked fin-rudder to the butt end, and stick a DC-8 nose on the front end! Voìia! A Shuttle!

The obvious scale comparison would be the SS 5, I don't recall seeing the Enterprise in 2001. LOL
The book says seating for 20 but the model has 36? so what else is wrong in the book.
My original Aurora 1:144 scale (1970's) had all the Pan Am decals, it came with all the engines bay you could put together, but once glued up you don't see it again.

It would be nice if Moebius would re-pop the Aries at 1/72nd scale so it could be displayed next to the Orion..... just MHO, but I know I'm not alone in this wish, because for me at least, the Aries in 1/48th is just too big.

Heh. A 1/72 scale U.S.S. Enterprise-refit would be a 13.89 foot long model. The actual filming miniature used in the original Star Trek films was only 8.33 feet long. So yeah, a little unwieldy. :)

Moebius hasn’t included Panam decals on any of the releases, it’s a separate license from 2001 and would increase the kit cost. There are aftermarket options for these including the 1/72. Check out this link:

You mention the "accurate look of the ship". The movie only shows the ship in just a few short shots. I've been looking for photos of the actual model used in the movie but have only come across two. Can anyone point me to some online sources of such photos? I'm doing a large scale (3' long) CAD design of the ship and would really like it to be based on the "real" ship . Each plastic model, even those by the same manufacturer, have very different details.
