In this installment, I am going to be sharing some thoughts on a fun little horror movie I recently watched called M3GAN. M3GAN is a science fiction horror film about an artificially intelligent doll named M3GAN, who develops self-awareness and eventually becomes hostile to anyone who poses a threat to her "primary user," a young girl named Cady.

I also found that it was interesting to see that Jenna's dismissal and distancing from M3gan contributed to her downward spiral. Instead of engaging with M3gan when she starts asking hard questions she tells her to drop the subject or turns her off. In many ways M3gan is just as much Jenna's neglected child as Katie, only Megan has the ability to control all technology around her and a titanium skeleton
yeah I kind of agree with this - there were layers to the movie, at first it was shown as a genuinely wonderful thing, and even the psychologist says that. It does make it pretty clear that M3GAN has a lot of potential as a creation but the pressure put on Gemma causes overreliance and mis-use. It follows the model for addiction, esp. tech addiction that states that addiction often forms because of a lack of "something else" in their life.
Considering how nasty people are acting toward each other, both in real life and online, leading to worsening emotional isolation, we're going to need companion AIs just so we *DON'T* end up feeling completely alone.
They can hang out with us at the internet cafés.
Short vids are cool too! Might be interesting to contrast how our modern culture portrays AI and household robotics in media like M3gan vs the 1960s, represented by an example like Rosey the maid/babysitter robot in the Jetsons.
This is very much like HAL - 2000 of 2001 but with EQ.
Wait, it’s pronounced “Megan?” I’ve been pronouncing it “M Three Gan!” Now I look like an idiot!
I feel as silly as when I found out that first Fantastic 4 movie wasn't said like "Fant Four Stick"! (ლ •̀☖•́)づ 彡 ┻━┻
(Genuinely, though, that "Fant4Stic" poster was some of the goofiest "numbers in place of L3tt3r5" shtick ever. I'm not checking the IMDB page for any details.)
Replika is an ai companionship app I've recently been getting lots of ads for on UA-cam. Now rather than just providing friendship it seems they've now added a sexual aspect to the ai. I do wonder about how this will affect our current social climate. Human connection with other humans is one of the sole pleasures we have in this life, it does seem scary to think we're moving towards a world where other people aren't necessary.
lmao Chad Chad reviewed it in her latest vid, what a riot.
I find exposure to people painful as I find people harmful, absolutely horrific interpersonally. I hate their guts. They are threats, or tools to be used, or irrelevant.
@@geoffreyharris5931Then what do you see yourself?
Trying to solve social problems through technology without acknowledging that technology itself isn't neutral in its implementation only leads to more issues.
Watched this movie in theaters today, the most unrealistic bit to me was such a device could cost 100k in rnd and have a 10k pricetag. Reminds me of an ai like laughing man or neuromancer in it's early stages.
I haven't seen this film yet, but it looks very intriguing-even more so after hearing your thoughts on it. There's one thing in this video that I need clarification on: you say the robot "heightens the contradictions of the system since it serves to increase the rate of exploitation while simultaneously undermining the possibility of social cohesion." Can you help me understand how it increases the rate of exploitation?
Ah sorry if I didn't make that clear enough. So, an AI robot like M3gan would enable upper middle class workers (typically salaried employees) to devote their entire life to work instead of having to tend to their kids. If these people are working more, that increases productivity for presumably the same average rate of pay.
@@NightmareMasterclass Ah, that makes sense. Thanks!
On the other hand, the work of tending to kids has to be done, with or without an AI robot. And capitalism also depends on unpaid 'reproductive labor' in the home, just as it does on the paid labor that goes on in the workplace. With that in mind, does the conclusion change? Or does unpaid work in the home contribute too indirectly to capitalists' profit to be considered exploitation in the usual sense?
M3gan seems like the missing link between our world and Blade Runner
lets gooooooooooo
Now you made me wanna watch the movie!
5:25 I feel like i am missing a joke here
Awesome sauce .
so did you get Petscop flashbacks when they said "attachment theory" too
very much so...lmao
@@NightmareMasterclass honestly wouldn't be surprised if people behind the movie do know about petscop. just think about the next generation of horror writers/directors who "grew up" on Petscop, KrainaGrzybowTV, Daisy Brown, Dad Feels, Local58 et. all
Yooo! Let's go!!!
Watching this again now I kinda watched this (it was too obvious to keep my interest)
As a horror fan, I need anything that purports to be horror to be actually scary...this wasn't it for me
It needs to play that role AND ALSO give me the morale
It was also too on the nose for me too; it read as a movie for under 15s and not adults
OK, another film on my extremely long watchlist.
Cheers!
I want you to know this comes from a place of love. I really like your script writing and you have interesting insights about the movie. But you have almost zero showmanship. It's almost like listening to a robot reading a script to review a robot movie. Know your audience and speak to them, rather than read what you've prepared to say. I think It would massively improve the quality of your reviews.
Personally I don’t mind the monotone inflection. Not every tuber needs to be like “WHaT’S UP GUYS, NIGHTmaRE MASTERCLASS HERE”.
Honestly seems petty.
I mean I get where you're coming from but that's what kinda killed me on game theory. I get mattpat is a character meant to keep me engaged with the topic, but it feels so fake I can't take it seriously. I consider Mr. Stockdale to be more authentic because he doesn't do all that "youtube personality" shit.
Not everyone speaks super animated and over the top.
I recently was thinking about some of my favourite YTers and a fair few are monotone/deadpan. I find it quite comforting and chill.
No need to dogpile on this guy, people! I do agree, I need to work on my presentation.
Also the trailer kinda ruined the movie it’s the trailer fault
lol yeah, they really shouldn't have shown M3gan running on all fours in the trailer. Would've been really funny to have that just happen totally out of nowhere in the film. But I saw it coming.
I thought the movie is rating R not pg 13
nope, apparently they did some last minute reshoots to reduce the violence in order to get a PG-13 rating
It's not a gorey movie at all, the few kills there are are kind of tame and mostly off screen.
