I had trouble locating the 'hidden' drain plug until I watched this video. Thanks!
kudos to Subaru making the oil filter so accessible, really making this an easy DIY for anyone.
Really cool. Didn’t have time to watch the whole video but awesome to see crosstreks are beer powered. Sort of like me.
crush ring/washers available in a 10 pack for like $12 at Was-Mart. Love the Subie filter on top = easiest oil change ever!
Great vid. Clear and easy, no mumbo-jumbo. And you’re speaking my language with the beer!
Thank you. I'm glad it helped.
Because i can’t fill up the oil filter before i install it i filled up the center of the oil filter chamber with nice clean oil to make start up with oil quick.... oil pressure builds quickly on initial start... what do you think???
Great job , Thank you !!!
Hi Man do you know what coolant do I need to buy for my subaru crosstrek 2016
thanks for your help great vieo
i like how you included a 6 pack of beer 😅😅😅
I cannot find the hole to unscrew the oil cap under the car. I swear the under carriage of my Subaru cross trek looks slightly different than yours! What am I missing. I don’t have ramps so visibility is challenging. Any advise?
Awesome video, man! Thank you for posting. I just bought a 2016 Crosstrek and am wanting to learn how to do these types of jobs myself and will implement your teachings at my first oil change...though I think for the first time, I will skip the beer and will crack one open AFTER and not DURING! Also, what kind of ramps are those and where can I get those? Thanks again for posting! Super helpful!
I believe they are the Hopkins Rhino Ramps. You can find those at a local auto parts store for about $30-40. Also good point. Be safe and celebrate after!
Does anyone else pour a little bit of new oil, down the dipstick tube, and oil filter housing? I've always done that. Keep the drain plug out, that little bit of new oil will grab the old, residual oil that's still left in the bottom of the pan etc. 🤷♂️. Guess I have OCD. Lol. Good vid.
Thank you sir!
Do you know what the other bolts are for because I unscrewed a different bolt thinking it was the drain pan... the one that has like 6 screws around it then one drain plug in the middle
Do they hold up the plastic undercarriage? If it is just a single bolt and no fluid came out, it should be ok as long as you torqued it back on.
Good video- thanks.
A/ Curious as to not using the oem Subaru oil?
B/ Preference for Mobil 1 synthetic over others?
C/ Noticed you did not fill up the new filter with oil before screwing it down on the motor. Necessary?
You can use the Subaru OEM oil. Actually can use whatever oil you like as long as it is 0W-20. Personally I like the Mobile 1 full synthetic , but you can get another brand if that is more affordable. Same thing with the K&N filter. You can get a different brand, just make sure that it fits by looking it up online first. And no, you don't need to fill the filter up with oil. The car will do that on its own. Just remember to put clean oil on the rubber gasket before putting it on.
Good luck!
thank you!!!
nice video, i just uploaded a video about how i wanted to film the mechanic at subaru change the oil to learn. They wouldn't let me. This video is just as good, thanks
It's really not as hard as people think it is, and this is generally the same on most vehicles. Some cars may have a splash shield that may need to be removed to gain access, but it is nothing too difficult to remove. Thanks for taking a look!
that ramp would be so convenient! whered you buy it from?
I can't remember which auto store it was, but you can find it at either Autozone, O'Riley's, or Advance Auto part stores. You can even check on amazon and find one there. Be sure to check that the weight limit of the ramp exceeds the weight of the car.
You don't need the ramp. And it was a 14 mm, not a 17mm.
btadeus, thanks for posting the video. . .Just curious, are you using a K&N air filter also? I use in my bike and another vehicle, however this is my first Subie so I'm trying to get ideas of what people are using in their Subaru's.
Yes, I am using a K&N filter, but you should be fine with any that fits.
Use a 6 point wrench or socket on the drain bolt a 12 point will chew the plug head up.
Great video. Would you happen to know if everything is the same for the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek (Premium)? Thanks
Helped me do it for my crosstrek 2017 premium
@@juanvargas8546 thanks!
Subaru definitely makes this easy to do yourself. I always lower the car before checking the final level so it's not on an angle and more accurate.
Good habit.
I do fleet maintenance on the trucks at work and if im in a hurry and check it later in the yard, sometimes it can be a half a quart off.
IPA's are the best!
Indeed they are!
Hi. I have a question about the density of the oil for the Subaru XV with FB20 engine. The climate in your state is cold or warm? The manufacturer's recommendation Subaru regarding oil density (0W-20), is for all countries or only cold?
We get both cold and warm weather out here and the 0W-20 works fine. Supposedly it has better fuel economy during winter, but I have never calculated that out to prove any significant difference. You could also use 5W-20, but I would go with whatever fits your budget or your own personal preference.
I run 5w 40 in Florida in my FB20 Subaru
Ok as soon as you mentioned the beer, I subscribed....thanks bud for the great vid.
Great video, I was thinking about doing this myself but it looks like the Cost of oil, oil filter, ... ect is around the same price of just having someone else do it for you. Am I missing something?
Nevermind; I was comparing the price of a regular oil change done by a mechanic and not the synthetic oil needed.
+Matt You can get higher quality components for the same price as a cheap oil change from some company. If you are on the real cheap, auto stores occasionally have mega discounts on entire oil change kits (pan, oil, filter, and paper towels). I also enjoy the fact that I know I getting the job done right instead of trusting some kid to do it on my new car.
How do you loosen the drain plug, it looked like it was kind of buried in there. Do you remove that plastic shield?
No need to remove the plastic shield. Your wrench should be able to reach in there. Good luck!

I followed these directions and my 2016?Subaru crosstrek makes a funny whining noise when it’s idling and they car shakes when it switches from 1st to 2nd gear, has anyone had this problem?
Update - looks like a actually emptied my transmission fluid.... not my oil. The oil plug is more hidden than the transmission
Does the beer go in before or after the oil refill? Oil to beer? Beer to oil?
Depends if you are looking for best results or least complaints from the mechanic.
Are those low profile ramps?
+Scott Shelton No they are not. Low profile 8s not required for the crosstrek.
I bought a 12 pack of IPA in case my oil drains slow. You can't be too careful.
Do you put just 5 qt or did you put 5.1 qt in?
I just put in the 5qt and left it at that.
What ramps are those? Have they held up ?
Rino ramps.
Could have mentioned the oil capacity... I watched this video mostly hoping to get the oil capacity. But generally good job i still gave ya a thumbs up
He did, right at the beginning. 5.1 qts
The wrench size is a 14mm for the drain plug.
The one on my wife's crosstrek is a 17mm too. Maybe yours was replaced at some point?
@@RCGshakenbake it’s really weird…some Subaru’s have the 14 mm, and others have the 17 mm. 🤔
may i ask what ramps those are?
I believe the are the Hopkins Rhino Ramps. You can find them at an auto parts store for about $30-40.
They look like (my) Rhino Ramps. You can buy them at Princess Auto, Canadian Tire (guess where I live, eh?)
Nice video. I've changed mine several times so far but the IPAs drew my attention to watch the video!
