  • Welcome to Norse Myths, Legends, and Folktales, where MyLinda Butterworth of Totally Stories interprets the written word for your listening pleasure. Today we we learn about the demise of the Volsungs and the birth of Sigurd in part one of “Sigurd the Dragon Slayer.”
When Helgi won his kingdom and his bride, Sinfjotle returned again unto Hunaland. Thereafter he set to warring in distant realms, and he achieved widespread renown and won much treasure. Now it chanced that his eyes fell with love upon a maid of exceeding great beauty, and he sought to have her for himself. But she was also desired by the brother of Borghild. So the two fought, and Sinfjotle slew his rival and plundered his land. When he returned with the good news Borghild was angry and wanted him gone. So he made an offer of blood treasure to Borghild, but she only pretended to be appeased, knowing well she could not go against the king's will, but in her heart, she resolved to be avenged upon Sinfjotle for the death of her brother. At the funeral feast, she offered a horn of mead to Sinfjotle, he refused not once but twice, and Sigmund took it and drained it. The third time it was offered to Sinfjotle, he decided he must drain it, and when he did, he died because it had been poisoned.
Sigmund was greatly grieved and carried Sinfjotle to the river to cross and was met by Odin, who put him in his boat and took him to Valhalla. He banished Borghild for her crime, began looking for a new wife, and sought the hand of Hjordis, but King Lynge also wanted to marry her. So King Eylime offered the maid the chance to choose, and she chose the Volsung. This angered King Lynge, who planned to war over it. Sigmund did not want to go to war because Lynge had more warriors, but he knew he had to, so he sent his pregnant wife and her bondmaid into hiding. Who would win this war? What of Hjordis and her unborn son? Listen in to hear the whole story.

I meant to leave this on Episode 61 but I forgot. I really enjoyed your character acting last time. You really got into Halgi's wife, especially your singing of her song of love and grief. Great job, Mylinda!
