This is a tactic the police have adopted for "Auditors" being accused of having a knife on three occasions that I know of in the last twelve months, you are correct that it is an assault and an illegal search but it looks like they have finally learned that misusing sec 43 costs them money. However it is still illegal as they have no power to lay hands on a member of the public not under arrest and carried on the search even after they saw it was a tripod, put a claim in.

Put that in your complaint , it went from a possible knife then to an object when the Sargent was explaining and NO contact cards on any of the officers involved, I would have followed them and recorded them just to see who else they did stop searches on.

Once they realised it was not a knife they should have walked awsy and said sorry..the reasonable suspicion went when they knew it was a tripod.
The police should have confined the search to that pocket alone, if they suspected the offensive weapon was in that pocket a full body search should not be warranted.

If their reasonable suspicion is based on an object being a knife, as soon as they discovered it wasn't they should have ceased their search. Why are they searching your waste band?

You have to ask the question, what if you were running to catch up with someone, they would very probably have shot you and said that you were suspicious?
Any half-decent copper would've stopped when he realised he'd made a mistake regarding the suspect item. If he'd apologised and stopped the search, fair enough. Instead he proceeded to rifle through your pockets for the sake of it. You showed them a far higher level of respect and understanding than their actions deserved.
