Our first and only full day in Tulum Mexico didn't go as planned! We had to negotiate to get a taxi! they wanted $30 to $40 USD to drive us 12 minutes to the beach, we then over paid for everything in Tulum. Then to top it off we got scammed at the end of the night by a taxi driver! We will never go back to Tulum!!!

Yeah, we thought the same thing about that area. Not inexpensive at all! We also got a little Montezuma's revenge there too. I've never had that issue anywhere else. Sorry for your experience there, but thanks for the awesome videos!
It's crazy how expensive it is and how fake it feels with everyone trying to play the part. Very pretencious! If you're going to ever get montezumas revenge then you need to do like Jayden and actually get it in montezuma haha. We're still waiting to get our money back from Wise.

Sorry to hear about what happened to you guys! Hubby and I went to Tulum for 10 days. We stayed in an airbnb. We totally weren't impressed with the high cost of every single thing in Tulum. Having to spend a small fortune on a light snack just so we could use any beach was a turn-off. We felt like we were getting taken advantage of just because we were tourists. A produce stand vendor tried to sell us one avocado for $5 USD. We also got scammed by a taxi driver. I'm sure our experience in Samara next month will be quite refreshing in comparison 😊
There's ways to get past. I liked buying cans of tuna salad and my own water. Great for the beach, but no bathrooms if you go on your own. There's an access point to the beach, midway through the hotel zone.

Hi Chris & family , sorry to hear of the taxi scam .Hope u get it sorted out. We always pay evrerything with cash ( pesos) when in Playa DC . We have heard Tulum is very expensive and the problem of getting to the beach from town. We have friends that own a condo in Tulum and they have had enough and are selling and moving back to BC.
We were in Tulum in Feb 2023, beach was the same with the seaweed, and the big waves. Lots of kite surfers, not many swimmers. Playa DC had much smaller waves and was swimmable, the seaweed was less too, but only because they cleaned it all day.
Ya we were not impressed with the beach in Tulum or PDC, Isla Mujeres was much better! Costa Rica is much nicer and doesn't stink.

So sorry that happened. Fingers crossed it was a mistake that gets fixed soon. I live in Texas and have been to Mexico many times, twice in the past 2 years (to the same Gold coast area) . I agree that the prices are high. What makes it affordable is staying at an all inclusive or paying for a beach pass. At least when you pay you know exactly what you're getting. I am fearful of transportation issues for the exact scam type issue you encountered.
On another note...I hope your family does visit the cenotes! There are countless cenotes there, all very different. But unique to that part of the world and I've never experienced any thing like it anywhere else. I like them so much that I've swam them, snorkeled them and scuba dove them!
Unfortunately the guy planned it, he purposely put in 7450 instead of 450 pesos. Everyone keeps arguing with us saying that Mexico is a lot cheaper then Costa Rica which it's not its on par or in some cases more expensive as a tourist. All inclusive are around the same price anywhere. We've done research on this. All inclusive are actually expensive once you factor in the cost of the room with a comparable Airbnb.
Because it's Tulum, a tourist trap. I go to Puerto Vallarta and everything is super cheap: uber, taxi, food and lodging, however there are scammers all over. I am sure you know by now a well-known lawyer company has closed its doors in Costa Rica and a lot of people lost money.
Yes we know this now, didn't expect it to be that outrageous tho, we knew it was pricier. We don't mind spending good money if the value is there.

That sucks that you guys got scammed, but you can reported them. If you have any information of the taxi guy, you go to the taxi base and explain what happened to you. They will guide you from there. It didn’t happen to us, but we were mad 😡 when we went ,they were over charging us like u say 20 minutes to the beach. So we rented a car , way cheaper. Hope your trip gets better.
We are home in Costa Rica now, we didn't have any info of the taxi, our original shuttle driver Franco offered to put in a report if we had any info on the car number etc. we've been dealing with Wise about it which is part of the Visa system. They just take longer to refund your money.
As an update on tulum, I ve been in tulum for three weeks.very expensive food at the supermarket is no different than the states. Taxi will try to take advantage of you. But I learned to not ask how much, but tell them how much you are willing to pay. It works .tulum is all under construction and makes it a pain to go to the beach. Luckily no seaweed.the scams are everywhere. What I do like is how primitive and undeveloped it is. But thats going to change bye bye tulum
Yeah, you have to ask before you get in the cab, but it’s almost impossible to negotiate if you don’t look Mexican hahaha, I was just there last week, and they tried to scam me every time for 3 weeks, just because they know you are a tourist, even tho I’m Mexican and speak Spanish, they still know you are in vacations, so they try their best to take your money, some times we had to walk for 30 minutes instead of paying large amount of money for a 5 minutes ride, it’s ridiculous

Mexico is getting very expensive in tourist areas. I’m sure the beach places in CR are the same. I would never stay in tulum bc the hotel tourist area is so far from the real town. We stay in PDC near the mega +but on a quiet st, only 10 min walk to beach and so many cheap eats compared to fifth ave. I dont use taxis if i can walk…the taxi mafia are ridiculous, we only went to one cenote bc it was so expensive for 5 of us to get there/bk.

No uber is only in Cancun and we weren't sure if the collectivist ran where we were staying, we didn't see any.

I just got back from Tulum mid May, 2024. I had a horrible time in Tulum and specifically, the TAXI DRIVERS. AVOID THEM AT ANY COST. They are corrupt, dangerous, overpriced, and they work with the drug cartel. The taxi cost in this video is not accurate. They are extremely overpriced. There is a reason why they wont let UBER operate in Tulum.
The price in this video is what we paid, after negotiating. The Taxi prices there are insane and yes if you can avoid taxis then do so.
