The door opening is symbolizing mens problems venting into the public. Men are always deemed to be the tough ones who internalize problems. The door opening is the one place they can talk about actual personal problems being aired to the world.
Clay is just a wonderful view of someone forced into a situation in life and refusing to say he needs to back away. To say and admit he needs to stop. The bitterness of your life slowly overtakes you overtime and soon its all you know, how to do, how to give and so on. Just bitter.

Not only is it Clay viewing the town as soft: The reason he got so upset that Rev. Puddy, Officer Papermouth and Dr. Potterswheel didn't hit him is because it reminded him of how his father had told him that he wasn't even worth hitting. In Clay's warped mind, being dealt physical punishment means that he's cared about.

Logically, yes, he wouldn't care one bit if these people didn't actually admited it, but since we recognize and adapt via patterns, seeing it again can bring back memories. Just how saying a word might affect or harm someone. You even said it yourself on your previous video CeeJay!

Yes! This is my favorite episode of the show! Clay’s breakdown and explanation of who he is and why he does what he does is incredible. He knows that he’s hurting his family, but he refuses to do any better. The entire speech about Hording and Jackals is incredible.

Yeah good analysis! It seems to me from what I’ve seen that even before marriage that Clay had some insecurities and that Bloberta made him feel good about himself rather than him necessarily loving who she truly was. That may be why that “poison” compounded with the bad job and the drinking built up inside of him. I could be wrong though that’s just my interpretation. I just think that the death of his mom at such a young age was something he didn’t learn to properly deal with.

Honestly I don't think Reverend Putty was that bad in last episode. Like sure he was an asshole, but Florence was also to blame. She pretty much harassed him and pressured him into sleeping with her, and while Putty never said "no", he never really said "yes" either, and even though Florence didn't do those things in a malicious way but rather because she was and hopeless, I don't think it really excuses her actions.

Exactly. Florence was sexually fantasizing a guy she barely knows and took advantage of his meekness to bring him to bed.

  • @devilred18

Reverend Putty was apparently meant to have some massive development because of him being a father, learning to see more inner beauty, and even try to get along with Florence by seeing her on a semi regular basis. Apparently eventually Florence was going to lose weight and Putty would have been happy with just being with her.
Is he a good person? I mean.... compared to other men of moralton, he's a saint. But that's not fair since most of them don't have someone as great as Stephanie as a daughter keeping you grounded and helping you grow.
It's also worth noting officer Paper mouth was meant to start dating Bluberta so she had someone who not only listened to her but someone who she could take care of emotionally and would actually show her affection. It was also a way to let moral see a person of authority not be corrupt.

One thing that's easy to overlook is that Clay is wanting *some* form of affection, and his taunting of the trio was his attempt to do that - all stemming back to the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father.
And two fun facts - the creator of the show, Dino Stamatopoulos, went through a nasty divorce, and some of that seeped into the writing for Clay's rant, and Shapey's line at the end of the episode was something that Dino's daughter Tigger (who also voiced Shapey) had said when she was very young, and it stuck in his mind long enough to get incorporated into the show.

Clay is just truly self hatred incarnate, he can’t imagine himself ever happy nor does he want to ever be happy. Clay briefly acknowledges that what he has done is wrong and that he’s a problem that infects others. I like to think Orel is truly the only person in his family that he actually loves, but because of his many insecurities and boiling hatred he doesn’t think he deserves Orel’s love because he still thinks he’s not Worth it.

    • @TC-th1ey
      @TC-th1ey Рік тому +5

I don't think Clay really cares for anyone apart from what they can give him, only seeming to do things for Orel because it's what is expected of him rather than because he wants to. He wants Orel to behave in certain ways as if he causes havoc it reflects poorly upon his father.

    • @ironicweeb4111

@@TC-th1eyyou ain’t wrong I’m mostly basing my head canon that Clay cares enough to beat him (Clay associates physical abuse with affection or validation) and that he knows that Orel loves him unconditionally. I honestly think Clay did what he did was too make Orel hate him so to validate his self hatred.

Rewatching this episode i think i just realized that the three men that enter the bar with Clay are reflections of how his life is.
Putty: A man who continues to chase after lust, no matter where it comes from (Coach Stopframe)
The officer: Someone who’s become unlovable that his current lover hates him (Bloberta)
Doctor Potterswheel: Someone who’s lost someone suddenly, and blames themselves for their death (His mother)
“With all you people as role models” works so well because Clay is the definition of ALL of the traits he condemns.

Puddy was going to actually fall in love with pink haired lady and not care about what she looks like or who she was, and even though she was to lose weight he would have told her that he loved her and then they would get together. I wouldnt say the reverend's irredeemable, I'd say hes the most human character in the show other than Orel. The revrend has his good and his evil, hes somewhere in the moral middle.

I think he was asking for the 'five knuckle sandwich' because that was the only way he learned how to receive affection/attention from others. His mum was unconditional love and forgiveness no matter what he did, once she passed, his father payed attention to him, by hitting, when he miss behaved. In the bar scene, when every one left without hitting him, he felt lonely and unloved.

I feel like part of Clays rage is that he isn’t being punished or hurt for anything and that the worlds not fair. He went on this long rant about how he sucks and isn’t good enough and how all the other men suck and then tried on purpose to get hit by them. Clay isn’t mostly upset that they’re soft, he’s upset that these “jackals” aren’t feasting on him. Because they’re better than him, but still bad people, and if they aren’t going to hit him and give him that validation or that push back, who will? And how bad of a person does that make him? Sure everyone else is bad but none of them physically injured someone, and he can’t even get them to do that. It also parallels him as a kid, he’s asking to get hurt to show he matters, and they all leave with him yelling for them to come back. He’s being abandoned again. He isn’t good enough for people and he’s still not bad enough either, he can’t keep them around and he can’t get hit so he’s in this torturous limbo where nothing ever changes.

Clay speaking about hoarding a woman is in reference to how he himself feels like he's lost control over something he sees as his. Bloberta. He found the handkerchief with the doctor's initials in it which is why he seemed so oddly hostile towards the doctor. Clay is a fascinating character because of how uncomfortably real he is. He wants so desperately to be punched because it shows that he is worth something (because this was the way his father used to do to him.) Without others acknowledgment he has nothing as he feels like nothing on a daily basis. Yes he is gay, but I wonder if this is why he started seeing the coach. What if he didn’t love the coach, but was merely looking for someone to give him Acknowledgment but not as this kind of abuse…

2:16 There was actually supposed to be a deleted episode after the previous one where Reverence Putty reconciles with Florence. She stops attending the church, and despite ending up doing the deed with a lot of women-which is something he would usually be happy about-Putty was apathetic (his apathy was what made him attractive to all the women lmao) about it because he realizes that he misses florence. He does see her again in the diner with another guy but she had slimmed down significantly, much to his disappointment. She refuses to talk to him when he attempted to, so he actually ends up sleeping at her door. He realizes that he liked her the way she originally was and all the s*x he had in her absence was meaningless. He tells her he loves her and they reconcile. I honestly don't know why they had to cut it off because honestly it would've redeemed Reverend putty's character fully.

Yes this is a Clay episode but one of the highlights for me was the fact Shapey talked. Not screamed, not babble, tried to communicate and connect. But he and his new brother, Block, they can't phrase their thoughts and emotions properly. They're scared because Bloberta is tearing the house up and acting panicked. Something they aren't used to the clean freak, numb mother they are used to seeing. They're quiet for the first time, observing and while scared, trying to reach out. A moment to connect and attempt to comfort come's out through toddler speech. It's so sad, because he's 7 years old. Neglect stunted them. But even so, look how kind they're trying to be..
it isn't Shapey's fault he was raised that way. It isn't his fault when their parents place responsibility and safety on Orel's shoulders. We see this annoying little brat and think that's all there is to him, but he's a victim to. And we don't see that till now.
Thanks if you read. I have such a connection to this show and it's one of those moments that makes you reflect. Because it passes by so fast. I wish the show had more time to explore Shapey and Block.

I thought the door opening was more about being able to comfortably live with the problems that were brought up around the men individually. They complain about the light but out there in the light is where all the problems don't have to matter. When they're in the bar, all the problems get swelled up and burst and turn into a toxic little circle but that could be because of Clay's overwhelmingly bitter feelings about life.

You said reverend Putty has no redemption, well, there's an episode scrapped, called "Narcissism" that the script for it is still up, I Read it, and it's an episode where a lot of the woman in Moralton start to fall for Rod, and sleep with him, but even tough now he is having a lot of sex, he can't enjoy it, he feels numb, and like all of it it's for nothing, untill he starts to think about Florence, then he starts to actually get it on, even tough every woman in Moralton wants him, he still only thinks about Florence, so, he goes for Stephanie for advice, that eventually leads to Rod going to Florence and confessing that he loves her, (And she looses weight), The episode implies that even if she haven't lost weight the reverend would still go looking for her

Clay’s rant was really about how he hates his life but he also doesn’t want to abandon it because in his messed up way he does care about his children well Orel mostly since shapely isn’t his and that he would make those sacrifices to not be happy for his children because he wants to give them something he didn’t have a father figure in his life hence why he physically disciplines Orel and took him on the trip he wants to be better than his father out of spite , but he goes on talk about all about how he thought Roberta was the answer to the happiness but when he married her he realized she wasnt the answer and that he wants to cling onto her but he doesn’t value her and prevent others from having her . Clay deep down knows his a piece of garbage but he knows it’s not totally his fault he’s so messed up and he doesn’t want Orel to grow up to be like him letting other people hurt him and turning him bitter like him I.e sensitive

  • @Dapro9000
    @Dapro9000 Рік тому +1

The reason Clay didn’t go to the church might be because everybody else, even Orel, aren’t pretending anymore. He just skipped church altogether because he’s hated it all along, and used this newfound time to drink his problems away. This could also be why Clay decided to go on a huge rant and insult everyone. Nobody’s pretending, everybody’s sad, like him, so he was just himself, an asshole.

Abuse is the only love Clay knows. It’s what his father did to him before his mother died, and what his father withheld from him afterwards, only hurting Clay whenever he’d goad him into it. The words “you’re not worth it” changed Clay’s life, his perspective on pain and abuse, and how he acts.
Clay’s actions are dictated by an arbitrary worthiness that only has proof in its results, being whenever Clay is hit. But since he exists in a patriarchal system that gives him and those like him power, he’s at the top of the totem pole. There’s no abuser for Clay. It’s why he didn’t punish Orel after Orel beat the everliving shit out of him; *he saw that as love.* It’s sort of like a fucked up version of “love languages,” a form of expression. Because of his upbringing and the circumstances that lead to his adulthood, he sees this pain as comfort. It’s why he beats Orel all the time, because he loves him in his fucked up way. It’s why he doesn’t hit Bloberta even though he’s got wife-beater written all over him, they’re in a loveless marriage. Finally, it’s why he was basically begging to be beat up now. He wants “love” from his community, and they despise him to the point where they see him as not even close to worth the reprimand from beating someone in a position of power. In a sense, Clay represents his very own criticisms of Jesus (Note, not the actual Jesus, he was projecting): Faux sacrifice, privilege, power, and cowardice. This plays into his narcissistic worldview nicely, since he’s nigh-divine under this perspective, a perspective only reinforced by what he thinks his job is (awful), as well as what it actually is (a spoiler that I will not tell you.)

8:45, Officer Papermouth didn't know it was Rod because A, it was night time, and judging by the lighting in the scene, if we the viewer couldn't see while INSIDE the room, I doubt he'd be able to see inside either. And B, Florence's apartment from what I remember was on the 2nd or 3rd floor, unless her ex-husband climbed a drainpipe or something, I don't think he'd be able to see his wife and Rod just... Y'know...
Also C, Rod screamed "Dottie", not "Florence".

This episode seems like when the cup finally overflows...in other words Clay usually keeps to himself or drinks away his problems, but something happened that alcohol couldn't fix and when the cup is spilled the entire cup comes out...meaning every problem he had hidden finally came out in 1 go....that could also explain his ass hole ness...he doesn't give a shit anymore letting him become cold and hard as much as he wants
But I don't blame puddy for what he did...because I was in his shoes once and as a man it is hard for me to tell a woman I have no feeling for "No because I find her ugly" doesn't mean i hate her just there 0 chance of any feelings to grow if you find something ugly especially nice and good people like her...
