Excellent video, still useful in 2024. Wasn’t expecting to find a video about the exact part I needed to replace and by the company that has the part no less. My 2003 ford focus will be healthy once more
For those not in the know. That is the Zetec motor. 00-04 had at least 4 motors. SPI(trash avoid) Zetec(change oil and timing belts lasts forever) SVT(basically a super Zetec that had 40 more HP but is less reliable if abused) Also 03-04 had a 2.3 duratec option. The duratec is what continued in all non turbo focus 05-end. They are generally solid and bulletproof motors. the 5spd manual has been the same since the begining. A 03 duratec 5sp will mount up to a 2019 or visa versa. The manual was also bulletproof. 05-07 are the best automatics. I don't recommend the Merc LV for those not originally spec for it no matter what they say. 12-19 the DPS6 is a great transmission when it works. Beware every major market has huge class actions.
You guys are the best trainers out there. I go to you first for all repair stuff. However there are others that would rather just replace the Thermostat only. We need you to show also how to disassemble the housing replace the the thermostat and reassemble the housing. Have a great one.
You guys are the only ones I trust to help me with tips and easier ways to do my cars I pretty much know a lot from hands on training but you guys help me if I get puzzled or looking for easier ways good work guys
Thank you so much for this how-to video! I was able to fix my car and get it back on the road - I'm a delivery driver and need this car for work. Your instructions were very easy to follow, and this video has excellent camera work to see what is going on in those small spaces. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ive had to do this more times than I want to remember LOL... that original Motorcraft thermostat housing is similiar but Not identical in its design to the aftermarket one... while the mounts and ports are the same, the construction is quite different and it made of a Much more durable and solid material with fewer seams than the aftermarket one.. how do I know? I ve had both in my hands ...the OEM one looks like it has been on there from the stone ages! the seam around the oring usually cracks and breaks apart on aftermarket ones...you can see its still intacct on the OEM one... an oring replacement likely would have fixed any leaks...anyway, point being that if ur gonna replace one of these, there IS a difference in the build quility of the genuine motorcraft part vs aftermarket... choose accordingly.
This is a common fault on this vehicle. I've had my 2002 for 16 years now and I'm on at LEAST my 6th housing, they just crack constantly. If you can convert to the aluminum one from the ford contour, do so.
I have 2000 focus ZTS. I'm going to check it on that housing for the contour thanks. these auto manufacturers have got to stop using plastic for these kinds of parts it's stupid.
Great video, really impressed. Only thing I noticed was you put the tape on the bolts the wrong direction. Which shouldn't be a problem since it didn't have any in the first place.
Sir good day for you and thank you for this video,i notice that the housing you just installed under the lower hose fitting have and very small fitting but i didn't see you removing nothing from there when you removed the old one and neither when you installed the new one, there are any small hose like 1/4 that need to be attached there?
If I don't have the vacuum system, should I just add coolant to the reservoir as it bleeds air until it reaches the full line? Or is there something else that I should do instead?
I have a Ford Focus 2005. The fan doesn't operate causing over heating. When the fan was tested directly, it rotated. What is causing fhe fan not operate automatically? Someone told me it could be thermostat. Do you have a thermostat for sell?
There is a resistor in the fan shroud between the fans, the plug-in connector overheats and burns the connections and the fans won't run on the normal low speed. When this would happen with mine, I would turn on the ac and this would run the fans on high speed and resolve the over heating. You will need a new resistor and the plug assembly. Some parts stores call it a fan relay, I think O'reillys and Advance call it that. Good luck.
I have a uk mk1 ford focus. I,need to change the thermostat but have the option on euro car part for a 74 degree or 82 degree. What one should i go for please.
I changed my thermostat, but it's still overheating. Any idea why? It has fresh coolant and fan works and only overheats when I'm idel but cools down when I'm driving. Thx.
I have 2003 ford focus svt the problem on mine is leaking at thermostat housing but when order thermostat housing assembly doesn't come with coolant temperature senson and no plug underneat the housing. My question where do i put the coolant temperature sensor if the new housing doesn't have the hole for the sensor. I hope someone can help me thanks.
I recently picked up a 03 svt daily beater... it has a this leak, i just ordered this part here, should have everything you need www.am-autoparts.com/Ford/Focus/thermostat-housing/AM-3468702940/755813.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsqrh89iP5wIVUfDACh2r5Q5JEAQYAyABEgJR5vD_BwE
Yeah, I was wondering about that. I have a 2002 Focus Wagon. Not only does it 'yes' have a drain plug - but, much to my surprise that damn thing was super easy to turn (a large Phillips or flat head). I thought it might be all corroded in place. *TIP:* The drain plug is pinned to the radiator - which means that you can unscrew it until the coolant starts to drain, but no matter how much further you unscrew it after that, the plug won't come loose from the radiator and drop into your bucket. The way that it is designed, you do *not* have to over-tighten it in order to seal it back closed.
+Tonia Paulsen Thanks for checking us out! Yes, it would be recommended to have a torque wrench to ensure everything is tightened enough but not too much to avoid any possible issues from normal driving conditions/bumps
A cheap click-type torque wrench will do 90% of what you need done. $25 at Harbor Freight for the 1/2" drive one that goes to 150 ft-lbs. Anything more than that is pretty much only needed for axle nuts, and even a lot of small shops don't bother there: they just rattle them on with an impact by feel.
@@1AAuto, I’m sorry. Please know that I wasn’t being a know it all or critical of your work. I really appreciate all your helpful videos. In fact, I’ve watched so many videos of your repairs on the same Ford Focus that I want to buy that car. It’s practically factory new since you’ve all finished with it. But back to the thermostat. Is it perfectly acceptable to leave the housing on, just remove the front cover and replace the inner thermostat? Or is there a specific reason to replace the whole housing?
You are using the incorrect coolant !!!!!! It’s suppose to be Fords Motorcraft gold coolant ( G-05 ) !!!!!! This is incorrect and will cause problems .... Ford switched from the silicate based Green coolant to the Phosphate free HOAT coolant in 2000 and you will see on the degas chamber the sticker that says use only G-05 gold !!!!!

I like how you guys used to list all the tools needed at the beginning of the video, super helpful
I removed the coil & coil bracket. It made for easier access to the hoses etc. while working in that confined area.
Your videos are better than the others. Nice job.

You say prerogative a lot. But, you know, that's your prerogative, man.
Got a good chuckle from this haha

Doing one of these now and you were lucky mine still has the squeeze clamps on all the hoses. Much harder to remove.
Great video, really impressed. Only thing I noticed was you put the tape on the bolts the wrong direction. Which shouldn't be a problem since it didn't have any in the first place.
Whats the torque spec on those 3 bolts if you have to change the thermostat?

Awesome.. thanks for making so easy! Really appreciate that
Replacing a thermostat shouldn't be this difficult! Obviously Ford gave no thought to ease of maintenance in designing this car.
Is it safe to drain and refill the coolant system without vacuuming
you put the Teflon tape on backwards on those bolts....
Can you change the thermostat and housing without draining it?
No. You may not have to drain the whole system down to completely empty, but you will have to drain it below the level of the thermostat housing.
thank you!

I got a new part but there is holes in it. The old one has plugs . I don't know what it's called . I can see the thermostat
No need to remove the bottom hose all fords have a drain plug on the radiator

I think it's because he doesn't want to remove all the fluid just some.
As a job on the side how much would you charge for it ?
How do you know which way the thermostat is supposed to be placed in the housing
He said the thermostat came installed in the housing, so i guess you just buy the housing.
@@garyb8186 no you can just buy the thermostat by itself.
One of my hoses are missing off of the thermostat. It’s smells like coolant which hose is that?
Gracias mi amigo
we , we're all thruout the video. its like were all there with him. seems it should be I instead of we or we're
Very good video and extremely helpful. Good filming! God bless you. Jesus Loves you. He is the Way.

So, why wouldn’t you just remove the front of the housing and replace only the internal thermostat instead of the complete housing?
+John Yingling We appreciate the feedback. Sometimes there are multiple ways to accomplish the same repair.

Please don't encourage people to take a sanding block to something like that
I do it's not the same and is made in China , many Ford parts are made in Spain.
