“It was Doris who gave me my first review. I remember her coming home from work. I was on the top of the stairs, playing, “Malaguena.” She went through to the kitchen, did something with pots and pans. She began to hum along with me. Suddenly she came to the foot of the stairs. “Is that you? I thought it was the radio. Two bars of “Malguena” and you’re in.” From 'Life' by Keith Richards
I love this passage so deeply. The beauty of the phrase "did something with pots and pans." I will go to this section of the audiobook and listen to it like a song. Nice to know it's being likewise appreciated
The man is amazing. The feel is pure soul. That is music. That is a guitar player. Flying up and down the neck like Vai or Malmsteen isn't music. There is no feeling. No soul. Thank you Keith. Your the true guitar God.
I can relate to this. For me, if I'm holding a guitar, even in a room of noise and chaos, I'm just going to start playing it. It's like breathing, you don't mean to create a moment, and you may fully know that you are. It just comes as naturally as breathing. "I'm just gonna sit here and play this, with a smile on my face. You all do whatever it is you're gonna to do."
This clip is taken from Martin Scorsese's 2008 Rolling Stones documentary "Shine a Light." The tune that Keith Richards is playing here is his own composition entitled "Only Found Out Yesterday." (per end credits) Some mistakenly believe this tune to be a Richards version of either "Spanish Ladies" or "La Malaguena." Even a passing familiarity with "Spanish Ladies" and "La Malaguena" demonstrates clearly that the song that Richards is playing here is very different from either of these tunes.
This video is amazing for two reasons. One, this is the first song that Keith learned to play-introduced to it by his Grandfather as a way to learn the guitar. Second, Bill Clinton is talking to Mick and others in background while Keith is playing this beautiful tune.
This is his brilliance to take a Spanish song and apply Chuck Berry single note riffs. Like open G ; making it chords and riffs and not slide, mixing it up. One of the best rock acoustic players ever.
This tune is neither "La Malaguena" nor "Spanish Ladies." This song is "Only Found Out Yesterday," written by Keith Richards. Richards has performed it in two films - first in 2007's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" and again in 2008 in the Martin Scorsese documentary "Shine a Light." (per end credits for both movies) The above clip is from "Shine a Light."
Moving. This tune was mentioned often in his book. All guitarists have a piece they learn when first starting out that carries through their life with them, this is his. You can be anywhere in the world and you pick up the guitar and take yourself back over the years and lose yourself in the tune, the mood, the memories, the years gone by, the years to come. The teenage boy from Dartford sits in the Beacon Theatre and those around him don't even notice it. I doubt that Keith plays this the sam
Read Keiths Autobiography........all this Malaguena business is talked about and its a great read. In fact Malaguena is mentioned dozens of times throughout. Probably my favorite book I've read this year.
So I'm a muppet and a dumbass for having a different taste in music from you? Those guys are all technically great players, especially Dobson, but no one plays with as much heart and soul and Keith, and to me, that's much more important than being able to play a thousand notes a second.
And that's your opinion. You obviously prefer technically sophisticated guitar players, but I don't. I know exactly who Andres Segovia is, but there's nothing you can do to change the fact that I prefer Keith to him. That might sound ridiculous to you, but you're gonna have to accept that other people will have different tastes in music from you. Personally, I like musicians who use silence to their advantage. I don't like players who show off, because to me that's not what music is about... But that's just my opinion. And speaking of opinions, I'm letting you have yours, so fuck off and let me have mine.
@noclass33 it's the last line of the book. He plays it for his mother as she is dieing and recalls how she thought it was coming from the radio when he played it as a teenager.
All we need is Quint on the mike..."Farewell and adieu to you, Spanish Ladies, Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Spain..." Quint and Keef would have made the best band ever!
Thanks for your utmost love and support has brought me this far, it has been a hard time for me going through this, but your love and support keeps me going and standing strong in this difficult times. i do read your heartwarming comments and i truly appreciate all. It's the season of love for me & so i decided to put smiles on the faces of my fans by going through old posts on my official page and hitting up random fans, So i can get to relate with my fans better through discussions of depth and humour, listening to compliments and criticisms on my career walk.♥️
@1Palladia I was only joking. Unfortunatelly I'm not really good at classic latin tunes. i've always loved this bit on the DVD, especially how he ignores Clinton's visit -as opposed to Mick's excitement! - and when I finished LIFE I mistakenly connected this to La Malaguena, like if this could be the only latin tune Keith would punch in. Obviously not, I remember him saying how much he had learnt from practicing chord sequences in portuguese guitar music...
THANK YOU KEITH.....MALAGENA ....MOTHER....DEATH! LOVE KEITH! KEITH TOCOU ESSA MUSICA QUANDO SUA MAE ESTAVA ENFERMA...QUASE MORRENDO...NO LEITO PEDIU A ELE QUE TOCASSE....DEPOIS DE ALGUNS ACORDES...DISSE: -MEU FILHO...COMO VOCE ESTA DESAFINADO....MORREU TEMPOS DEPOIS....
by the way, I've been searchin around the internet to find tabs for this song, and it turns out its neither spanisch ladies or malaguena, but a song written by mr richards himself, called "I only found out yesterday"...
@noclass33 I too listened to the book on CD - don't be disappointed when the narrator changes - Johnny Depp does return, and then ultimately Keith himself finishes the read. When you get to the end of the book, you'll understand my comment. :-)
but i found out, that there's one instrumental song, which was recorded on one of the first rod stewart's or the faces albums (i cannot remember which one) :(
The problem with saying it's not Malaguena is that you then have to specify which Malaguena. In America we're most familiar with the sixth movement of the Suite Andalucia by Ernesto Lecuona. In Mexico it refers to a different song called Malagueña Salerosa. Generically, it's a flamenco style originating from the fandangos of Malaga, Spain. This piece could be in that style. The title was also used by Ravel, Shostakovich and Isaac Albéniz. Confused yet?
@JessicaM96 thats cool mate!!! any chance u could send me some tabs for it ive got most of learnt by listening but im still missin alot of it if u could send me tabs i would be very greatful :D
Question for Stones fans. Is there any video anywhere of Keith playing the actual Malaguena? If so I'd love to see it. He talks about it a lot in his book that it is one of his favorite songs to play and this is obviously not it.
Big Wipeouts the closer thing i've found is an interview where he plays the intro but not the entire song. It's a shame. I think it would be really interesting.
Sorry man I just posted that this chick played the best version I've heard here on you tube but I was wrong. Yours is nicer, better. A higher level of feeling. Fantastic!
Thanks for your utmost love and support has brought me this far, it has been a hard time for me going through this, but your love and support keeps me going and standing strong in this difficult times. i do read your heartwarming comments and i truly appreciate all. if this is spanish ladies can someone point me in the direction of the version that you think it sounds anything like, cos i cant hear it. if it is,it should be known as keiths interpretation of spanish ladies and not just "spanish ladies",yeah?...............
Thank you Keith for all the decades of your music. This piece is so moving.
“It was Doris who gave me my first review. I remember her coming home from work. From 'Life' by Keith Richards
Thx for posting that. I read it too but didn't know the song. I listened to several players doing it here on UA-cam but K's is magnificent.
And on her deathbed, told his sister "he was a little off key" when he played for her earlier. 🤣
I love this passage so deeply. The beauty of the phrase "did something with pots and pans." I will go to this section of the audiobook and listen to it like a song. Nice to know it's being likewise appreciated
Don't worry what this beautiful tune is just enjoy keith putting his heart and soul into it
The man is amazing. The feel is pure soul. That is music. That is a guitar player. Flying up and down the neck like Vai or Malmsteen isn't music. There is no feeling. No soul. Thank you Keith. Your the true guitar God.
Keith your music 🎶 🎵 is so moving 🎉🎉and I'm so blessed to have grown up listening 🎶 to you and your amazing talent and songwriting 🎉🎉
I can relate to this. For me, if I'm holding a guitar, even in a room of noise and chaos, I'm just going to start playing it. Keith the riff master plays,RESPECT!!!
In my opinion, this is the greatest tune he's ever played.
playing your own tuning and unconventional 'simplistic' style arguably most influential and recognizable guitarist on the planet....
This clip is taken from Martin Scorsese's 2008 Rolling Stones documentary "Shine a Light." The tune that Keith Richards is playing here is his own composition entitled "Only Found Out Yesterday." Oh goodness, so focussed , getting exactly what he wanted from life !!
"two bars of 'Malaguena' and you're in."
Almost cried.
He used to play this for his Mother as a child.
He played it on her death bed
This video is amazing for two reasons. One, this is the first song that Keith learned to play-introduced to it by his Grandfather as a way to learn the guitar. Second, Bill Clinton is talking to Mick and others in background while Keith is playing this beautiful tune.
❤❤❤immense Keef
quietly in a corner, with himself, the old pirate pours out his soul,
while everyone is busy with themselves
Wonderful!!!🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶⭐️⭐️🎶🎶🎶🎶⭐️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I've learned this by ear! It's amazingly beautiful -3 (;
This song is Only found out yesterday ! Hear it in final movie Shine a Light
This is his brilliance to take a Spanish song and apply Chuck Berry single note riffs. Like open G ; making it chords and riffs and not slide, mixing it up. One of the best rock acoustic players ever.
The riff master can play.
This is an excerpt from the extras on the Shine a light DVD. I thought that not many people get to see this anyway
This tune is neither "La Malaguena" nor "Spanish Ladies." This song is "Only Found Out Yesterday," written by Keith Richards. Read Keiths Autobiography........all this Malaguena business is talked about and its a great read. In fact Malaguena is mentioned dozens of times throughout. Probably my favorite book I've read this year.
you can find this in the bonus/extra dvd shine a light...it is longer and has much better sound.
Keith.....we are not worthy.
I've been waiting for this clip for a while
A hidden gem!
this was the first song he ever learned to play
Best guitar player in the world.
So I'm a muppet and a dumbass for having a different taste in music from you? Those guys are all technically great players, especially Dobson, but no one plays with as much heart and soul and Keith, and to me, that's much more important than being able to play a thousand notes a second.

Tom Laveign You should watch Glen Campbell or Roy Clark playing Malaguena.
+English Hooligan is an R-Tard.
English Hooligan Some people just don't know when to stop. You, sir, are one of those people. Quit embarrassing yourself.
Read Keith's book "Life" and you'll learn how much this song means to him
@noclass33 it's the last line of the book. He plays it for his mother as she is dieing and recalls how she thought it was coming from the radio when he played it as a teenager.
how can those pepole in the backround just stand there and talking while his playing
well, they maybe waiting for the show to begin but they don't know what they are missing out!
I’m a Rolling Stone fanatic! For life!
stol2 - I think one of them was Bill Clinton, so far too full of himself and people looking at him
All we need is Quint on the mike..."Farewell and adieu to you, Spanish Ladies,
Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Spain..." Quint and Keef would have made the best band ever!
C'est beau Keith......😘

@exilemainzone i agree,no-one has come up with any version of either of them songs that sounds anything like ONLY FOUND OUT YESTERDAY
@1Palladia

But this is not a malagueña, but Spanish Ladies! Great version!

Hey does anyone know what kind of guitar he's using here? It's a beautiful piece.
Martin 00-21

@1Palladia
I don't thinkl so....You know what? Maybe Keith still believes THIS was la malaguena....:D
That was lovely, Keith, but you should really hear Roy Clark's "Malaguena".
@1Palladia
The first useful comment on this long thread. Do you think I should change the title? Or does it matter at all?
