  • democracynow.org - Just weeks after the United Nations warned that humanity has only a dozen years to mitigate global warming and limit the scope of global catastrophe, we speak with world-renowned political dissident, linguist and author Noam Chomsky. He says, “We have to make decisions now which will literally determine whether organized human life can survive in any decent form.”

      except, i study climate. im smarter than you. you know why? Rick Bishop, my concern is that 'climate change' has become an excuse, a distraction from the other horrors perpetrated on our planet today. Dig more deeply to find out how vast is the atmosphere of our planet, the history of high levels of CO2 during the time of the dinosaurs. Without C02 there would be no life on this or any planet.
      Is CO2 a distraction from fracking and other horrors? Fracking destroys vast areas of land; possibly irreversible damage. When do we hear this being discussed? I rarely see such mentioned.

    We don't know the optimal best temperature for the earth. A 2 degree drop could plunge us into a new glacial age where most of the northern hemisphere would be under 3 km thick ice. We also don't know the optimal level of CO2, however we do know that when CO2 levels are tripled in greenhouses plant growth increases dramatically. We also know that if CO2 levels are too low plants die. CO2 levels are historically low.
    There are plans to remove CO2 from the atmosphere which may mean the end of plant life on the earth. Will governments then sell the CO2 to farmers?
    Many species have disappeared, not because of CO2 or climate change, but because of loss of habitat, environmental degradation and other factors.
    I am fed up with alarmists who told us in the 1980s to prepare for a new ice age, who told us in the 1990s that we would be extinct in 10 years because of global warming, and who are now telling us that climate change has to be stopped.
    Climate has been changing without any help from us for millennium and I think paying for that change is a scam.

    • @davidprimeau3368
      @davidprimeau3368 5 років тому

      My brother is an environmentalist and so is my son in law and they both don't believe the alarmist version. I only have a B.SC. with majors in physics, mathematics and geophysics, with a minor in geology, and a B.Ed. so I am not quite qualified to comment on the issue.
      I know some species will have trouble adapting but the monarch butterfly will do just fine since it flies from Canada to Mexico in a matter of weeks so I am sure the butterfly will be ok. I have no idea what species you are talking about since we now plant trees which is a great way to renew a fantastic renewable resource, I grow plants indoors in Canada that are native to tropical areas , there are zebra mussels native to Russia in Canada, and asian carp in central USA. Those mussels and carp have adapted quite well thank you. We can now grow plants from virtually everywhere in the world. Animals have been successfully reintroduced to areas where they have been overfished or overhunted. There is still work to be done in this area and we have much to learn, however climate change has nothing to do with the decline of blue whales and numerous other species. Blue whales are coming back, slowly, however we continue to destroy their habitat, not global warming. Other whales have not done as well, but again not because of global warming cooling change.
      I can walk away from an ocean rising because of global warming but I can't run from an atmosphere I can't breath because of environmental degradation.
      I do respect Noam Chomsky's opinions and have been listening to him since the 1960s, however in this case I think he is exaggerating.
      You say it will be ghastly. Will it be worse than all the villages under 300 feet of water off the coast of India? Mankind moved on. The record of ocean rise is quite interesting and has been slow for the past few thousand years but has been much greater in the past, especially right after the last glacial melt.
      The Holocene, our current geological epoch, is not the best in the earth's history in terms of diversity of species and biomass, so to say it is the best is not true. Maybe living things would be better off with a higher CO2 level, they were in the past.
      Telling me my comment was stupid and telling me you are fed the F**k up with me did not change my mind, however I do listen to fact and reason.
      I still believe our largest environmental threat is not CO2 or climate change but environmental degredation. I include over fishing of the oceans, destruction of habitat, monoculture, and other things like this since they are destruction of the environment. CO2 is a joke and a scam.

    • @davidprimeau3368
      @davidprimeau3368 5 років тому

      @Bestoink Dooley
      I do know about monarch butterflies and CO2 is not what is killing them. I did a quick search and climate change rates number 9 on the threats to monarch butterflies. You should read what I said because environmental degradation/habitat loss was high on the list. I was surprised ozone loss was so high on the list. We still may be headed towards high sunburn action which is also devastating.
      You list many numbers and then say that is a disaster, however there is no proof that higher CO2 will kill us.
      I did hear CO2 levels went as low as 180ppm and many scientists said there was a real crisis of all plants dying on the earth. From what I heard if it had gone to 150ppm, about 20% lower, we would not be here. Maybe Amy should do a program about that. CO2 is to plants as O2 is to us and I can't imagine what would happen if governments started to get huge amounts of money and started geoengineering and massive removal of CO2 from the atmosphere.
      Money would be better spent developing geoengineering on mars, but do you believe in a flat earth? Just kidding.
      You seems knowledgeable, we just don't see the same urgency.

      @davidprimeau3368 5 років тому

      @Bestoink Dooley
      Thanks for the articles and I read the first one which supports many of my claims that environmental degradation is a larger problem than climate change.
      The writer says many extinctions were due to climate change but the ones I know of are due to cooling or asteroid strikes. I don't know of any warming periods that caused mass extinctions. I could research it but I am not going to since I want to visit my daughter who gets little time off from her pursuit of a masters in mathematics.
      The author goes on to talk about the threats we face, transforming environments, loss of trees, species invasions, over fishing, loss of habitat, increase of nitrogen... and then says climate change will make these worse, which I discount as the lesser threat of the two. He then goes on to say 60% of ecosystems are degraded, which is my point.
      As stated by the author, "Also, although climate change is a concern for conservation biologists, it is not the focus for most researchers (at present), largely I think because of the severity and immediacy of the damage caused by other threats."
      Yesterday on CBC Canada a man was talking about Bolsonaro, climate change, the new president of Brazil, climate change, cutting down the Amazon rain forest, climate change, loss of animals, climate change, loss of habitat, climate change... and all I could think of is if climate change, which may be good, or not, was left out of the discussion then what is happening is terrible and these are things we can deal with. He was so stuck on climate change he did not even mention nitrogen from the proposed farms going into the oceans, causing algae blooms and destroying another ecosystem. He seemed more concerned about burning trees to clear the land and putting more CO2 in the air than the loss of 2 more habitats and ecosystems.
      Again, thanks for the articles, however I still think environmental degradation is a much bigger problem than CO2 in the atmosphere and climate change.

      4C, and we are done? wow
      4C colder and we are in an ice age, which has accured. The earth has been 10C higher with more diversity of species.
      Yeah, environmental degradation is a worse problem.

      Haven't talked for a week but I like to have the last word. I like to talk to people that talk facts.
      I researched species extinct from climate change and I found nothing, but they did say that climate change would be much worse. Finally, yesterday, something I have known for 10 years, CBC Canada admitted that polar bears were more numerous than 20 years ago. They also admitted that scientists did not want to disclose that fact, but it was in one episode of one news cycle. Once in 12 hours. Media is biased.
      My argument was loss of habitat, pollution, over fishing, over hunting and many other things are perils to us, however you say climate change is apocalyptic. I still disagree. I can name many species that humans have extinguished , however I can't name a single one that has been ended by climate change, not in recent history.
      I can't predict the future, climate change people say they can, but I disagree.

    I grew up to think that most humans are decent people. Seeing fairness as a basic mathematical equation of balance. But after a number of experiences with those in power, courts, lawyers, I have revised that thinking. Many people can be so absolutely self serving to the point of being evil.

    Is the black hole in space called ignorance (greed) going to suck the joy out of life and destroy the planet?
    Or can the light and warmth of humanity (lovers) fill the black hole in space so that it's darkness (ugliness) goes away and it's heavy gravitational pull stops sucking the joy out of life.
    This battle is beyond physical. It is metaphysical.
    It is darkness, ignorance and greed against light, truth and love.

    The IPCC are a bunch of doddering old fools and are severely underestimating the problem. When is Amy going to have Professor Guy McPherson on to tell it like it really is.
    It is far too late to do anything about abrupt climate change leading to near term human extinction and I’m severely disappointed with Chomsky whom I once admired for losing touch with what’s really going on.

    How do you rank Climate Change as being the #1 issue to be concerned about? Do Palestinians care about global warming, they can't even leave Gaza. In America, their citizens are fleeced by in international elites who own the Federal Reserve. What is to be done about global warming other than show videos of emission pollutions?

    • @EclecticSceptic
      @EclecticSceptic 5 років тому

      Why do you pit climate change against other issues? That is a false competition. It is not the fault of climate change campaigners that Israel oppresses Palestine or that capitalists are plundering our societies. Indeed these issues are all linked (there is much overlap in their causes and solutions).
      As for why climate change is at the highest tier or priority. Because it affects the entire planet. Because 1/3 of land will become uninhabitable by desertification, heat, and flooding. Hundreds of millions will flee their homes due to climate change. The world food system will be majorly disrupted. Water supplies will dry up. Etc. This is not scaremongering, it is mainstream science and it's already beginning to happen.
      The physical environment is the most basic substrate on which human society depends. Without it, there is nothing. It is not some airy fairy thing about 'loving the environment' or doing recycling rituals.

    Mr. Chomsky You had a chance, maybe even a duty, to endorse Bernie in 2016 and to help people find their way past their fear of being bold and their tendencies to play it safe. You chose, instead, to say, with supreme confidence in your opinion, that even though Bernie was the best candidate it was set in stone HRC was going to win.🤦🏼‍♀️ You are personally responsible for untold numbers of nervous voters falling with relief behind corporate Democrats' rallying cry: "Don't expect too much!!" What if you had used your influence for good, instead of cowardice? What if we were working with a president who named climate change as humanity's #1 threat? We'll never know, now, but I certainly think our odds of survival might be out of the single digits at least.
    You aren't alone as far as blame goes; Robert Reich, Elizabeth Warren, even our late night jesters and bards, those same comedians who have kept us sane the last two-ish years- a lack of vision from some of our most-heard voices and influential minds, led to Bernie and Progressives being dismissed as unicorn- and fairy-hunters, and now we have a white nationalist in the People's House.
