I'm always trying to break 100. I appreciate your focus on lag putting and avoiding possible penalty situations on the tee. Payne Stewart always said "the first thing I think about on the tee is where I want the ball to go. The second thing is where I DON'T want it to go."
I really like your teaching style. I'm 63 now. 35 years ago I shot 76 at one of the local courses. 25 years ago an old football injury on my right knee started getting to me, my scores declined. 18 months ago I had a total knee replacement. Now I'm on a quest to reclaim shooting in the 70's. I may not get there, but your enthusiasm will help me try. Thanks!

Good tips MSH-thank you! I think of my game and course while watching and I know you have helped me with course management. That is an area I have needed help with…looking forward to this season.
I love your content and presentation. 2025 I’m going to have to putt better. But I’m also at that age (68) where I’m struggling to admit that I’ve lost some club head speed and distance. I’ve never been a big hitter but now carry my driver 250, and my 7 iron avg around 140. Looking forward to more videos from you.
Thanks so much, as I am trying to get to the point of regularly breaking 85. I play on a challenging course, slope 127. I have broken 85 several times, but it is not expected. Once, I was frustrated with my bad shots, especially off the tee, so I went to play with only a 6 iron, pitching wedge and putter, and scored 84. One huge difference I notice between my game and yours is that I have too much side to side dispersion in my mid irons, which is killing my GIR. I have to admit that my practice on the driving range is not helping me too much, probably because they are not well designed practice sessions.
I played 2-3 rounds of golf a year until last year, where I played about 30. I was able to get my handicap to 14. Looking to decrease my handicap for 2025 and play more golf. Videos like yours are important because they remind me of the main points to playing good golf. Thanks and have a great 2025!
Thank you for great tips. You make a great point about using the driver unless there is a penalty area in play, so to speak. I have noticed two things about your swing that I have noticed with good golfers, you have a trigger mechanism to start your swing, and you have a really good balanced finish. Thanks again for your videos....
Great video! I'm just starting to get back into golf and will be trying to apply a lot of what you have said here to my rounds. Let's see if I can break 95!!!
It’s a new year. Low 80’s is my new goal, 12.3 GHIN I agree with your approach… I just need to do it 😊. I still get those “what the heck happened” once and a while. Great video
This is a terrific video. Educational with plenty of lessons and it doesn't hurt that the player is pretty darn good.... Must better than the videos that promotes golf equipments....
Great advice. In addition your punch shot video can reduce those "blow up" holes. On most of the courses here the woods (completely untouched) are the course's defense. Thanks MSH. "Hit'em straight"

More excellent course management advice. I know my achilles heel is lag putting. With the advice I have received from your videos, breaking 80 is a realistic goal for 2025. Thanks again Wes
Lots of great course management thoughts here!!!!! A few videos back, you were saying how far you hit your clubs. The Driver was 212 yards (or something like that). I commented about being surprised that was as far as you hit the driver. I thought it should have been further, somewhere in the 235 to 250 range. I think I misunderstood the distances. Those must have been CARRY distances, because you hit the driver much further here. Again, great video!!!!!
Ironically I just had a conversation with a golf buddy that after chasing distance a year ago, I ran my average score up about 7-8 strokes. I had gotten down to breaking 85 consistently, then started shooting 90+ over & over trying to hit driver longer off the tee. The number one cause was due to penalties, mostly off the tee. But I got back to the basics a few months ago and I’m focused on conservative tee shots to avoid penalties, really practicing approach shots inside 175yds, refocusing on my best skill and that’s chipping around the green, and realizing that being good at lag putting is the best way to avoid 3 putts. Last round I played, shot 81 with no penalties, 2 chip ins, and had an abnormal round with 3 birdies; but I did have 1 double bogey.
MSH another great video and some of the best content on YT! I have 2 questions if you have time to answer, what are the typical tee boxes do you play? What’s the preferred total yards for you. How long have you been putting left hand low and did it make a difference? Thank you from cold and snowy Buffalo!
I typically play from around 6600 yards when playing an unfamiliar course. This is the video from October 2023 when I switched to left hand low. ua-cam.com/video/m_gDBk8NGhg/v-deo.html I feel like I putt better now. Thank you!
All I had to see was your iron shots and the divots you take to know you know what you are doing. Your low point was always a few inches past the ball. Even when you missed and acknowledged it was a bad shot, it was still decent. As well your lag putting is spot on. If you mind me asking, what clubs and woods do you use?
Can you please do a video on how to improve lag putting. It is extremely important and I’d like some coaching points around process and technique to improve. Great style!!
Real talk, I am consistently around 90 to 95. I’ve had a couple of rounds in the 88 89 range last season. I’m 57. Not long off the tee. Anything that you can share I’m willing to listen.
This is timely, as I broke 90 last summer for the first time maybe ever. Broke it a handful of times. Eliminating penalty strokes, and 3-putts, are definitely a huge part of it. Goal for this year is to shoot 85 or below. Best score last year was 87, on a fairly challenging course.
Also, work on your chipping. Learn to get up and down. Chip and a putt is just like a two putt from a green in regulation. That was my game when I played. Tee shot into the rough as often as hitting the fairway. Second shot close to the green as often as on the green. Chip and a Putt. (Assuming a par 4...)
Lag putting is the most underappreciated skill in golf yet one of the most important to learn. If you can lag putt well then breaking 90 becomes easy and breaking 85 a much easier proposition.
Tour average from 100 yds out is 17 feet. If we as amateur golfers are on the green anywhere we should be really happy. I played a lot of golf with a good friend who was an ace with his irons. I have seen him play many rounds in which he only missed a couple of greens which is the opposite of how I played, I only hit a couple per round. He was not a good putter and I was pretty good at scrambling for pars, so I was able to shoot a score not a lot worse than he did. How did he get so good with those irons? Every day after work he hit balls in his pasture for at least an hour.
I am a 54 year old disability pensioner who broke his neck twice and back once. C and L spine fused.. I'm a short hitter but can break 70 off the blues. On a public course its just about keeping the ball in play and having a great short game.. Most of us cant swing like pro's but we can chip, putt and pitch like one.. I have missed every green and shot par before so it proves the importance of short game over long is king. Whatever length you have work on straightening it up and keeping it in play. Get up and down at least 50% and you will break 85 easy as.
I'm going to try and shoot my age. (76) , Soon to be 77. I am listening hard to what you say and will keep it in my back pocket on the course... Hope I don't have too many meat left on the Bone shots.... Greens or Fairways.
lol I played 3 times in the last week .Just shy 5 months post rotator cuff surgery. Two hounds were horror shows. Front 9 of 3rd round similar. Back 9 I started trying to use principles you’ve talked about in the last year or so. Suddenly I played better. As they say the simplest explanation is usually THE best answer. Your videos prove that statement. Thanks MSH.
These tips help me shoot a lot better than 85. Regardless of ball striking better decisions can help golfers shoot better. You have to take the ball striking out of it (I only hit one good shot in this video). Thank you for watching!
@bittled I get it. I play with a guy who hits it 340 yards. I played in the state open with a guy who hit a drive over 400 yards. I'm the shortest hitter in every tournament I play. You can only play your game.
You say you are a short hitter but I am hitting 8i from 121 ..lol That is a short hitter. All the guys I play with laugh at me but I don't miss many greens..Hitting greens in regulation is how you break 80.
My name is Mistah Short Hitter but, I don't remember saying I was a short hitter. Do people seriously laugh at you about club selection? That seems pretty immature to me. Thank you for watching!
@mistahshorthitter To be honest,I was expecting you to hit a driver in the region of 190/200 yards which I would consider quite a good distance for a short hitter. When I saw the first hole was 360 yards and you had 120 to the green I have to say I was astonished. I could probably hit that far but only when everything was in my favour and aligned in sync. I suppose it come down to a subjective view as to what a short/long hitter is and from how far the person in question can hit the ball.
@07davymac I'm comparing myself to my competition. Im always by far the shortest in my tournaments. Often, in my mid am and state qualifiers, I'm out driven by 80-100 yards or more. It's also a fun name. Im making fun of myself and no one else. I hope you give the channel a chance. There is a lot of content on the way. In the summer I carry the driver about 210 yards, in the winter, about 190 yards. I appreciate you watching. Thank you!

To be honest,I was expecting you to hit a driver in the region of 190/200 yards which I would consider quite a good distance for a short hitter.
Thank you!
His handicaps probably a 3 or 4

You are not a short hitter compared to me and my friends. Your also much strainer.
