Song for a Yiddishe Momme - so old and so grey! A heartfelt and majestically powerful rendition sung so, so well by the great Tom Jones - just beautiful! Conjures up so many images, from Jewish mothers who somehow survived The Holocaust to "ordinary mums" - even when they were doing it hard they still found strength in their babies eyes and always showed true and unconditional love to their children. I think about my mum when I hear this song - she was taken far too early by MND - she was my "wee mammy" and I will never forget her!

This is a live recording in London's Talk of the Town in 1967. Tom had already recorded 3 smash hits (It's Not Unusual, What's New Pussycat & Green Grass of Home) by the time he made this live album. Hard to find an album where he sounded any better, this is indeed this legendary singer at his very best!
Another absolutely stupendous song also on the live Talk Of The Town album is I Believe - just first-class!

This is the concert I’ve been listening to on Apple Music but they don’t play it I never heard it so I came to UA-cam which has EVERYTHING thank goodness! God bless Tom, he kept the strength in his voice unlike some others of his era 🙏❤️

I was born in Glasgow, now live in Australia, and heard this song as a very young boy - my dad would sing it. Loved widely as a great song that honoured Jewish mothers, but also mothers in general.
All I know is that he was raised in Wales and Jones is a very Welsh name. I live in Ireland and I have lived in England too. My Dear Mother loved Tom Jones. That voice, the raw emotion he projects. Its beautiful.

What's it matter what his origins are? It's a beautiful song and he sings it beautifully and with deep feeling. Why couldn't his dad have taught him this song? I can remember that song being sung in pubs in the 1960s in my own home city--a Scottish industrial one--by a man who was a Scots Protestant. He probably taught his own kids it. It's a famous song and like all famous songs from almost all cultures we all identify with them. Check Perry Como singing the Kol Nidre, as an example.
