**The BEST Drainage Foundation for Any Fiddle Leaf Fig **
One of the keys to a healthy fiddle leaf fig is having great drainage. Fiddle leaf figs without great drainage may develop root rot, dropped leaves, and eventually die. It’s important to consider the soil and pot your fiddle leaf fig is in when it comes to drainage.
A well-aerated fast draining soil and a container with drainage holes is a must for a healthy fiddle leaf fig. For extra assurance, Houseplant Smart Gravel can be used as a ballast underneath the soil to lift the root system up to create great drainage for your plant.

Hi! I subscribed to your channel, 5 months ago I bought a ficus on sale is growing great and I changed the pot for one a little bigger. It's not losing leaves but they are not soft is that fine? I dont know if I put a lot of perlite in it. I want a big tree! I am learning with your videos. Thank you!

Hi Alicia, it sounds like your plant is very very happy! The leaves of a fiddle leaf fig will be thicker as the leaf grows and matures. To make your plant grow bigger, faster, is to give it as much bright, indirect light as possible. Make sure it is sitting directly in front and up against your brightest window. A grow light can even help to supplement if your home is not bright enough. Good luck!

Thank you for the tips! I heard you say to repot in the garden containers and set the plant in the decorative container so that you can always make sure it is draining properly. Stupid question: the drainage rocks that you recommend for the bottom-that would go in the actual garden pot and then add dirt directly on top of the rocks? And when you repot to do that does the FLF end up sitting higher? Or that would be too much of the drainage rocks on the bottom? Thank you!

Hi Suzan, you are correct. Our Houseplant Smart Gravel is used at the bottom of your pot where your root ball sits. Add a layer of smart gravel on the bottom then the soil and root ball and the smart gravel acts as a ballast to lift your plant up to aid in the drainage process. Happy Growing!

@@FiddleLeafFigPlant So that is one layer of the smart gravel. Ok sounds good thank you so much! I sent you and email with pictures since I may have over notched my FLF and wondering if/how/ where to cut and propagate it to save the beautiful top and then get new growth! I am learning so much from you. Thank you for the learning videos! I am crossing my fingers hoping ti win the FLF from your site! 😂🥰 What a fun thing to do!! Have a great 4th!!

Thanks for the video. Question, what if the top 1 or 2”s are of soil are dry but it’s still reading moist lower like 3” and below? You recommend to sill water?
    Thanks

I would put your finger or a moisture meter down into the soil. If the moisture meter reads 'wet' when it is halfway down into the soil, halfway between the trunk and inner edge of the pot, I would wait. When the moisture meter reads a 4 or below, that is a good time to water. Another thing to remember is look at your overall plant. Is it looking thirsty, droopy? If it does and the top few inches of soil are dry, then it is time to water.
